I'm morbidly obese, and altho I've never been one to go the super casual jeans + t- shirt route, I do wish I could wear them occasinally. But they look awful. Fat women are forced to be hyper feminine.
@@whoareyoutoaccuseme have you looked for brands that specifically make plus sized clothing to your measurements? Rather than just larger clothes of the straight sized range. The proportions are always off! Like when designers seem to think all larger women also have big boobs!
Please do a second in the series. You just showed up in my search results. I'm so glad I found your work. Very well thought out and presented well. I would like to suggest more variety in sizes, age and body types in your examples. Overall a very good place to start with my research. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
I have had a much more eclectic style. I love vintage clothing, bohemian, a bit minimal as far as colors go, and a bit of classic. I was always feeling overwhelmed by how much clothing I had and constantly felt like I had nothing to wear. I read through The Curated Closet by Anuschka Rees and it's helped me to pin point what I like. I would say that my style is still a bit eclectic but I would say it's a lot more focused now after reading the book.
My style depends on what I am doing that day. I do like to look cool, put together & comfortable no matter what. I love my lace up ankle boots & white sneakers with just about everything. I have to wear flat shoes with orthotics as I have MS. Vintage clothes are my jam.Layers are a must due to the climate I live in.
Your style personality can depend on the setting as well. For work it’s one style, home one and out about can be multiple. As someone who is 62 it’s hard to find style inspiration for my age most styles tend towards sweet or over the top. I do take style inspiration from Emanuel Alt mixed with Caroline Bissette Kennedy with a dose of Lauren Bacall.
I don't understand why you only have 18k subscribers. In my opinion, you should have millions! Your channel is my new BFF...LOL. I am a 49-year-old mom of boys and trying to obtain a casual-chic, with a touch of sophisticated-retro, for year-round hot Miami weather. Its hard for me because I am pear-shaped (tiny on top and wider hips and thighs) and shy about my knees. LOVE midi length dresses and wide leg pants!
@@EmilyWheatley No worries. I knew you would want to know. You are very articulate and appear to choose you words well. I was wishing there was a way I could let you know privately so as not to "embarrass you! You also talked about what I think was intended to be "parameters" earlier in this video and used the word "perimeters" instead. Something I've done as well, which is why I caught it. You do an excellent job with your videos and I appreciate the smart way you approach fashion.
OMG get it right. When you said it I knew I am eclectic. I basically won’t put myself in a box and wear anything that I like regardless of what fashion type it is depending on each outfit
My style is classic with a touch of tomboy and casual and - particularly in the summer - a bit of boho. I love a boho top with jeans and flowy skirts in the summer. Great video!
@@EmilyWheatley Thank you for the very helpful video! This was far more helpful than videos with 10x the views. Hope your views rise according to the quality!
Eclectic is fun, I can easily incorporate thrift/consignment finds and never get bored. Trying to pair unexpected things together for contrast, shopping my own closet as well as my husband's 😂
So many of these that I connect to! My favorite is Avantgarde, but that is a style that is not easy to achieve in everyday life. so I think most of the time I end up dressing eclectic/contemporary and then sometimes my avantgarde heart comes out when I go out. Sprinkles of androgynous, boho, goth and streetwear are also coming to play for me. overall so many contrasting things that I like, I am very much a mood-dresser that loves very feminine colours and items but will always prefer a suit over a dress for occasions. so I would say eclectic probably describes this wild combo best...
I think it’s easier to have a basic style framework, i.e. classic, preppy, elegant, edgy, romantic or any of the other basic styles you mention) rather than being all over the place with different styles. I went for a more classic, simple style after 20 years of, mostly, California boho (contemporaneous with a three-size weight loss, I wouldn’t just throw out all my clothes for a style change), and it’s so much less complicated to shop and put outfits together.
I've been trying so hard to curate my wardrobe. But as a former fashion stylist, I can't wear the styles I prefer which express me, since I'm now morbidly obese (due to severe injury/disability later in life which means I can't walk or be active). I prefer a vintage gothic and Neo-Victorian style, like black 1940s thru 1970s dresses and boots. I can't fit into any of that now. So I'm forced to spend way too much time, constantly hunting for clothing I actually "like" or "don't mind", rather than "love" since it's nearly impossible to find anything in my size I'd wear. I now wear lots of midi & maxi skirts with a ruffled blouse and a blazer over, or a long black floaty dress. Its a bit too business and matronly but I don't know what else to do. I can only wear 1 pair of ugly ortho boots so that messes up my aesthetic.
I thought I'm more towards minimalist.. But now I know that when I go to work my style is actually categorised as sophisticated and when I go out, my style is more towards grunge style or sometimes just casual
my style is classy - vintage and eclectic. i pull from a bunch of different styles.I used to really like gothic and punk, but as i got older I realized what i really liked was the utilization of black and jewel tones. you don't see that much in mainstream fashion at the mall.
I have so many of these in my wardrobe! Minimalist, classic, casual, androgynous, tomboy, sporty, street wear. OH MY! Looks like I need to tame my personal style 😅 it’s so hard I appreciate all of these!
No you don't, I'll get into all that more with the Personal Style series. I'm the same, I pull from so many of these and think that's fine. Just have to learn how to balance, which I'll get into more.
This video was so helpful: I’d love a video abt styling edgy and chic for apple shaped bodies. I feel like my options are mostly dresses but I’d love to edge that up.
My sister is an apple and I always tell her high waisted bottoms are the best option. She got a pair of AGOLDE Riley jeans the other day and they look great because they add volume to her smaller hips. Then she paired with some black drapery tees and tanks with a relaxed tuck in waistline of jeans.
Sophisticated for sure. I dress up everyday. Always put together. Some days a Preppy twist With Lilly Pulitzer or J Crew. No Jeans or T shirts. Vintage Ralph Lauren British Style. Tweed, Wool, Plaid...which is hard because I live in Florida. I get so tired of hearing people ask why I'm dressed up :-) Dressed up to me is a Ball gown !!!
i like boho witchy skirts (think amy lee evanescence meets 90s whimsical textures) with grungey pieces or a classic top and cool jacket and necklace .if printed skirt a band tee is my go to
Great video! Video suggestion: brands that embody each of these style aesthethics, say Chanel with their classic vibe, Rick Owens and his avant-garde narrative or Ralph Lauren with the preppy air and so on...
Don’t forget LagenLook: very popular with the older sort Also the whole Witchy Stevie Nicks Goddesses. Lots of shawls, jewellery… (think possibly Eskandar, my WHY is this out of reach financially!?!) or the ScandiLook that can go either multicoloured or natural fibre & dyes… (think Gudrun or Oska)
Love your style and personality...came across your videos when looking for a review of the Nike AF1 Crater and love your work! This lip color looks great on you!
Have you read The Book of Looks by Lorraine Johnson? It illustrates 45 distinct and foundational styles that all fashion trends have borrowed from or built upon through the years. I still have my very tattered and much loved copy of this book from 1983 and love thumbing through it whenever I see a new trend to figure out which root style or combination was used to create it. Highly recommend the paperback version if you can locate a copy of it, but would avoid the earlier hardcover edition since there were printing issues with the pictures in some of them.
I guess I’m eclectic because I love going all out with lots of layers although I rarely wear prints. I’m an art teacher and love to play with style and love architectural elements in clothing. Sometimes I’ll wear all black but pair it with a great accessory or shoe like a red patent boot, textured tights and a cool necklace. I love wearing two dresses or a skirt under a dress. I would never do preppy or too classic. Love your style. It suits you!!! Xoxo
There is a style I seldom see mentioned called creative style. I could never find anything similar to my style until I heard of this. This may also be your style.💕
I have a friend who dresses this way also. She loves layers, texture and volume, but avoids anything classic, trendy, preppy and Boho. She is a huge fan of Japanese and Korean designers. I always thought it was eclectic meets avant garde, with a nod to arts & grafts (big statement jewellery).
Casual which is my current style which I want to Change into - 1) minimalist style 2) sophisticated 3) Goth 4) preppy ( clean classy casual) 5) Classic 6) dark aesthetic And the styles I liked little bit I want to keep 3-4 dress of them namely 1) contemporary 2) street wear 3) sporty 4) Retro 5) Grunge ( casual+street wear)
Depending on the day, I'm sophisticated/glam/old-money/40s Film-noir classic but can also be very 80s-Dallas/90s-SATC dramatic/eccentric/bold androgenous/edgy-futuristic.
If money and practicality would not matter, I would definitely go for avant-garde. But with being overweight, having to use public transportation, and, you know, just regular life happening, I guess I try to do a very creative version of contemporary - mostly expressed in tops and jewelry, like blazers and taking inspiration from Iris Apfel and Tzipporah Salomon. A black dress in either a classic cut or asymmetric goes a long way as a blank canvas, and is also great to mix in some more classic elements when desired.
Yes I agree with you Kat! I love avant-garde pieces but just most of the time way more pricey and not as practical. Love your style vibe though, still sound creative and fashion forward. Thanks so much for sharing your style with us!
I’m always trying to restrain my maximalist tendencies, I just want new clothes and accessories all the time! Setting a budget and having Do and Don’t Buy lists helps, as does saving for the real thing, i.e., a quality pair of leather boots, not three cheap fake pairs.
Definitely feel as though some of these categories could be combined, for instance, sporty/casual, and preppy can fit into a more casual classic styling. Looking at the photo examples, some look quite alike!
Emily where would dark academia fall at? I am a dark winter, I like the preppy styles like pleated pants, jeans, and the80's type of preppy I love the big over sized preppy glasses of the 80's that make you look smart. But I also love denim, velvet and leather. I loved the harem pants that had pleats in the front and tied at the ankles. I wore this with high heels and a v neck sweater. Or preppy shoes. I also like the look of dark academia. With the big preppy looking glasses, plaid skirts, and boots I love boots. So where do I fall in at? Because I'm not working right now I'm usually in sweats and a t shirt but when I go out to run errands I pull my long hair into a pony tail, and I'm either wearing tennis shoes like new balance burgundy tennis shoes and a dark gray tee with either linen shorts, pants or sweat shorts. How do I fit this together to get the look that I'm comfortable with and look great in. I want to be a little more sexy or sensual with out showing alot if skin.
Thank you so much for this video!!! I haven't been able to figure out what I like until this video. Turns out I'm streetstyle and I had never even heard of it!! Now I know what to look for - this really helped me so thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰
I'm a sophisticated, classic bohemian. Does that make sense? I like different styles for different occasions. At my most basic, yup, jeans and a top. I always prefer a feminine aesthetic.
Cool blog I just discovered. I would have loved to have seen more examples though. Adore Julie Sarinana's style. Curious to know what style/s you would classify this as.
I'm seeing this video almost a year later but it's great!! I am absolutely classic/minimalist. I've been catching up on all the videos and really enjoying them and learning a lot. Thank you from a new subscriber.
My style is what I would call “Well Put Together.” I know my body type, my vertical body proportions, my most flattering colors, & how to shop for & combine clothes to suit ME. All of my clothing is comfortable to fit my retirement lifestyle on the beach in a tropical climate, though I have kept 2 classic sheath dresses for events that call for them (funerals, for example). My color palette is warm & spicy.
Not sure how it happened for me, but I seem to be : Sophisticated Androgynous Sporty Classic, slowly converting to Sophisticated Classic Retro Casual as I get older. But I sew most of my stuff, so I like to mix things up within a single pattern. Nothing is “as it’s designed”- I change several things as I go.
Oh I love that! Love that you get to recreate pieces to just how you want them. Elevates your style game big time. Thank you so much for sharing Marie!
I’m not sure what my style is as the last 30 years I lived in scrubs as an ER RN but now I’m retired. I don’t feel as if I’ve landed in one camp or the other ones. On my days off I was hiking relaxing road trips. So at 69 I want to explore styles like dress up when we were kids! Like ur videos.
I bought an eclectic dress in black that I loved, but I was with the minimalist mindset, I did not have anywhere to go to with this dress and I gave it away. I am still missing the dress😢. Next time I will take a picture.
Hey Emily, great video! I definitely fall into a few different categories and it was good to learn about others. Very much looking forward to more videos in this series. As always, thanks for sharing. Btw, Love your outfit, very boyish chic kinda vibe - love it xx
