Holy crap! Look at that *incredible* sprite work for Bio Force Ape! Man, this would've been a revolutionary game for its time had it not been cancelled.
@Dorelaxen, what @JohnRiggs never knew about is that, although the main character in Secret Ties resembles Duke Togo from the Golgo 13 series, the thing is that the same man that made the Golgo 13 series did, in fact, make an anime and manga of Secret Ties and, yes, the characters from Secret Ties do, in fact, exist within the universe of Golgo 13, and, from what I heard once, they did indeed cross paths with Duke Togo and things went about as expected, which was comical. Anyway, as for how Secret Ties plays out, think of it like the Uncharted or Indiana Jones franchises, but long before the former franchise even existed and as a blend of those franchises, attitude wise. Still, Secret Ties would be an awesome 3D platformer/action/adventure game that would most likely be made by Bandai Namco today, you know, if they wanted to make a rivalry with Square Enix and Sony over the Tomb Raider and Uncharted series, anyway.
I 100 percent agree. It’s my favorite unreleased Nes games to play. The box art painting was found a few years ago. For it to have gotten that far in production and not release is a shame.
In the straight outta Compton movie, the group asks their new manager “hey you’re the guy who’s got those little raisins singing I heard it through the grapevine”
One of the most interesting things about the Gigaleak was the complete Hit the Ice for the NES coming out of nowhere. What an interesting take on a sports game.
It's possible that Nintendo of America found it too violent. Yes! There were tons of wrestling games, but karate was missing up until the SNES came along. Karate was likely too violent for Nintendo of America, it sounds silly, but that's the way NOA was back then.
Great video, thank you! Some cool ideas out there that didn't make it. I remember playing Way of the Exploding Fist on C-64 many years ago. There was a super loud Bruce Lee type scream that happened right after the game loaded, always made me jump since load times varied with those disks!
Exploding Fist!! Way of the Exploding Fist was a massive hit on the C64, ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC home computers in 80’s Britain. It’s amazing to see there was a NES version in development. I’d have loved to have played that back in the day.
When I think of 'must-play' unreleased NES games, I think of Jaleco's "Bashi Bazook: Morphoid Masher." Fun platformer. Had an interesting twist. The timer ticked upward instead of downward, indicating the bosses' health. The longer you took to reach the boss, the more health they had at the start of the fight. ...Another one I'm fond of was Tengen's "Airball." Plays like Solstice, only you were a bubble instead of a wizard.
James Rolfe even said it best too; "Had the game been released like this, then that whole argument about Blast Processing would've been thrown out the window."
? NES didn't have speed issues and had plenty of fast games. For their eras SNES is slow and NES wasn't. Not sure how the previous console being fast helps when it didn't matter at that point. Sega could process more period, SNES wasn't getting help from NES.
FYI hero quest is my favorite board game of all time. You actually just missed a hasbro Kickstarter for a reissue. It’s the best way to introduce your kids to RPG games. You can get the original on eBay for about $100. Well worth it.
I would've loved Secret Ties, especially since I like that sick wall climbing action demonstrated in it and the Golgo 13 series. I also would've loved Star Trek 5, Time Eon Man & Sunsoft's own license-loss Superman re-skin "Sun Man" but thank the good Lord we at least got their "Terminator re-skin" Journey to Silius.
I wonder how many missed opportunities for classics that are out there. I started game development on the first iPads that came out in 2010 for four years until the project was cancelled. The entire time I was ecstatic about making it. It was a full blown Metroidvania with controls that I still think are very innovative and fit the way the player controls. It's indescribable how much it hurt to have it cancelled. I put more than 8,000 hours into creating it - no joke. I was the only programmer, and there were some artists who made proxy graphics. It's nice to see that a lot of these unreleased games can actually be experienced now. I hope that some day I'll be able to revive the game I worked on.
I remember 2 screenshots of a Nightmare on Elm Street game on a poster that came with a game where you played as Freddy and it was kinda reversed where the kids were all the bosses and you had to find his bones. I’ve ready it was turned into the released game but also read it was cancelled but I’ve never seen more than 2 screenshots.
Bio Force Ape is a pretty cool game. I’m surprised it never got released along with a bunch of other games on this list. I’m glade I got to see all of these unreleased games for the NES. Cool video😎
New kids on the block was written about in Nintendo Power ...tentative release date too. I had the issue in a bundle from the library about . 16 years ago
They got as far as a promotional box but, from what I understand, no actually coding when into this. It was a game I was hoping to see pop up for years.
Bio Force Ape, looks very impressive inside at it's large scale of animation frame rates. ..... Also. I have Time The Eon Man ( Rom ) i thought that it existed officialy in cart. But it seems, it's another finished prototype that it never came to the light of public. Shame was a great game.
3 of my most rare and expensive SNES games are Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI and Final Fantasy V put out by a small retro gaming company called Timewalk Games. Did this company have any connection to Nintendo? When did these games come out? The 3 games I mentioned were released in Japan for the Super Famicom but not in the U.S. In the 1990's as far as I know. These games were originally English translated ROMs playable on an SNES emulator on a computer. This Timewalk game company put out these English translations on SNES reproduction carts with reproduction SNES labels in boxes that look like original SNES boxes. Do you have any of these Timewalk games or any others this company produced? I have a LOT of my gaming friends searching for these Timewalk games but can't find them for sale on eBay or any retro gaming store. I wonder how many games this company released and if they were only English translated RPGs that never came out originally for the system. ..,..
Great video! I didn't know TimeDiver was not officially released. Because I have played it back in the 90's, and yes it is a great game. However, what I've played was a bootleg chinese 60-pin famiclone cartridge. Where I'm from the 8-bit experience was defined by Famiclones instead of the NES :) So I guess this unreleased game has leaked out fairly early, and ended being distributed by unlicensed cartridge producers. I can't remember which year exactly I got this game, but it should've been no later than 94.
I really appreciate the attention to detail that in a format where most games have you going to the right, the roller derby game has you going left. This is accurate because that's actually the direction of play in the actual sport. 👍
As well as the C64, Way of the Exploding Fist came out on the ZX Spectrum. Was made by Melbourne House...it was a great game and I played it a lot back in the day.
man, that "Hero Quest" one is something I definitely could have gotten into, looks really good actually. Little more streamlined UI maybe and it could have shipped.
Awesome list John! Love seeing Sunman on here - I believe that with that one and Journey to Silius, they actually had the licenses to Superman and Terminator when they started production, but they took too long to make them and the licenses got sold to someone else before release. Sunsoft made fantastic games back then, but they took forever to get them out the door. 😄 Also, I've never heard of Time Driver Eon Man. Gonna have to check that one out! Thanks for the video!
Has anyone on these messages ever played Rainbow Silk road? I did last year for the first time and it was a great change to traditional new RPGs that I think was only released in Japan before. It was rom only for US.

Did you hear about the Hellraiser NES game? Supposedly hardly got any programming done before cancellation but was going to be the the most ambitious NES game of all time.
Disneys Gummi Bears by CAPCOM! Every time Disney and capcom had a baby back this in was AMAZING. It would have been the last iteration in the Disney afternoon video game series and I WISH it would have happened. :-(
I actually found and bought a new box and and instructional manual to Star Trek 5 NES. I still have it put away. I wish that game would have been released.
There are more unreleased games on the NES than some systems have released games haha. Great list John. I'm surprised Tangent didn't release some of the games you mentioned. It would be interesting to hear what stopped them.
I got one for you. I heard about this game about a year ago & I tried to go through your video list to see if you covered it before, I couldn't find a video covering it but maybe you did. The Legend of Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets.
I refuse to believe that the California Raisins Game didn't release. I specifically remember renting it from the pizza shop in my hometown, because I was a huge fans of the music in that show as a kid. I remember where on the wall it was. And I keep hearing people say it didn't exist.
there's a game that we were supposed to get in the USA but we never got it called Armadillo and it plays a lot like a Mario game, there was even a pirate version with Mario replacing the main character. I've even seen screenshots of what looks to be a prototype of the game translated, so it was supposed to come out it's really NES but got canceled
