there should be three lasers- violet (bluray) red (dvd) and IR (CD). Guessing there's two lasers + photodiode in one of the packages, and the other diode + photodiode in the second package. I remember when bluray came out, people were taking the lasers out to make violet laser pointers using replacement sled units. DVD units have two lasers (red - dvd, IR - CD). the head has two sets of coils, one to move it up and down to focus and one to move it side to side for fine tracking. The part at 9:07 or so is a very small LCD that can mask off parts of the beam. I am not sure why it was needed, though. the page about making laser pointers showed it being activated. you can't see it do anything though without polarizing filters.
