I love this! I made a ruff from a frilly petticoat. I folded it in half and covered it with Mod Podge. When it was dry, I added a strand of pearls along the edge. It looks really nice with my Queen Elizabeth costume. I am going to attempt making a collar like yours- thanks for the easy to follow instructions!

I am planning a kit with not one… not two… but three separate dang ruffs (neck and wrists) we’ll see if I follow through with the wrists… 🤔 This is going to be so much work. Plus they have redwork embroidery around the edges.

Pull the grain! omg learned that in 7th grade and never stopped using it. I think a puff iron is the accessory you need badly.

I’m planning on making a mushroom queen costume for a ren fair later this year, with a ruff that looks like an upside down mushroom, so this will definitely help!!

A tip today - set your st length of a plain zig zag not reinforced to premark your gathered ruff top edge with either a wingstitch or large machine needle. Duplicate the attachment sewing holes on the collar. I started my sewing path with a lovely Chinese fabric store owner who demanded I purchase my 1475cd as-my first pro machine. I said that day, as now, “ wow, you can count the sts. “ That was in 1986. Still have my receipt. This is still my workhorse with a precision stitch not matched by any other home sewing machine because of Pfaffs built in walking foot and its solid steel German precision guts. Since I needed to sew miles of gathering, (and many miles before I sleep.... ) I became a “maven” of gathers. See Ya!

I adore your final completed outfit , it's so pretty ! I'm quite in love with the details of layering , colouring , fabrics etc , maybe my ancestors wore a similar dress then too etc ! And Ruffology is quite a science ! Congratulations !

I'm sure he would make quite the expert video, he is amazing! It was my first ruff of this sort, and I'm so glad you liked the video. It was fun to do the project and definitely a few places where I was feeling it out as I went along. ;)

Cartridge marking for gathering different ruffs works very well, and is so accurate. A fantastic book is The Art of Fabric Manipulation by Colette Wolff. Worked my way through that in a year. Made my final paper and project the night before it was due out of wet paper that I dried in my hotel room in the microwave. lol. The pieces were hanging on walls chairs shower curtains ! Hey, why else would the hotel in Ann Arbor MI put a microwave in my room?

Thank you so much for sharing the book and your wonderful stories! That sounds like it was quite the adventure and most obvious use for a microwave!

It's so fun to explore and time travel! ;) I added links to the books - it seems Patterns of Fashion 4 (the one with a lot on ruffs) has gone up quite a bit in price since it first came out. The paintings are by Hendrick Avercamp. I hope that helps!

Hi again-It is very hard to hear you, your sound pickup is low, and the music is overcoming your voice. Wish I was there to help you filming the sewing video. It could be my ears from years and years of sewing in my house with my “ El Factoria Machina de corsair muy rapido” . Sounded and shook the 40 x 40 room like a jack hammer.
