How long have you gone without a smartphone? Hours? Days? Weeks? Years?

Huge respect for your 17 years of abstinence! I think have managed only a couple of days without my phone. For me the bigger problem currently is spending too much time online in general on my laptop. I should come up with some digital fast this Lent.

I've never had one but I'm in my 60s. They never appealed to me but my wife likes me to take a dumb phone if I'm out but I never use it. I was amazed at seeing all the adverts when a friend showed me so, No - I just don't want one. I get through a lot of spiritual books and art books and I draw and paint. My laptop is enough tech for me.

I think this is a very good incentive. I have had a smart phone for several years, it is a company phone, but I am sure I don't know how to use it properly! Probably the longest has been 6/7 days when I go for my annual silence retreat. So I turned it off during the day and on in the evening to send a message to my husband that say I am ok. Less is best.

I'm in "recovery" about 4 years. Never carry my phone unless I absolutely have to. I find the laptop a pleasure to use. I don't feel any addiction to it and similar to you I've got an nice size library that sometimes I like to just rest my eyes on. Thanks for the reminder.

That is impressive that you have managed without a smartphone. I resisted getting one up until around 2012. I try very hard not to be too dependent on it. I have installed very few apps and I really don't look at it much unless I need to send a text, use navigation, or look something up quickly. I also keep lists on it like shopping lists. I like your strategy of using computers instead of reading articles or watching videos on the phone. I do use a browser that blocks all ads. For lent last year I gave up Instagram, and I am still not using it. I discovered that the ads were a real issue in getting me to consider buying things that I didn't really need, and there is just too much on it that drives you into not being happy with your life. I think this lent I could try to use my smartphone even less. I had been thinking about giving up podcasts, I listen to several of them while doing housework. Wondering what will happen if I can manage to do that in total silence.

That's really good that you managed to avoid ads. Notetaking on a phone is good. I find that a tablet works better. Or a laptop which is less portable. Sometimes it is better to do things differently. Like listening to podcasts with a different device. But I get it, why not a phone. After all that's basically what these smartphones were in the early days - a dumb phone + mp3 player

Great message! But I don’t understand how you can be more focused. Since you never used a smartphone how would you know that you focus better without it?

Where I live I take the metro and probably ninety per cent or more of people are completely focussed….on their phones, and oblivious to their surroundings. I see it everywhere, I call it handphones zombification.

I bought a Light Phone which looks like a little kindle but I used it for a month and I'm trying to figure out how to use that phone full time. It was the most freeing time for me becuase it started the cogs in my brain again since I can't even remember. I have gone back to my smartphone but I've put a lot of guard rails up with using it but I plan to use a dumb phone full time.
