16th June 1846: Pope Pius IX begins the longest ever reign of a Catholic Pope

A particular issue facing the 50 members of the College of Cardinals who attended the conclave regarded the future governance of the Papal States, which the new Pope would rule. A conservative faction wished to see the continuation of a policy of papal absolutism, while more moderate cardinals hoped for some liberal reforms.
Going against the general mood of the rulers of Europe who wished to see a conservative Pope, the moderate Cardinal Bernetti successfully persuaded other like-minded cardinals to vote for Mastai-Ferretti. The papal historian Valérie Pirie wrote that, as one of the scrutineers responsible for recording the votes of the conclave, Mastai-Ferretti therefore proclaimed his own election.
His appointment was met with enthusiasm from European liberals, and he was celebrated by English Protestants as a ‘friend of light’. Having named himself Pius after Pope Pius VII, the first years of the new Pope’s rule saw a number of liberal actions including the release of political prisoners and the beginnings of a constitution for the Papal States. However, the revolutions of 1848-49 and a number of nationalist terrorist attacks began to turn him away from this initially liberal agenda.
By the 1850s Pius IX had become more conservative, and he began to consolidate the power of the Church. The capture of the Papal States by the Italian Army in 1870, however, led to him declaring himself the ‘Prisoner of the Vatican’.

Praises to you, most blessed Pius IX, Bishop of Rome and Servant of the Servants of God. Marked by the trials of the aftermath of France's scourge upon Europe, your Pontificate would be the longest served since that of Saint Peter, and throughout you would tirelessly champion the long-held ways of Europe in the face of gripping nationalism and modernity. As Supreme Pontiff, you would oversee the convention of the First Vatican Council, where Papal Infallibility would be declared, and the central government of the Papacy and the Catholic Church would be formalized upon the Vatican within Rome. Even despite the usurpation of your temporal power by the irreverent Italian nationalists, your faith and perseverance would ensure the survival of the Holy See well into the 20th century. O Holy Father, the time has come for the pillars of your faith to once more bear the sacred being of your papacy. Can you take upon your shoulders the will of God to lead the faithful? Can you spread the light of His Holy Mother Church against the darkness that grips this age? Can you build a civilization that stands the test of time?

Apparently, the Austrian Emperor tried to excercise Jus Exclusivie(Right of Exclusion) on Mastai's-Ferettis candidacy but his Cardinal representative came to the conclave too late to deliver the veto and thus became Pius IX.

There's really not much I can reply other than "no, they're definitely Pope Pius IX". Many Popes adopted similar poses for official portraits, but the image on the thumbnail is a quite famous image called "Pius IX and his Nobile Anticamera Segreta". This features a number of other clerics including Mons. De Mérode on the far left who died in 1874, thirty years before the election of Pius X.

Interesting to know that Pius IX had the longest reign of "a Catholic Pope". I wonder who was the longest-reigning Protestant Pope?

The Coptic Orthodox church has a Pope as well (and was the first recorded use of the title - about 200 years before it was applied to the Bishop of Rome)
