Whether or not he was the first to sing this song, I applaud his performance, so rich and meaningful. My only regret is to not have heard his rendition live. BRAVO!!!

I was young and numb during the whole Bicentennial period and did not fully appreciate "1776" and several of its songs until later, when I had partially erased (some) of my 1967-68 Viet Nam memories. This song, especially, brings tears.

I would add I have searched this on YT before, but THIS is the most moving version, for me.

@@A_Nony_Mouse I agree Mr. Smith. Such a rich example of a voice explaining, in a simple way of what costs are incurred fighting for what is right.

He was the first. He was in the original National Theatre cast and sang it at the White House before the Broadway run.

Via youtube mechanics i gave you a simple "like" in the past. Just undid it to do a better Reply. The USA has been in many wars, but none on our soil since 1865. We can only imagine how Ukranian "Mamas" must feel. Losing a loved one to politicians' wars is horrible. Finding them must be worse. "1776" was Broadway at its best.

@@A_Nony_Mouse I can't even imagine the pain. It goes the same for the Russian mothers who have been fed so many lies by putin The don't realize this war is based on deception. I fear, at this rate, we will have another civil war here. This song will be playing again. War is hell.

@@saradecapua3264 , based only on my parents' ages at their deaths, I have "good genes" and may make it to 90. I hate to think of the self-inflicted horrors Man-Unkind will let me see b4 I'm gone. I prefer the company of other species ......

@@A_Nony_Mouse It's sad to have to agree with you on this. My ancestors came here on the Mayflower and John Adams is my 8X uncle. To think what they would be thinking seeing the chaos of today Very sad . Animals are easier to cope with than some of the people I come across today.

Such a sad loss at a relatively young age. Damn the Reagan administration for mishandling AIDS, damn them all to hell.

@shawn mulligan. Yes. Such a sad loss. Didn’t know him too much outside family gatherings. I was a lot younger than him. My dad was one of the youngest and he had me at a late age. His brother was named after my dad. Anyway, my cousin got sober and was very active in the 12 step program. He helped a lot of people. I’m proud of that. ❤️

I'll never forget that Tony Awards broadcast because of that song. All the other nominated shows did huge splashy group numbers, and here was this one guy. This song resonated so strongly because the Viet Nam war was in full force, and I was 20, so I knew classmates who were over there.

It is pretty strong!! I just saw the production at American Repertory Theatre last night and the song still packs a punch. Hair (one of the other nominees) wasn’t a splashy number. Like Momma Look Sharp, The Three-Five-Zero-zero/ Let the sunshine in medley that looked at the horrors of Vietnam through the eyes of young Americans who opposed the war. I think the past (1776) and present (Hair) collided to bring the horrors of war to the stage.

I am Parris Island, Class of 66, I Corps, 1967-68. THIS song resonates for me MUCH more than all the "Woodstockish" ones from top 40 music charts, although I dig them too.

(I agree that the "Hair" number wasn't splashy-- I just meant that it had a lot of people. "Hair" certainly resonated with our generation re Viet Nam. I will forever be grateful that those two shows were on Broadway at the same time so I could see them.)

Wow! What a blessed audience to hear this song live. Bless every mother’s son and daughter whose mother went looking for them in the tall grass nearby. We have freedom and liberty and the right to protest our beautiful Land because of them. Our rights, our privileges, liberties and freedoms all come from and are gifts freely given to All by Almighty God Himself. Please let us never forgot the costs and price paid by every mothers’ sons and daughters. The sacrifices made.
