This video reminds me that it is time to go through my emergency bucket in my vehicle. I have young grandchildren and my bucket has come in handy many times. I also keep large plastic coffee container with a good lid for potty emergencies. Everyone laughs at me, but it came in handy when stuck in traffic and my 6 year old granddaughter said she had to potty. Told her we would be somewhere in a few minutes and I heard a quiet voice from back there....."hope I don't poop my pants." I asked if she would sit on the container and go and she snatched it from me. (Little gal had to Go!) Handed her some baby wipes to clean herself, popped the lid on the container and opened the windows. Her only complaint was that her little brother did not give her any privacy. Hahahaha.

Hershey bars (unwrapped in a closed-tight container) in the dessert could be fondue with freeze dried fruit. I'm female, and my mind thinks of ways to enjoy chocolate. Heck - just pass me the spoon.

I might suggest lentils are a better choice than pintos. I love pintos but they do require more water and longer cooking than lentils.

People don't seem or want to understand the weather where they live. You probably live in an urban environment, but what was it like 100, 120 years ago? All people see are paved roads and buildings. A LOT of people have moved into the area where my family have lived for over 100 years, and they are amazed it gets to 100 deg. plus on a regular basis, 6 months out of the year. They say "it's not the desert around here why's it so hot? " What I'm getting at is, you're right to be mindful of what you pack in your vehicle. Thanks for all the info you bring us, and sorry for being looong winded. 😄

Kevin you are so right. When it’s a thousand degrees outdoors during the summer and everything, including thin plastic, melts in your car, give some thought as to how your car food is packaged. Same with water.

It isn't food, but "canned heat" is stable and will keep a long time. A simple flame source to heat water for your oatmeal and noodles could make a difference.

All of this food is nice to have and can definitely help but digesting does use a lot of water. If you are stranded in the middle of no where during the summer, I would limit food intake and make sure you have PLENTY of water. Water is the most important prep always IMO

I live in Canada not far from Toronto (5th largest city in North America). I have chastised some New Arrivals for not having a winter coat in their car in the winter. You can drive for an hour and find yourself a 6 to 12 hour walk from shelter and warmth in the winter, one of the reasons it is recommended you stay with your car if you skid off the road. Even in the months when there is 'rough sledding' you can find yourself in a situation where you are a long way from anything that passes for Civilization, particularly if you go North or east into the Canadian Shield. Most Torontonians refer to as 'Cottage Country' (for obvious reasons). You can be on a secondary road (still paved and well maintained) and find yourself in a bad situation after a sever rain or wind storm with the road blocked or washed out. Emergency services will focus on the towns and cities and main roads first, before they check the secondary roads.

I take a half a cup of minute rice, and vacuum seal it. I tested just putting cold water in the bag. It didn’t take very long before it was rehydrated and it was fine to eat. Of course it would be better if you put hot water in it which I also did, it did not damage the bag.
@felinespirits
@felinespirits Год назад
I pack those 'boil-in-bag" rice packets. Same thing, its just individual packets of some sort of Minute Rice. Your way is probably cheaper, but I'm lazy. But you are right...no real need to boil, It will rehydrate is plain water. That is a plus since I use Sterno in my car emergency kit, the water would be hot but no need to worry about boiling.

I have good luck with little bags of unsalted pretzel sticks. They are basically mylar sealed already and handle temp extremes well. Gets the hunger off your back but not so appealing they get snatched before the tummy really starts to rumble. Unsalted to not provoke thirst.

I had one of those puffy bags of Hormel pepperoni in my pantry for ages. Finally took it out a month ago. It was over a year past its date and I figured it would be rancid. It was absolutely delicious. Turns out it has an oxygen absorber in it. I don't know how it would do in a hot environment, but in a pinch, I can imagine eating it on a cracker with some ketchup....

Thank you for your video. I cheated, I just got rid of the car. What an expense that thing was! I'm now somewhat rich as I discover the joys of online shopping and "right to my door" delivery. The Wholesalers where I now do my bulk buying for prepping purposes, delivers right to my door for $30 and saves me the four hour drive and the $30 in gas I have to spend to get there and back. Can't beat that deal. I have my new list started and it's already around the $500 mark. The fifty pound bags of Cornstarch and Baking Powder are back in stock so I'll order them before they are sold out again. I'm tired of buying that crap by the pound. Not to mention the skyrocketing prices. The cost of Pancake mix has gone through the roof so I'm buying a 20kg bag of that stuff, (44lb) I'll stash it all in one Gallon Mylar with oxygen absorbers of course. How does 10kg of pitted Dates from Iran sound? Only $39.48 for that 22 lb of Dates. Sure beats $4 a lb at the store. Did you know that 1kg packs of instant Coconut Pie filling is only $6.99? I'm getting three or four of those suckers. Then there's the liquids, Red and White Wine Vinegars by the gallon, Worchestire sauce by the gallon, and I have already bought four gallon of their real chinese Soy Sauce. Lots of flavor, salt, and made without WHEAT! 3/4 gallon of Heinz Yellow Mustard fr $9.07. Not that cheap, but the stuff doesn't go bad either and can always be recanted into smaller jars. The killer is the 40lb of Instant Mashed Potatoes I paid $130 for two years ago and the last time I wanted some it was $173.00 but they were sold out, and now it's $210.00 for the 40 lb of pure instant Potatoes, (down from $215) and I want one of those too. My poor old Mum is off the Rice so if there's no fresh mashed Potatoes or Salad or something, it's the instant Mashed for her. My motto of "Be Screwed Now And Avoid The Post SHTF Rush" is paying off big time because I doubt I'll have a car post SHTF so why bother with one now? I know this is not doable for the vast majority, but for anyone already prepped up and sitting at their bug out/bug in location, ... it's the next logical step isn't it? Unless you want the bother of storing Fuel, Oil, and parts, just so you gave a ride if you want one. ME? I have nowhere to go post SHTF anyway. Why would I leave my preps unprotected? Keep up the great work and good luck.

Great video. I saw a few items I can add to my food car kit. Being in the Greater East Bay in Northern California, we get some temperature extremes. 100+ in the summer and near freezing in the winter. I keep my food in a insulated 12-can cooler. I always have a case of water in my car for work and have a gallon jug of water in a carry strap in case we need t abandon the vehicle. I use two cook systems, an Esbit stove and a twig stove. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next video.

Nice assortment, and good job including vitamins. I keep a little collapsible water kettle in the car. Takes up little space, and quickly boils water (nice option if you have an adaptor). I keep similar stuff in my "car kit". An assortment of easy grab and eat foods as well as food items that may tack some prep. I'm terrible at rotating food inside my house, but I do try to swap out my car food every few months. Power Crunch bars are so good. I use those more for snacking at home instead of a candy bar. For a more robust food source, I like the ProBar Meal On the Go bar. Dense calorically packed easy to eat "meal" and with good ingredients.
