Sigh…this is a voice note of a grandmother sharing her disappointment that though her grandson received a Barbados Vocational Training Board acceptance letter he was turned away. There are a few facts missing that she did not mention. When you receive an acceptance letter from any educational institution it often outlines a DATE by which you have to contact them to let them know you accept your placement. It also states what is required to successful complete the course (books, tools, uniforms etc.). She admits that they were informed the programme was to commence 19th August but due to not having the money to purchase materials he needed he did not go. Note that she never stated that he accepted his placement. He went today and was turned away because his name was not on the enrollment list. Now all I am seeing is the lack of communication on her part to inform the institution of the challenges faced. Had that been done this situation would have not escalated. She is blaming BVTB when she missed the deadline - she simply should have offered an apology along with the explanation of being financially strapped. I also think that when people are wrong instead of seeking to blame other they need to take a step back and be humble especially when they know it’s something that will benefit their loved ones. I think that emotional intelligence was lacking because one can tell that she was frustrated so when she called the institution she may have been overly aggressive and that may not have been acceptable. I would have listened to her mitigating circumstances and tried to calm her. However, if she was getting on bad I would have politely ended the call and that would mean hanging up! No professional will remain on the line to be castigated or insulted when they know they were following protocol. Empathy and Compassion are often displayed when a person is guided by their moral & ethical compass. Had this situation been approached in a better manner I am confident that discretion could have been used but now gran is telling people to vote out the government as though government is to blame for all of society’s problems. She took a serious issue and made it political - there was no absolutely need to go there. It was uncalled for. Having said that I think that this boy needs not be punished or victimized because he has no control over his circumstances. I hope that some calls are made and he is informed to show up for class before this week is over. #thechasefiles #socialissues #education #skillstraining #barbadosvocationaltrainingboard #childrenarethefuture #learningatrade #learningaskill #poor #underprivileged
