My favorite drummer is playing well beyond her years. From her vibrant happy smile to her energetic and truly amazing drumming, I really like this woman. Thank you for your talent, beauty, and life
Favolosa SENRI !!!
15:18 How refreshing is her genuine humility? In a world of indulgence, inflated self-importance and people who achieve fame and fortune with very little talent, Senri is a real breath of fresh air. How could anyone not be totally enamoured by her crazy combination of world class talent and humility.
Jaw on the floor chops from everyone in the band. But that drummer is the bomb. There are a lot of great drummers coming out of Asia. And she seems to havr so much joy too.
I started listening to fusion jazz when I was younger but when I saw Senri play on drums, That just amplified my love for fusion jazz even more since Senri is the most outstanding and best drummer I have ever heard.
I am totally buzzed. Incredible. It is one of the great hopes of our time that you young talents bring the really important means of culture and life forward and set new standards. what a pleasure to listen and see.
i'm a 56 year old drummer, and i've waited my entire life to see a female drummer of such exceptional quality headline at a major jazz event. i am so inspired. and it makes all the difference in the world for young girls see such a talented role model. with gender busting talent like Senri and Esperanza Spalding the jazz world is hopefully changing, for the better.
carlos castenada now that’s big time virtue signaling ... now that you’ve told the world how supportive of women and more broad minded than most you have been « your « entire life » (really? You’ve been longing for female drummers for 56 years??) how about focusing on the music, whichever sex the player is?...
@@bluetv6386 I don't think Carlos meant to sound sexist. Imagine what things were like 56 years ago. It was a different time for women and we weren't as empowered or recognized. Carlos has probably seen many women overlooked for their talents just 8 that were female. I didn't think he was being fecicious at all. Anyway, just my 2¥.
@@ceecee8757 I am sure NOT "sounding sexist" was (or even NOT "being" sexist is) the main thing on his mind. (and I m sure he's a really nice guy by the way) Now let s drop comments about her sex and let s focus on her playing.
@@bluetv6386 What he was saying is not sexist whatsoever but truthful. I feel exactly the same way as him but wouldn't say "longing" but "looking forward to" instead not that he said anything wrong. Teri Lyne Carrington and Sheila E were probably the first female drummers that I saw that blew me away. I feel like he was just giving her credit where it's due is all. For a long time there weren't many female drummers who played at such a high level. Now there are many. That is noteworthy. Why should someone tell someone else how to think, feel and communicate? That's obnoxious. He wasn't. What are you a moderator for this channel?
I can’t understand how in the world they remember every single note, section, break, freaking EVERYTHING! No charts here. All in the ole brain box. Absolutely incredible. Not to mention the insane playing. 😮
When you're as good as Senri-san is, you can get other outstanding musicians to play with you. Armand and Philippe are top-notch. I would travel far to see this trio play.
i don't often find myself commenting out loud when no one is around...but i kept saying "my god!" whne she destroyed those fills, i lost it. she's remarkable. protecc at all costs.
Senri is one of the most intelligent drummers you'll ever hear; knows where she is in the music at all times; and talk about multi-tasking! she keeps multiple rhythms going in compound meters; never misses a beat and drives the music forward. One of the best jazz/rock drummers in the world. Period. IMHO.
I absolutely agree with ffstopP... I do reckon they are also an aswesome trio... which I'm pretty sure someone else has mentioned too... their timing together is absolute gold... they nail it yeah :-)
Armand, Philippe, and Senri are the most exciting contemporary jazz and fusion group I've heard, PERIOD! I hope they'll reform after COVID-19 disappears.
Well if you're looking at how to empower women, there you have it. When you work on your skills so much, no need to use your body. Instant respect. Funny how someone like Anika Nilles doesn't need to be pretty either (and the irony is, both those ladies are beautiful). But back to the music : absolutely awesome.
She actually kind of looks cute, in fact most Japanese musicians and musicians in the west also tend to look better than your average random person off the street. This is because to be successful you have to have both skills and look somewhat acceptable. There are people who are ugly and have skills, but barely any company wants to get behind them. Hope you understand.
Notice! Being such a great and talented musician she is so modest and unpretentious! So grateful to her partners, to her destiny, to all that she has in her life. So respectful to her audience and the God! Deep appreciation to her for being who she is!
She's so great! Saw her at a clinic. Modest and sweet. She was hesitant to sign my phone case because it was new. She said ,"Really?". She stayed until everyone had a chance to speak and take a photo with her. No one was disappointed. I look forward to seeing lots of her.
There Is perhaps a Goldmine ($$) awaiting of various American and Japanese collaboration of Jazz Musicians as of 2019. PRODUCERS WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE ! A Dynamic fresh offering to the world!
I've been playing AT jazz drums for nigh-on 40 years--Saeri Kawaguchi is, in my humble opinion, the greatest natural, innate, intuitive drummer I have EVER seen! I could cry tears of joy just watching her play, much less at even attempting to absorb such an incomprehensible, extemperaneous genius musical architectural (*whew*!), unbelievable output! I am in love!!
I dunno, she took a lot of lessons from a top drummer. I once heard one of his other students and she was just as good as SK. Music in Tokyo is incredibly good but I think it is mostly the result of millions of people who began diligent study starting at age three. Junior high school bands are as good or better than USA college bands. Those who emerge as the best are very good indeed. The other arts -- painting, writing, dance -- are just the same. Japan has great hip hop dance.
blue Rondo, Senri is phenomenal. I want people to stop qualifying her as the best female drummer, and just call her one of the best contemporary drummers period, regardless of gender. 9/8 time with 4/4 side rhythm, and a personal interpretation of her own, Joe Morello would be not ashamed to hear her play this, and maybe even impressed.
Exactly. Who is the best male drummer by the way? Transsexual drummer? Gay drummer? Hetero drummer? I think Chris Coleman is the best fat drummer right now. Eric Moore and Dennis Chambers 2nd. Weckl the best gray-haired one.
I completely agree in this. I don't want to hear about this stupid gender view. I can refer to what I heard a female welder replied to same type of stupid question, she replied..... "it's not that one you weld with.......! ." Senri is a marvelous drummer... Period
Agreed. The entire construct implies that male drummers hold the superior position. It's ignorant. She has all the tools, the technique & she swings the beat but what stands out to me is just how crisply she plays. Oh my.
so, young youtube sensations, it's nice to see you playing along to Tom Sawyer and Dream Theater tracks but this is what you should aspire to. Creating your own exciting original drum parts. This is where the rubber meets the road.
It's been a LONG time since I've heard fusion this good - I will definitely be listening for more. And I agree, enough of the "female drummer" garbage - no one talks about Galway or Valentino being "male flutists" even though the majority of flute players in schools and amateur groups are female. Either you have chops or you don't.
Why are lots of people need to classify someone as the best. There are great drummers out there , male and female... There is NO best drummer! Its all a matter of taste...
Maybe. But there are better drummers than others in terms of pure skill and sensitivity to music. She has both. Also, this is Jazz music. Again, this is Jazz music.
Thanks for the upload. This is very recent, right? Senri always amazes me, such a joy to watch her play (with joy). The other two are great too, of course.
This is incredibly good. Very tight performance. As good as anything I have seen from other great musicians. I also love the graceful way her arms move. So poetic. And, her co-performers are top-notch in their own right.
Different genre but check out the best new rock drummer in the world - Akane Hirose, also a Japanese girl. She's even better live. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MZIJ2vFxu9Y.html
No doubt, she is the future of modern drumming, and divine instrument of great musical talent. A new drummer prodigy delivered for all to enjoy. I am always excited to see or hear her play. May GOD continue to bless her and her musical abilities!!!!! Much love for Seri Kawaguchi.
Agreed - what a line-up that would be! I've been lucky enough to see Hiromi 3 times and talk with her after a show, but I haven't seen the others yet - good call though on the line-up!
They feel empowered by their own thought of showing anger..sort of like an asswipe flipping the bird while driving inside their car where they feel safe from getting their butt kicked. Senri is a great drummer and any thumbs down are like from the kind of people who would throw a rock at a moving car.
She just does this so easily - there was one moment right near the end when she banged out a particularly complex fill, there was a moment of effort in her eyes. She is supernatural.
Wow, thank you. I'd not heard of this young lady and her performance blew me away. To play all those odd time signatures perfectly was just sensational.
Is this the only real fusion power trio to match Hiromi's? There was nothing like this when I was young. The musicians here are like top Olympic performers. Mortals, stay home.
Can anyone please tell me whose silhouette is on Armand's (bassist) t-shirt? I thought it might be Louis Armstrong or Coltrane. This trio is so tight. So glad she hooked up with two veteran jazz players, she's world-class in talent, humility and she's cute too!
Can't get enough of her playing the drums, her facial expressions and her grins :). I don't know how many times I have to listen and watch this to get enough of it. She does with drums what I always thought about drums: they allow you to play music with totality of your body and mind; no other instrument can claim to be able to do it. I am not a musician but, for me, she is the best!
I'm subjected to agree with you. But when you look at the bassist, the keyboardist, and if they had one, a guitarist, when you look at their contribution they would also have to know their stuff (scales, modes, etc) and putting it all together to come up with individuality.........and THIS is what you see and come up with here.
Dang! High powered killer fusion jazz just kicked me into tomorrow! Incredible talented trio with impeccable timing! This is the fourth time I watched and listened to this clip and it still knocks me out! Thank you very much for posting it!
I know you commented some time ago but couldn’t help but comment myself. I saw Return To Forever in London in ‘75/76 and this is just as good. That night was one I’ll never forget ,… The timing of these people is so precise and exact. Awesome to listen too ,… fusion has a world of its own.
I think the discussion here is not meant to belittle anyone's talent at the expense of the other, I think Senri's youth is a factor here, having said this I have been a lover of jazz/rock extremely technical drumming Senri rivals the best of them.
I have been drumming 45 yrs. Senri MAKES me watch hours and hours of her videos on RU-vid and tell other musicians about her and of course the other fine players she performs with! This has been going on for years. I am mesmerized!!!...
Me too! Wow 45 years must be something common as I too have been drumming 45 years, 30 in Christian rock/metal and Praise & Worship at my church, 10 as a worship leader lead singing contemporary praise/rock with my wife Ursula! Senri is the BEST DRUMMER I've ever had the HONOR to see and hear! Happy 22nd Birthday Senri you are truly phenomenal and humble!
