WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

Growing up in Alabama I have over the years found about 6 or 8 points made of quartz. Every single one was rounded off. I found out they were not arrow heads but atlatl points from between 2 to 4 thousand years. We used to find all kinds of points. Great channel, I used to do a little napping been so long.

I've got to say that's one of the finest crystal points I've ever seen created. I'm suffering through some electric blue from the Davis Creek. I'm going to send you some of that sometime. I've never seen you work any. It's the worst stone ever because it has bands of stunning color that are never situated advantageous like. Most of the time the blue ends up in the bucket and we end up with a clear point. Unless you slab it.. but that's not really knapping.

Piece of advice? Wear an apron or use a piece of buckskin across your knee/upper leg to keep those tiny flakes and the stone dust from working through your cloths and ending up in your skin and the washing machine and all your other cloths! That stone dust can really embed itself into ones pores if you're not lucky!

I've quite a bit of quartz on my property, Some veins I can break off in Football size chunks, but most of it is the milky white quartz, some is clear. I'm fully crippled now but I can see if my sons have time to poke around this spring once the snow clears, We still have at least two feet of snow but it's hitting the low 30's now so it won't be too long!

Quartz is piezoelectric. I'll bet if it had been possible to knap that in the dark, anyone watching would have seen little flashes of light every time you popped a flake off lol. That would've been considered magic back then 😊

Yeah, quartz is weird to work with because it has that crystal lattice that is not at all like ordinary rock grain and definitely not like glass. Those ripples you mentioned are known as spiral or conchoidal fracture, where the lattice structure kind of grabs the applied force and won’t let it break cleanly unless it’s at just the right angle. I got interested in knapping while watching a Navajo guy knapp pieces of old bottle glass at a kind of powwow at Indian School Park in Phoenix Arizona. I asked him about quartz and he shook his head and laughed, and said I should give it a try. I never did near as well as you did. More practice maybe?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 2 месяца назад
Yeah, it usually boils down to practice.
