Does your Apple Pencil perform like 11:47 or did I drop my pen too many times?
@3polygons

I was a bit shocked, too...

Mine doesn’t do that. Have you tried changing the tip? Or it could be the screen protector. I put on a screen protector once and it made my pencil jiggle so bad it reminded me of N-trig pens of 2012. I now have something else on my iPad Pro and paperlike on the mini and it all seems good.

@@sloppynyuszi Mine's very smooth with Procreate. But CSP, Infinite Painter and Medibang are not as smooth, as shown in the video. I've tested different pen tips and on two iPad Pros. So maybe it is really a problem with the pen. Not sure.

@@teohontech7141 ah, I haven’t got CSP and MediBang installed on my iPad. Infinite painter has line smoothing on my pen brushes going on, so I can’t judge. I tried Artstudio, Affinity designer, Callipeg, Ibis Paint Sketchbook pro and Procreate. So it could be that these apps have been optimised better for Apple Pencil. Seems pretty smooth for me. I’m comparing it to my Surface Pro 8, Fujitsu Quadreno with Lamy pen and Cintiq Pro 24. So not as much experience as you 😅 they all seem good enough that if something looks off I can’t blame the technology but myself. 😂 But it looks like your pen is fine, but apple requires the developers to fix more underlying issues, which sucks if you are using a more niche app, that might not have the know how for the pen, but has other neat features.

Mine does! I have a Huion, and it's a LOT smoother, easier line control (size variation, steadiness etc). I use my fiancé's iPad when I'm not at home, and the drawing experience isn't amazing

i recently upgraded from a 2017 huion pen tablet with only 2048 levels of pressure to a xppen deco pro gen2 xl. i've been drawing non stop. with the huion, i would only sit to draw if i had a deadline, and i hated it. now as corny as it may sound i feel like i had just fallen in love with digital painting again. this damn tablet and its damn pen are sooooo perfect, i almost peed myself when i tried it for the first time. the quality of the line is something i've never seen. i have tried the wacom intuos and some others in the past but nothing stands against the xppen.

Never knew there was 16k pressure levels already
@asimian8500
@asimian8500 3 месяца назад
It's a marketing gimmick. What's more important is the pressure range from IAF (initial activation force) to max pressure. Even the old Wacom tablets with 2K pressure are more than good enough since they have a great pressure range. Non-Wacom pens aren't as sensitive even in 2024. If you've never used a Wacom you wouldn't understand.

I wish I found exact numbers out of curiosity for the Apple Pencil. I remember when it launched I read somewhere it’s a 1024. Which in 2015 when it came out I think was OK. I googled now, and some Reddit response came up saying it’s around 2048. Apple has been pretty good to be quiet about these specs, because they really don’t matter at this point. I just worry about jiggle lines and smoothness. All the top pens are negligible at this point.
@teohontech7141

Back in 2018 when Apple Pencil 2 was released, pen display companies have products with 8K levels of pressure already. I don't know how many pressure levels Apple Pencil supports but 2048 seems reasonable.
@3polygons
@3polygons Год назад
Testing Wacom and Huion I realized values of pressure don't convert exactly in comparisons.. for whatever the reason, a brand with lower pressure values can get better sensitivity, and also the other way round... I am a bit lost with that value. This apparently happens too with RPS... some pen-tablets with lower report rate value do get less lag (makes no sense to me, I guess the magnetic grid of the tablet, screen HZs and many other things factor in).... Luckily reviewers like Teoh make tests, as IMO it is in action when stuff gets cleared up. In this test I just watched, at least in the recorded video it seems the 8k of the Huion behave very similarly to the 16k of the XP, in initial activation and how thin it can go... Which was not what I expected... But the result is what counts. Also, I don't know if it is my perception, but it did seemed to me that the new XP-Pen is slightly less wobbly in lines (which is key for me) than the Huion, and, - shockingly- the Apple Pen more wobbly than both. That said... Back in the day I spent close to an hour drawing with an iPad Pro at a mall, with an Apple Pen 2.0, and my conclusion (comparing to a Wacom experience) was solidly that the thing had been kind of over hyped.
@sloppynyuszi
@sloppynyuszi Год назад
@@teohontech7141 yeah, I wonder if Apple did anything with the Apple Pencil 2 when it came to pressure. It feels the same to me. Only the charging method and the hidden button I disable seemed like the new feature. Honestly pressure sensitivity is an over rated number. I remember back in the day even 1024 being more than fine. The original surface pro with Wacom pen I remember being fine. Remember switching to surface pro 3 and that pen was such a down grade.

Nice. I think wintab and windows ink only support up to 2048 levels of sensitivity input. Similar for whatever Mac input is. I think that is why going more than 4096 levels doesn't feel much different.
@3polygons
@3polygons Год назад
It very strongly depends on the driver and tablet quality. Both of which vary wildly from brand to brand. In some cases, one is better of (Wacom, depending on the painting software, though) with Wintab, as Windows INK is definitely limited not only in levels of pressure (Windows INK was made mostly for hand writing), has other problems. But in the past for certain apps, the XP-Pen was better off with Windows INK, as the driver was terrible. Currently, I dunno. In my experience with Affinity Photo (yep, for technical reasons I do paint with that...even while it is not the best tool for painting) , and Affinity suite in general, in that case Windows INK is not the best solution, and the "custom" support (they call it "high precision" in input tab settings) which they made works better (surely it's using Wintab), also gets fewer issues with the UI, with my Wacom. In Clip Studio, again, with a Wacom, Wintab seems to work great. With other apps, is a mixed bag. My findings are that about pressure sensitivity, lag, etc, the key factor tends to be the app.
