In video 1668 we'll take a look at the Squire CP50 combination padlock and identify it's strengths and vulnerabilities. Then I'll show you how I quickly opened and decoded it.

Kinda funny how the packaging says it’s just a low to medium security lock and yet it’s still better than 80% of combination locks available.

Probably because it's not very secure against destructive attacks.

Nice to see that Squire is realistic in their statement that it's just a medium security lock, whereas every other company that markets garbage locks as "maximum security" in spite of having three ways to decode them and two ways to bypass them and saying things like "ten out of ten security!" Right on the packaging. Nice change of pace.

for the price, i'd say that's a pretty decent lock. shielded gates and a disconnected shackle is not bad at all

I have one of these (actually I think it's the smaller brother, CP40), and found a much easier way of decoding it that doesn't involve "tensioning" with the button. Just press down on each code wheel, and it will depress much more when it's on the gate for the correct number for that wheel. Maybe it works with the CP50 as well. I doubt they are very different mechanically.

I can confirm that it works on the CP50 (mine just arrived in the post). Wow, what a weakness this is! How on earth did Bill miss this major flaw? I just set mine to a random number, scrambled it, and got the code in about 30 seconds! I wonder if Squire know about this? This is worse than Master Lock!

Given that this is the company that makes the biggest and strongest padlock known to man (the Squire SS100CS) its not surprising that they can do well even on a cheaper combination padlock.

If I need a combo lock just for convenience purposes, I'll get this one. Considering master locks can be decoded in seconds, and the sesame and master 175 can be bumped open with just about anything solid

Slight tip, don’t over tighten the screw on top after changing the combi number! It makes it stiff to open. You also don’t need to take the screw out completely, just loosen it to change the combi.

Yep, i pushed the button in hard and turn the dial with the most resistance and wait for an easing in both the button and the dial. I moved on to the next dial. Great feeling when that button goes in all the way! Persevere with it and remember the move into the gate is subtle!

I stock these locks as they are better than other combination locks, however, I would recommend using a 50mm lock over the 40mm one where possible because the dials on the smaller one are very difficult to use. Personally think these are lower quality than squire’s usual, the plastic housing is a little bit vague, but that’s me being picky!
@Ucofatoffski

Bill, you can use a large ball bearing on the button to not only amplify the feedback from the gates, but it also stops your finger from hurting so much.

I can only assume squire have been working hard to fix the weaknesses (wheel bounce and the button press process). I have not found a single approach for my cp60... the wheels bounce but totally random and unrelated to the combination, and the button depress and look for binders, impossible; when the button is depressed hard, all wheels bind. I have opened plenty cp40 and cp50, no trouble, frighteningly quickly, actually - all with the wheel bounce approach. But the cp60 I received today is not at all susceptible. I am extremely pleased whilst also being annoyed, as the point of buying the lock was for blindfolded, or in the dark, or behind the back opening practice. All I can say is well done squire!!!
@JooshYT
@JooshYT 4 года назад
Just thought i'd add onto this, i found this method of getting into the lock rather tedious. Found a much better way. If you make sure all the wheels are on numbers. Then push down on the button and keep pushing down. Press downward on one of the wheels you will either feel it push down a bit, or not at all. Or just a little bit. If you find the number that it pushes down the most on when tension is on the barrel then thats your gate! Just keep typing each number until you find the right one, you'll know when you feel it. I spent literally hours trying this way with an rather beaten up CP50 and it was just horrible feeling for this 'play' and i just couldn't get it figured. If your struggling try the push down method on the wheel (:

@@chrisblack5500 working from left to right. Push downwards on one of the dials, see how far down it pushes. Change the value to the next number. Push again. Do this untill you find the number that pushes down the furthest on that wheel, then go onto the next wheel.

*VERY EASY METHOD* I was having some serious trouble with this lock, but I found a pretty decent method, so here it is: note: some of these steps are redundant, but make it clearer how to do this. 1. *set the code to* 5-5-5-5 2. *rotate each dial right half a turn - so that the grooves are centered.* (the direction of the E on the SQUIRE text) 3. *choose a dial* (I find dial 2 to be by far the easiest) 4. *keep rotating that dial clockwise 1 turn* (so that it remains with the groove centered) 5. *after each rotation check to see how loose the dial is by tapping on it* (it should also be quite raised, get a good side view) 6. *set it to the dial to the loosest groove* 7. *repeat from step 3 for the remaining dials* (note: I find dial 4 to be generally quite tricky, so I do 2 -> 1 -> 3 -> trial and error) 8. *turn all dials left half a turn - so that numbers are showing* (the direction of the S on the SQUIRE text) 9. *boop*

Use less pressure on the button. There's another way too, the gates feel different, push the button and wiggle the wheels back and forth if a wheel is in the right position it will have more play in it. Once you feel the difference it should be easy to decode within five minutes.

I wrote to Squire Locks about the bouncy recoding issue and here is their reply, "Someone discovered that if you pushed the wheels down on each number the correct number would bounce significantly more, this issue has now been engineered out and all the numbers bounce the same, meaning it is not possible to discover the code in this way."

We use these at work on climable height gates with a medium quality chain, the purpose being to deter gates being left open and unn authorised vehicles. They are a realistic deterent that works in a situation with multiple people needing acess. True they can be easily defeated but do can more expensive locks but for the price point they are fine and long term they do stand up to regular use and weather.

Why are there no (deeper) false gates? I have and sell the 9 rated armored cable bike combination lock. It's already hard to open if you know the number. All 5 digits have to be set absolute precise. There is no change mechanism. The ring with the numbers has just to be turned with a special wrench while the lock is open. An do the latter precise if you want to be able to open it ever again. I would love to see one of them tested.

These videos should be banned. People agreed to pay for the security functionality (however basic or advanced) that this provides. If you want to share *general* vulnerability information fine; but step-by-step how to completely circumvent them, no. It's arguably unethical, but definitely unfair to lock owners. Share picking information among locksmith peers, and manufacturer, but not with the world.
