16. Stoicism

The other major Hellenistic philosophy during the period from Alexander to the dawn of the Christian era was Stoicism. Like the Epicureans, the Stoics were skeptical as to the major metaphysical issues that had occupied the minds of Plato and Aristotle. They rather focused on the practical concern of how to live a balanced and satisfying life. In this way they were like the Epicureans, who also were mostly interested in practical matters rather than the more transcendent issues of human existence.
Though they were asking the same questions, the Stoics gave quite different answers from those offered by the Epicureans. The Stoics believed that the world is governed by the 'fates,' and what the fates decree cannot be changed or influenced. The only personal control available in life, in the Stoic vision, involved the inner life of peace, calm, and reason, in the face of a deterministic external world. They were thus committed to the eight principles that make up the bulk of the lecture in this lesson.
Observers have from time to time noticed that the Stoic principles share some important features with the Christian ethic. Ideas of reason, logos, discipline, and moderation, all fit nicely with the Christian ethic. There are, however, important differences that separate a Stoic approach to life from that embraced by a Christian. It is important to keep track of both as we give our attention to the Stoic philosophy.

Epictetus is well worth a read; his works are clearly written, there's not a lot of them, and they largely contain some good advice.

This seemed to be a nicer picture of the stoics than I'm familiar with so it was kind of nice to hear I'm not an expert on the stoics but know some about them and they seem to me to be of the opinion that you can be happy if you just don't expect anything good in life. They seem to me to very much embrace the idea that "life is a bitch and then you die". So the ideas that Bruce presented here are a side of the stoics I haven't seen and was kind of refreshing. However, I noticed that he got quite political for a short time. I remember Thomas too, but not the way he does. I also noticed that he seems to be of the belief that everyone believes the way his denomination believes, which is not the case. But still yet I learn a lot from him.

"They seem to me to very much embrace the idea that "life is a bitch and then you die"." Not really. If one could distil the Stoic philosophy into a single line it would be "Crying about it isn't going to help".

Epicurus was not a hedonist. He believed pleasure was the most important thing in life BUT his definition of pleasure was freedom from pain. He was an ascetic. He wasn't a guy that ran amok satisfying his lusts.

If there exists a "natural law", then the law of which tradition is "natural" enough ? Is the code of Urr-nammu natural law? or code of hammurabi ? Or code of manu ? or Confucius's law ? Or that of bhuddha? Or that of sharia? Or the code of himba tribe? Or the code of imperial japan? Out of so many traditions, how can one among these be crowned as "natural" and others as "unnatural" ? Who knows the criteria and what is the criteria ?

🤦You haven't learned much, did you...All the rules of logic and objective reality IS natural law & was all created by God. The pagans you mentioned only use half truths since they lost most of the knowledge of Adam and the 1st prophets. And sometimes they get things right by simply using their GOD GIVEN minds to think, being created in God's image

You are correct. Clarence Thomas believes and follows the natural law that all husbands must quietly follow the instructions of his wife. Clarence Thomas also acts out the natural law that man follows the lust of his eyes.

@@BGAKHHYou people have no knowledge of Scripture & the Hebrew text. You twist it because of your lack of understanding of what the poet is talking about. Let me educate you: The poet Assaf asks the imaginary idols: "How long will you judge injustice and bear the face of the wicked?" (2), he calls them to do justice to the poor and orphans, and to save them from the hands of the wicked: "Judge the poor and the orphan, the poor and the righteous" (3), "Remove the poor and destitute from the hands of the wicked" (4). The poet moves on to speak of those "Gods": "They did not know and would not understand. They will walk in darkness and perish like all the institutions of the earth" (5), the poet says that until now he thought they were really "gods": "(But) I said you are gods and that you are all children of the Most High "(6), but now he knows that: "Indeed as a man you will die and as one of the ministers you will fall" (7).

Deist here. That divine spark is the only thing that is always perfect in us. It's what allows us to comprehend perfection & recognize God. It takes a god to recognize God....otherwise you have no sense of standard or potential, except that you have that standard & that potential in you. All children & creations have the potential to become like their creator.

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer "You are the same as your Source. You are God. Because you come from God, you cannot be anything but God." I have read some of his books. It seems logical to me. I've experienced miraculous transitions from hopelessness to hopefulness when I really prayed and ask him for it and asked him for direction. The first time it took about a half hour face down on the floor and really praying. All of a sudden a feeling of warmth came over my body from head to toe like nothing I'd ever felt before and then a feeling total peace of mind..Some I've spoken who have felt it call it being born again. I believe it's the same thing. Different people describe it different ways, which is not to say they're wrong. I'm always open to other's explanations. I do not claim to know only to have faith. If you believe in evolution you are wrong. If you believe all living animals including us evolved from a single cell, ask yourself one question. How is that we haven notseen any new creatures farther evolve since man has been able to communicate through writings?
@jesusislordrepentobeythego9607
I'm a Christian I know evolution is a joke. I do not agree that anything about us is any way divine. God is omnipotent and has the power to create that which is not divine, to suggest otherwise is mind bogglingly idiotic. Just because you prayed and felt something does not mean you are in any way God? Have you read KJV Bible?
@fyoung64
@fyoung64 6 лет назад
I'm only laying out other's beliefs and added my experience. I'm not saying I'm GOD! If you haven't experienced the ultimate cure (felt something) as you call it. Then you have no idea what I'm talking about. I guess to call me an "idiot" pretty much sums up your faith! Bless You! For you know not what you do!
@jesusislordrepentobeythego9607
I don't doubt your experience. Thank you and wish you the best

Christianity is very limiting as a worldview. Trying to cram everything into one dogmatic faith is narrow and unfulfilling.
