Great overview and congrats on a super nice bike. Love the GPMucci skid plate. Not sure if I missed it, but can you tell me what engine guard/crash bars you have fitted? Look like Hepco & Becker? How would you rate them? Seems there are a few options, either from factory, Heed (not getting great reviews), Outback Motortech (just coming out with theirs), SW Motech (have those on my GS and they are solid). What made you choose yours? Thanks!
@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
Good eye, I do have the H&B crash-bars. I went with Hepco&Becker because they have a very solid reputation and I was looking for crash-bars that had two connecting cross-bars (left side to right side) to distribute the load from an impact. H&B’s bars fit my requirements. The fit is excellent, they feel very sturdy and they have a quality powder coat finish. I haven’t tested (i.e. crashed) them yet but I’ve heard very good things from others. I’ve also heard very poor reviews about the Heed products. I haven’t heard much about the SW Motech but they’ve been good to me in the past, but I don’t care for their compatible skid plate; to me it looks like Swiss cheese meets a geometry test. I saw the Tuareg promo video for Outback Motortech, they look impressively sturdy but also heavy and they jut outwards from the bike quite a bit; but those all might be good things if they provide better protection. That’s my 2 cents.

@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
The way that the rackless panniers are attached and the support straps that weave across the top of the panniers mostly prevent them from sagging, with the right pannier just barely resting against the carbon fiber heat shield on the front quarter of the Arrow Sonora muffler. Also the heat from the FULL arrow exhaust runs so cool that exhaust heat is no longer an issue.

@Lazy-Pilot, how has the support from Fay Meyers and Imperial Sport Bikes in Denver, CO area been ? COSprings to their location bit of a drive. Have you had any difficulty booking the bike in for warranty service, long leads time for appointment ? Have you experienced any parts shortages, long lead times on consumables, replacement components (warranty or purchase), (not including your comfort seat lead time) ? Looking at Tuareg 660 or Tenere 700 for my use, split primarily between East Coast and Midwest. Most likely trailering or shipping across the country, not sure I would like to ride either on expressways for that duration. Thank you for the videos and content. Appreciate the various products feedback, yes even the Garmin! Deciding on one of these bikes in next couple days. Best regards, jamesA
@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
I’ve spoken with Fay Meyers a couple times and I’ve had good luck with them in the past. Ultimately I decided to give my business to Imperial because they have a really solid reputation and they have numerous mechanics that are Race Day Ducati & Aprilia mechanics so they have expert level experience with the 660 engine on the road bikes. My experience with them has been fantastic. That said, in late summer Colorado Springs Powersports became an Aprilia dealer and I dealt with them on a separate motorcycle issue and was pleased. So I will probably see them in the future for most issues, but if I ever need a full rebuild for some reason, Imperial will likely see me again. Also, no issue sourcing parts. I had to wait 6 days for a water pump cover replacement to arrive, Imperial got me in quickly and the work performed has been perfect so far.

@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
Thank you! I do plan on adding them at some point. I keep changing my mind on what type of lights I want, I think a single 6 or 8 inch (130 or 175mm) light bar would fit nicely under the headlight on the crash-bar, or two smaller lamps mounted near the top corners. Then I need to decide if I’m going to wire it into the factory fog light switch or an add-on switch, etc. I’ll have it figured out by spring time.

Hi Ran, thanks for sharing your experiences, opinions, mods and so on... I'm trying to connect my new screen (with Carplay C5), currently is connect to USB port, but I would like to connect fixed with the wires provide in some part of dash to 12 V, so, my question is: How do you connected or wiring exactly your Garmin GPS to USB wire?, will be possible to do a video exclusively for that (sorry, I know it is very complicated due you need many time), a lot of people is very interested in that, as you commented in the video, we need to take care with CAN connections, thanks in advance and continuous your contribution in the channel which is very appreciated for us.
@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot 11 месяцев назад
Hi, I removed the “APRILIA” panel covering the instrument tower and tapped into the 12V power on the backside of the USB port. Yes, be careful with the CANBUS system, I would be careful not to solder wires. Instead, use a quality ScotchLok connector to tap the power, and use dielectric grease on the connector to keep water/rust out. I’ve included a link, these are “double-bite” connectors that gets two points of contact on each wire (superior to the cheap “single-bite” connectors). Sorry for the late response, it’s been a busy. 85% sure it was an M8. I had some spare bolts with a Phillips head that only needed to be cut to length, about 1-1/2 inches (38mm). And I ended up switching out the tie-down rings in this video with a slotted ring, made by Giant Loop. These require me to only loosen the straps and slide the straps out, versus having to spend significantly more time fully pulling them through a mounting ring. www.cyclegear.com/accessories/giant-loop-mounts-2023?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD_Ag1d0R_JqxZ3QDQySK1PCVfCEe&gclid=CjwKCAjw3NyxBhBmEiwAyofDYb8ia3mvivOl2gTwBWr7fdgFolyb8IMDzQvPM7NwpJOe4USL4n9xDRoCkecQAvD_BwE

Hi! I know I am a little late to the game but thank you for your video. Have you done any long highway miles on the Tuareg yet? And if so, how long, and how was the comfort? Thank you!
@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
The longest continuous stretch I’ve done is 5 hours of highway riding. Otherwise it’s been day long BDR rides with a few breaks built in. The comfort is going to depend on some personal things, like your height, weight, and adjustments to wind protection to fit your needs. The right wind screen will be necessary for your height, especially if you have a sun visor (“peak”) on your helmet. The right seat for your butt (&weight). I personally found the stock seat to be surprisingly comfortable on that 5 hour ride. It has the power to go well faster but I wouldn’t cruise at speeds over 75mph all day long, that would keep it revv’d a little too high. I’ve done interstate rides for an hour at 85mph but that’s about as long as I would push it. I can’t believe how often I use the cruise on pavement, it really helps me to relax more on the bike and takes away a lot of fatigue. I don’t think the bike is suited well for distance rides on pavement in stock form but it could be modified to fit that role. In stock form it’s really suited for half day on pavement to hit the backroads and trails. Super fun bike on and off road though, very balanced and predictable.
@porkshank13
@porkshank13 Год назад
@@lazy-pilot Wow! Thank you for taking the time for such a thorough response! It's tough. Like most I am looking for the unicorn bike that doesn't exist but so far the Tuareg seems the closest IMO. The ultimate answer for me would be two bikes, but I don't have the space or finances for that at the moment and even if I did my ideal would be to ride to the BDR's versus trailer a bike. Considering I live in the northeast that means multiday trips on the road. I am also planning on doing the TAT next year and was going to ride back home by road versus ship my bike like some do. Ah well ... first world problems. Thanks again!

@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
I changed it over at about 700 miles. The Aprilia dealers around here are very cool, that said I’ve never met a dealer, car or motorcycle, that would void your warranty for an aftermarket part unless they could specifically point to it as the cause of a failure. And even then they would just deny you the warranty work, not void your warranty. My dealer actually encouraged me to change out the full exhaust.

@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
The break-in period and first service is at 620miles/1000km. I would recommend installing a tuner with the full exhaust; you’d probably be fine with stock map if you only changed out the muffler. That said I would highly recommend the full no-cat exhaust if you do have to worry about emissions testing. I have an UP-MAP tuner and had one of the first Tuaregs running the test map for US bikes. I’ve had zero issues with it. Gabro Racing built the tune on the UP-MAP store, he did a nice job!

Hello Dan , I have the same bike, ready to add some protection, and tires, what do you suggest for front and back tires? 50 on/ 50 off. And how durable is the Thor skid plate so far. Looking at T-Rex skid plate as does not use motor for support, also does the headlight guard restrict beam? Thx
@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
Hi Greg. I’m really liking my Motoz Tractionator GPS on the rear because I like the traction and it’s getting great wear so far; it is a 50/50 tire. You could certainly match the front tire, I prefer to run something more aggressive for off-road on the front that still has great street manners and for me that’s the Continental TwinDuro TKC80. Even with this setup I expect the front tire will outlast the rear. The THOR skidplate has taken some big hits and it’s holding up fantastically well. The powder coat finish is holding up better than expected on the bottom, but the small rocks being slung off the front tire were chipping away at the finish so I added some frame protection tape that can be sacrificed and changed out occasionally. The headlight guard doesn’t significantly interfere with the light beam but I find the light output underwhelming and if I were to ride this more at night I’d be in a hurry to find an auxiliary lighting solution.

Did you need to get it retuned / mapped after the full arrow system was installed? . Also K&N Fliters Australia we’re I live do a Form filter now rather then the cartridge stock one .
@lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
The map I’m using was uploaded via an UpMap tuner and Gabro Racing used the exact set-up I’m running when he (Gabro) designed the map. So the stock air filter, full Arrow exhaust with Sonora muffler. I would also appreciate a foam filter but haven’t found one so I continue to run the stock. The K&N oiled cotton filters don’t do as well in the dry dusty conditions here in Colorado; I assume the same applies for you in many places you’re riding in Australia. Just for grins, I had my local Aprilia dealer put the bike on their dyno to verify the results of Gabro’s tune, they seemed to be happy with the results.

Once you finally have that panel removed. I recommend using using a light amount of epoxy on blind-nuts to keep them from spinning.

Hi Harry, the short stems are from a USA seller on Etsy. The Sun Visor was from a UK seller on Etsy. AF1 Racing also offers short stems on their website. I think they have a European and USA website. Maybe give them a look. I can only speak for the USA seller, who offers a good product. You can tell they’re 3D printed, but they very very strong and the fit is spot on.

Hey Tom, you must have missed my response to your question a couple weeks ago on my GP Mucci skid plate video. Here that is: I originally bought the muffler from Moto-Sound.com and the header from AF1 Racing in Austin TX. AF1 has both the Arrow header and Arrow Sonora muffler in stock. But some reason AF1 are now asking a premium for both, especially the muffler. I’ve had great success buying from international vendors when sourcing parts for my Tuareg and with the nearly one-to-one exchange rate USD to EUROS, you can find some VERY deep discounts even with international shipping. Oddly enough every single thing I’ve ordered from Italy, Austria, etc has come to my doorstep faster than from the domestic vendors. I’ve included two links: www.af1racing.com/tuareg-660-performance-parts www.moto-sound.com/en/module/ambjolisearch/jolisearch?s=Tuareg

Good eye. It is installed at a 90 degree on the rear brake (right) side. The leash on shifter (left) side was reinstalled that way by the dealership when they reinstalled the skidplate; I have since fixed that. @lazy-pilot
@lazy-pilot Год назад
Apologies, I just saw your question. Honestly I didn’t have that much difficulty getting screws out for the dash plate. If you haven’t already solved the issue, I would recommend using a PB Blaster penetrating fluid (just a little bit) on each screw to help the threads break free. And then I actually used a small amount of epoxy on the outside corners of the nuts to trap them into place without making totally impossible to remove later by scraping away the epoxy. I also gel superglued the nuts for the windshield into place to make it incredibly easier to reinstall the windshield; once again the nuts are still removable in the future if needed as I only used a small amount of glue.

Bonjour! Those are axle sliders from Evotech. They install with a long bolt through the hollow axles. Their purpose is to provide protection for the forks and swingarm by contacting the ground first and being a sacrificial piece if the motorcycle were to low-side and go sliding down the road. They prevent a lot of damage to the motorcycle on-road, but provide little or no protection off-road.

For you, since you’re mostly street I would recommend the Motoz Tractionator GPS front and rear. Excellent balance on and off road, with impressive mileage. I will continue to run a Continental TKC80 in the front and the Tractionator GPS in the rear because I feel it’s the ideal setup for me. I do a lot of dirt riding. I can’t compare them to the factory Scorpions because I had the dealer take them off and replace them with TKC80s front&rear. The rear TKC80 wore down extremely fast in 800 miles, but the front wore as expected. I’ve been very happy with the combination of traction/wear on the Tractionator GPS. It ended up being a very minor issue for everyone that had it; everyone would continue riding as it would lose less than 100ml of oil during a 1,000mi ride. The fix was covered completely under warranty, it took 3 days for the dealer to get the part and about 2.5 hours in the shop for replacement.
