This is how a late 18th century siege is supposed to be portrayed, excellent use of trenches and and artillery by the French, the woodland Indian ambush on the British column reminds me of the fate most of General Edward Braddock's army in 1755
Likewise the French soldiers in America were in vast majority composed of civilians settlers and it's still 5 times more. And about the Indians don't forget that by explicit orders of the king, the French were not allowed to distribute rifle to their indians allies. As you can guess it made a big difference.
In most battles of the war the British with their Indian allies outnumbered the French and their Indian allies. Sometimes British side was fighting at 10 to 1 or even more (Battle of Ticonderoga British outnumbered the French from 28 to 1 or the Battle of the Thousand Islands where British outnumbered the French from 39 to 1).
solwen i don't know chere you see that the indian have not rifle during the french indianwar, of course they have rifle. Learn you're history before to talk ty
Aymeric Gueguen Thanks but i know my history very well : The king forbid the wide distribution of rifles to our native allies in the fear that these weapons would be used during an insurrection while the Brits gave weapons to everyone and their grandmothers (a thing that would cost them dearly later). But it doesn't mean that the local commanders never gave them weapons, or that the Indians themselves did not buy/loot/build some, especialy considering the very close relation of the Indians with the French settlers. TL;DR Of course they had rifles, but not to the same extent as the english allies.
I do not think too many people realize what a long and bloody conflict the French Indian War was. It could be argued that it truly was the first world war in that it was fought on global scale. It was fought in Europe, Africa, the Pacific, Indian ocean and the Atlantic. It was a conflict that almost bankrupted both nations. It was a war that could not be matched in terms of the brutality that was displayed by both sides, especially the native American tribes that were enlisted by both the British and the French.
The Iroquois style of warfare is important here, because half a century later the Americans used this to crush the redcoats in the war of independence an they learned it from natives ( while the British learned little)
csabatibor unfortunately the redcoats were crushed but simply because the french assisted in the Atlantic by slowing the reinforcements from Britain, throw in the fact parliament and the general uk people didn’t really want the war as were already at war with multiple countries including France, I’d say Britain as small as it is really did put the fear into the states for eternity
there is a game called (Empire Total War) that is set on that period where you are in command of an empire with realistic battles; EMPIRE TOTAL WAR, look it up!
The additional battle scenes were not in the film,s original release because Michael Mann felt they made the film too long for the theatre. When the director,s cut was released , the deleted scenes were put back in. A good thing. No expense was spared for this film, and is awesome in it,s detail and authenticity. One of the best period pieces ever.
It really was. The Seven Years War was technically the first World War, in that it had major conflicts across the globe. The French and Indian War not only helped seed the foundations of Canada with the defeat of the French at Abraham, but also laid the groundwork for the American Revolution. Many of the troops fighting in the Revolution were veterans of the Seven Years War, and the fighting was one of the factors that affected the growing tension between the 13 colonies and mainland England.
Well for the past 100 years they have been cowards. In world war 1 they barely managed to hold the Germans and in world war 2 within a couple of weeks they got squashed by the Germans.
ryan jansen In WWII they had outdated tech, battle plans, etc...but funny enough even HITLER admitted that had France attacked in1935-6...theyd have beaten Germany's fledgling wehrmacht
***** Verdun wasn't a fluke, your an idiot If the French collapsed like you said they did Germans would have won, no way could the British hold them by their selves they didn't have the manpower. The French held more of the western front than the British, so its no surprise they suffered more casualties ... almost a million more. Are you seriously making the case that the French just broke and collapsed during WW1? No real historian would agree with your madness, I am guessing I am dealing with a biased butthurt Brit or an ignorant American.
The french monarchy abandoned their colony in north america, the French canadian of New France fight alone the british (70 000 french population in north america against 180000 british) so gg for french canadian for their resistance
you can find the fort location on Google Earth it in Lake James North Carolina 35 47'35.70"N 81 52'08.79"W. Unfortunately the fort itself is no longer there.
Saw this in 1992 when it came out on the big screen. People was so overwhelmed at this scene they screamed. I was terrified of Magua. Wes Studi was good in Heat (1996) too.
Thanks a lot for sharing, I don't think I've seen these scenes before! I also wanted to ask, I noticed that at 0.34 a French soldier covers the cannon and after a while, at 0.45, he uncovers it. Does anyone know why? I found it interesting.
@@pitsinokaki im late, like very late for the response but no it wasn for the cool down but being in active "shootoot" you have to be very carreful of any spark while loading the canon so you cover it to avoid spark
The Seven Years War - known in the Americas as the French and Indian war - was a resounding victory for Britain, bankrupting France and contributed to the Revolution in that country while simultaneously stripping France of most of her holdings in the New World. In other words: Rule Britannia.
@@marsnz1002 As in every other war with the French, we have kicked their arse - thats why they have a complex about us. Nothing finer than Nelsons heroics at Trafalgar. Britannia ruled the waves for the next 100 years.
@@podsmpsg1 The British Army did learn to fight in the wilderness, they had been fighting in Canada for 50 years or so. They suffered however, as did all European armies, from cases of poor leadership; mainly from officers whom had bought commissions in the army, and others who were just morons. They were generally outnumbered by good officers from the ranks and visionary leaders like Thomas Gage, George Howe and James Wolfe, but it only takes one spark to start a fire.
There is also a mod for the game Mount and Blade: Warband. Called Mount and Musket, its a very well played mod where you have linebattles and be part of a regiment (1st person)
@desbienscharles The 35th regiment had only 27 deads from the beggining of the battle till reaching fort Edward. There weren't 2000 redcoats, most of them were militiamen, with the 35th regiment, parts of the 60th regiment and other units, but regulars were under a thousand. Militiamen had heavvy losses during the march to fort Edward
I saw this in 1992 when it came out on the big screen. People in the cinema were so overwhelmed at this scene they screamed. I was only 9...now that was an impression! Was also terrified by Magua. Hm, Wes Studi, what an actor. Saw him in Heat (1996) too.
I don't really know about the first one, but the War of Austrian Succession saw land battles in Europe, North America and Asia, the French Revolutionary Wars saw land battles in Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America, and the Napoleonic Wars saw land battles in Europe, North America and South America.
Any way thats not the first world war. By that logic there are seven world wars, by chronological order: War of the Spanish succession, War of the Austrian succession, Seven Years War, French Revolutionary Wars, Napoleonic Wars, WW1, WW2
Unfortunately, after this decisive victory, the French did not push their advantage and decided to regroup in Quebec while the road to New York was wide opened. History may have been changed Montcalm had decided to march South instead of consolidating Northern positions…
@omltherunner My bad I meant the area they used to build a replica for the movie was in North Carolina to look like it was in the wilderness compared to the actual fort in upstate New York that has roads and other building of today.
was it portrayed that way in the novel? This film is apparently an adaptation of the previous 1936 film, rather than a direct adaptation of the source material.
Actually, the French forces plus their native allies reached up to 8,000 men in the battle. The Fort, defended by 2,000 red coats could not hold it when the French brang their mortars. They surrended and what was left of the British forces were massacred by the Natives.
I had the same question and was eventually told, in a guided tour of the Fort Sint Pieter in Maastricht, that this rag was soaked in water and that they would do this to cool down the cannon.
Empire and Napoleon could not perfect the realism of the warfare though, and i think if they gonna make Empire 2 in the future, they ought to follow this scene and make more new features, like digging trenches, making tunnels, fortifying a defensive perimeter outside the besieged fort, and break the formation that exists in native Americans faction (it looks stupid).
@GillsFan91 you won't kill many man in a first person game on this time period... it will be boring for standard gamer...casualties in those war were more due to groups action (deadly musket volley) than single heroism. For this kind of war, I think the total war series is the best, but who knows, maybe one day they will follow your idea, could be interesting for those who love the period...
it all started with skirmishes with American settlers moving westwards expanding to live in land that was landlord free and French settlers in that part of colonial North America. first settlement by the British - Jamestown, VA in 1607, the Spanish - St. Augustine, FL in 1565. the beginnings of America my nation. both governments forgot the land was owned by the Native Americans. they were there 1ST ! the Spanish was a different story in Florida, later Louisiana Territory ( Spain then France ).
@coonquistadoreddie Yes i know i play it all the time i was talking about a first person shooter, kind of like darkest of days but without the time travel or the futuristic weapons. Im sorry i should have been more clear in my first comment.
The french and indian war was part of the seven years war. But a lot of then colonies call it from their theatre. So really, the seven years war is the real name.
Riley Larcombe "The Seven Years' War took place between 1754 and 1763 [snip] In the historiography of some countries, the war is alternatively named after combatants in its respective theatres: the French and Indian war in the United States as well as among many English-speaking Canadians."
