Crusader Armies came based on a cnturies old irrendentist mission, and then when they conquered they massacred everyone including Jewish, Muslim and even Christian civilians who were not Catholic. It’s not anti-Christian, it’s anti-atrocities.

I think in western culture and media, the crusades and colonialism are very much blended into one another, to create this appalling view of events, that Europeans have always been blood thirsty, racist group of people, that only seek to conquer. Which is very much not the case, since most of European history is actually about national stability.

By taking the 'Holy Land' back from the Muslims most Islamic military effort was focused on regaining it rather than attacking Christendom around the Mediterranean or through the Balkans. The almost 200 years gained (1099-1291) was crucial in enabling Europe to survive.
