WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

Patrick I don't want to tell you how to do it but I use a different method.With thin glass about 3/16" or 4 mm I go for full flake cover straight away.With your pad method your flake travel is restricted at times.I actually place the blank on its edge and supported by that edge I just pressure flake from the top of the extreme edge down and out.I generally get at least 1" flakes .Full cover in one pass.I like your work but that just seems real hard to get to the finished point.By they way it does look brilliant.You have helped me more than any other knapper.Your videos are the ones I recomend to others always.happy knapping old school Richie Australia

Thanks for doing this video. Once you see someone else do it you know it’s possible 😃👍. Not much good stone in my area. The Indians used white Quartz or quartzite. I have tried old Tv picture tubes toilet tanks fused glass and bottle bottoms.

I just tossed a stained glass lamp shade kit. It was older stained glass. The textured side was much more wavy. It had a wood grain that made some areas really thin. so much I didn’t think it would be worth it. The stuff you have looks much flatter. Nice job Patrick!

That thin glass is tough. Nice work. I can only work that stuff on soft leather. Especially if I use indirect. Put the leather on the edge and tap the platform lightly. I made a thumb hole type pad that works well for support. Kinda triangle shaped with a thumb hole and enough leather to cover the palm well. Tiny taps and a flat tip for your punch. Over shot flakes can be an issue if you don't let the leather on your hand side stop the flakes. I don't need to tell you anything about knapping but it's been helpful for me to do that trick. I learned it from Freezecracked. That leather is amazing for really sinking flakes. Especially on obsidian.

I wonder if two pieces or sheets can be fused together in a kiln. Would it keep the pattern or not? If it worked it would make the glass thicker.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 11 месяцев назад
Yes, you can stack and fuse these in a kiln, and the colors would remain relatively intact. I used to have several disks of fused glass made by a friend, but I found them to be slightly inconsistent and not as knappable as bottle bottoms.

The local church is getting ready to rebuild and they're doing away with the stained glass. The pastor is my cousin so I'm gonna ask if I can have the glass. Or buy it from the church. Some beautiful reds,blues and yellows.

@@KnapperJackCrafty spoke to him and he said he was giving most of it to another church which is cool with me but said I could have the one window that on the door that leads to the bathroom. It's like a 3ft by 1.5ft peice of few different colors. Be month or so before it's ready to pick up though.

@@KnapperJackCrafty ahh ok , i will get some then since it seems thicker on film ! some of the patterns and colours are interesting , i also noticed something called "vitrified porcelain" tiles which the description says are high grade coloured porcelain which has been 100% vitrified . i might take a stab at that also since vitrification sounds like it may be glassy porcelain rather than chalky
