16 years after Eric Alexander and Vincent Herring's live recording of Blues Up and Down at Smoke (transcription - • 36 Choruses on the Blu... ), the pair teamed up together for an episode of "Live From Emmet's Place" and once again recorded Blues Up and Down.
Great playing from both of these modern masters.
"Blues Up and Down" (Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt)
Recorded on August 2, 2021
Emmet Cohen - Piano
Eric Alexander - Tenor Saxophone
Vincent Herring - Alto Saxophone
Russell Hall - Bass

This is great! Although I was kinda over the solo 3 minutes into it, this is great for study! And to get some good language under the fingers Edit: Vincent’s solo is so much better, simply because he said what was needed for the musical situation and got out. That’s a top top level musician there

like Bird said, after 2 choruses "you're just practicing". lol. But really, Eric's solo is a masterpiece and this transcription is phenomenal.

The tenor tone and the way it's recorded remind me so much of how Oliver Nelson's tenor sounds on Blues and the Abstract Truth.

The guys like Eric and there are a few make some of us want to go get 2 yards of sand in a pickup truck, come back home and roll over our Selmer's and Buecher's. If they don scare the shit out of you, you mustn't know much about practice, practice practice and then practice some more. I never enjoyed practice other than to learn a new tune. I have no trouble with Jazz standards especially ballads and I can swing and bounce. The up-tempo shit kills me.

A lot of Coltrane influence in these solos.

I love VH's tone and style. So repetitive though. 😢

Thanks for the good transcription to study. There is nothing new in these two solos. They repeat what we have already heard and reheard by those who created this style. But many of them are dead. The only positive thing is that it is played 'live' again with young and living people, but not more. It will certainly evoke vocations of future Jazz Musicians. You have here a 'patchwork' and a 'summary' of the Creators. But no 'own personality' in these two musicians,, That said, it's also a choice, if they are aware of it so much the better, if not, it's a bit sad thinking that they bring something new. And in this 'style' there are hundreds of musicians who play just as well all over the world..

Thanks for checking out the transcription. However, I disagree about how you say there is nothing new in these solos and that Eric and Vincent do not have their own musical personalities. Sorry that you feel that way and hope you will continue to check them out to realize they do have their own voices.

@@WesleyChinTranscriptionsIt's not so bad if they have a 'conventional' way of playing. What is important is that this Music stays alive and what it brings even now in 2022. And finally this is only my opinion and it doesn't matter, you have every right to dispute it. I also hear your arguments. Your channel is very good and congratulate you for your work for the music.

As annoying as Eric's playing can be at times. The rhythm section did him no favors as he got deeper into his solo. With that being said it was 3 choruses too long lol
