The Road is an absolutely disturbing novel. Every silly prepper with fantasies about some shtf should watch it and realize it's closer to how things would actually be for survivors.
@@truckercarlson9081 Cormac McCarthy wrote about an activity in "The Road" that is literally too disturbing to ever be legally filmed. If a director even hinted at this activity, no movie, no more directing. He'd be run out of Hollywood. And yes he is a HE. No women would ever even think of such an atrocity.
I'm a fan of Tubi as well, but yeah it's a swamp of throw away movies that you have to wade through ball$ deep to find the gems. I for one TRULY appreciate you finding those for us!!
Yep, 12 Angry Men is one of my favorite films ever and Philip Seymour Hoffman is my all time favorite actor, so the fact that I still haven't seen this film is a crime. I've been wanting to watch it forever
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is easily one of my favorite films of all time. What a screenplay and the acting is superb. And then you have 90-year old Lumet directing, making this film look and feel like it was directed by a director in his 30s, as much energy it is directed with. It’s a must see IMO.
@@rickbrenner6079 I'm ashamed to say that 12 Angry Men is the only Lumet film I've seen. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead looks so great. Philip Seymour Hoffman is my favorite actor of all time
I read the road about a year after my dad passed. It was extremely hard and I will never read it again even though it was of the most impactful stories of paternal love I’ve ever read. I’m tearing up now in writing this.
if you like these movies in which stupid people carry out heists, kidnappings etc gone absolutely wrong you cant go wrong checking out 1998's a simple plan a kind of gold standard when it comes to comparing movies on this subgenre .. and you could also give these others a shot if you so consider it. gang related 1996 , route 9 1998, ladykillers 2004 off the top of my head
Before the Devil knows your dead is such a banger dude. The crazy thing is I never hear people talk about it which is unfortunate because it' has so many great actors in it and yeah dude Marissa is a bombshell I've been in love with her since the first time I saw my cousin Vinny. I never thought I'd be jealous of a guy ..... especially a guy as short as Joe Pesci lol but man I man she is absolutely stunning regardless. Also Philip Seymour Hoffman is hands down one of my favorite actors it's so unfortunate that after all those years of sobriety he picked back up again but addiction is terrible and very cunning. People sleep on him but I've seen thousands of movies and I'm a fan of acting in general. He really knows what he's doing and I guess I just like his style and the way he gets so consumed in the rolls he takes on it's truly amazing how talented he is and I think he doesn't get the due credit he deserves he's very underated and not widely known other than for his really big roles but he's very respected on the east coast especially in the theater scene. Thanks again for soo many great recommendations buddy I really appreciate it . I tell people about your channel all the time . Namaste -
If you liked Red Hill, check out Mystery Road. Bone Tomahawk is a classic. *That* scene... I didn't remember it correctly at all because of all the talk around it. I recently rented it and had been expecting something much different. It's still squirm-induicing. McQueen makes beautiful-looking films, even if all his movies are all meant to make you think (Shame, 12 Years a Slave). He doesn't do cuddly. But he found the best cinematographer for his vision, and I think his movies are worth it for that. Lots of really good movies on here. It took me a while but I realized I like some more neo Westerns, or at least Westerns that fit in a very specific niche.
I LOVE post-apocalyptic movies and The Road is probably one of the best ones out there, as far as I know. It's been forever since I read the book, but I remember having to look away from the book during one sequence cause it creeped me out so much. I would love to find more movies as good as The Road. Too many Post-apocalyptic movies and shows are just good looking people trying to survive and dealing with relationships. Ain't nobody got time for shower, shave, haircut, and make up at the end of the world!!
Fun fact. During filming, Viggo Mortenson was kicked out of some place bc they thought he was a homeless person. (I don't remember the place but it's in the trivia on IMDB for The Road)
These are all I've seen 13. Goldstone - This is good. 11. Kill the Irishman -- this is OK - to Good 7. Dredd - thisis a fun movie to watch 2. Wind River - this is really good .
Great to see Goldstone feature on your list, but before watching that people should try to watch Mystery Road, (Goldstone is its sequel). It also stars the excellent Aaron Pedersen with True Blood's Ryan Kwanten and The Matrix's Hugo Weaving and features an impressively realistic final shootout.
It's been several years back when I watched "The Road" on HBO or Showtime. I never heard of this movie and I pushed info on remote. Im glad I didn't skip to watch something else. Really good movie. I was hooked from the start to the end.
"Bone Tomahawk" The only movie (so far) where I had to look away from the screen. Don't get me wrong, it's a good grunge western, but there's this one scene... "Wind River" and "Dredd" however, are superb choices.
This dude seems to have a running theme of calling movies that are very common, unknown. The Cove is one of the most well-known documentaries ever. If you like messed up movies or movies from Japan outside of Godzilla, you've most likely heard of Audition, it's pretty widely known. Bone Tomahawk just came out a few years ago and was marketed to death. And if your fan of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Before the Devil knows you're Dead was one of the biggest movies he ever did. Dreadd is not a "little known movie", it was also a major Hollywood release. I'm shocked he didn't try to say The Road was some obscure movie that no one's ever heard of.
I think what hes saying is these movies did not get the audience he thinks they deserve, and in all cases he is correct...and Id never heard of the cove.
Kill the Irishman is amazing and a true story to boot! I saw a documentary and they literally used scenes from his real life in the flick. He was legit a badass who thumbed his nose at the mafia… crazy times in 70s Cleveland. Watch it for sure
THE INVITATION is soooooooooo damn good! you watch it once and forever you want to show the movie to friends, family, dates, whomever will watch it with you just to see their reactions of how awesome this film is !!!!!! I'm almost sorry I ever saw it cause I wanna watch it fresh as if I've never seen it. it's THAT GOOD !!!!!
I've seen many on your list and your recommendations are always on point. Keep it up. I love Tubi even though I subscribe to all the usual paid services, Tubi amazed me with their selection of movies that I often times will not see elsewhere and worth going thru some commercials for its content.
It is not really a messed up movie but if you liked The Invitation you might check out Coherence if you haven't seen it. I always want to watch them together fir some reason.
First of all, I LOVE The Road. It's my favorite book and movie of all time. I have it on kindle and a hard copy as well. Anyway, whenever I see one of these videos from you, I always start a list in my phone to keep track of what seems good. This is probably the biggest list I've made yet from your suggestions. Of all the movies you listed, there are only 5 I didn't list. The road, bc I own it, a couple (like audition) bc I've seen it) and a couple that just didn't sound like me. Great list!! Thank you for sifting thru Tubi for us. Great stuff! Keep up the good work!!
Dredd is very unrelated but not just for the story but for it’s cinematography, it’s such a gorgeous film visually. I love stalones original and when i saw this, loved it
When adding Audition to my que, I noticed a truly F’d up gem in Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs. So difficult to watch, but man the progression to the end was mind binding. Thanks again DVD for another great list of recommendations.
Tubi has some of the best hard to find/indie movies out there. No matter my mood Tubi has the flick to fit. Every horror sub genre. Creepy, gory, spooky, thought provoking, silly, foreign, you name it you'll find it. Then there's all the wonderful classics. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, spaghetti Westerns, and musicals. I'll put up with a few ads just so I can watch a film that I haven't seen ,which is hard to accomplish or something I haven't seen in a long time. Thanks for doing this list but as usual I've seen most of your picks no matter the list. With the exception of action films you and I have the same understanding and appreciation of cinema. Thanks for your smart and intuitive contributions with your RU-vid channel.
I watched Mandy because of you and OMG!!! I was just about to turn it off-the first 57 mins were so sssllloooowww but once it ignites it BLOWS UP!!!! It’s now one of my all time favorite movies!!!! I’m obsessed and LOVED it!! To me Nicholas Cage is a hit or miss but in Mandy….HE HITS HARD!!!!! He’s so good!! The scene of him after what happens and he’s in the bathroom made me cry!! Omg it tugged my heart!!! And then when he goes to visit his friend and he yells about what happened…OMG!! The emotion he displays is incredible!!!
I have to agree, The Road will rub you raw to the bone. There’s the tiniest bit of redemption that you can use as a salve for your Thr Road rash … but not quite enough. Thank you for putting this list together,
Good list. My only disagreement is that I think Wind River is eminently rewatchable. Though sexual assault is central to the plot, it is artfully handled and not at all exploitative. I have and will continue to rewatch this superb film.
I have watched it multiple times, it is easily in my top 10 right now. The lead in to the shootout felt like some of the best cinema I have seen up to this point.
I’ve seen Wind River three times and I will likely watch it many more, it’s just that great a movie. I personally didn’t find the SA scene triggering - I think because I had suspected that was what had happened to her, but obviously it is never something someone wants to see. The Invitation is also a must see - solid movie with great acting and build up of suspense as you said. I am adding Bone Tomahawk, Arizona, & Cold in July to my que based on your review.
Wind River is one of my favorite movies. I guess I get why it's on this list, but I for one, don't think it deserves it. I originally watched it because Graham Greene is in it. But I became a fan of Taylor Sheridan, by watching it.
Hi. Can you or anyone here help me with a movie? I think it's similar to hobo with a shotgun but in the end the main character is tied to a chair being tortured. He purposely let's his right arm get destroyed by a hammer and than he rips his hand off and uses his compound fracture to stab the bad guy to death with his arm bones? I can't remember the movie. Thanks
the thing with Dredd is it was filmed in 3d. the whole idea of the drug they were working against was that it would slow your perception of time down drastically, so it naturally worked well with bullet time filming. the colors and depth of that film are just mind blowing. watch it on your quest2 if you get a chance. i own it and watch it every now and then just to gasp at it. the female cop, olivia thirlby, is really hot. the actor playing dredd, karl urban, having to be stallone while not really looking like him, keeps his helmet on, and is a perfect match. lena headly is more intense here than on game of thrones, if you can imagine that. really, i can't say enough about that film.
Thank you for exploring Tubi’s offerings for a change, very refreshing. I noted most of them to check out for my weekly movie night, but will skip the ones you labeled “hard to watch” - so thanks for the warning. Although I subscribe/watch your vids, they skew more toward action, explosions, and car chases than I am normally drawn to (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) I always find several to check out. Thanks for your “hidden gems”, as well as this one on a free app.
Thanks for the suggestions, Tubi is absolutely awesome. My taste ranges from horror, crime drama, etc. and I love crap movies, and believe me Tubi has then all, the good, the bad and the ugly. Time to go check out me some Tubi. Excellent video and I look forward to more content.
It needs to be clarified that, when they say "Irish prison" to describe the circumstances in "Hunger" it's not an Irish prison, it's an English-settler prison that's part of the settler apparatus, in "Northern Ireland" which is the English settler colony occupying part of Ireland. It's an English prison.
Darren, you are one of the best! You review for those of us who never went to NYU Film School and are just looking for great movies to enhance the gaps in our day to day lives!
Great list, and the top three are spot on. The Invitation is quite unknown to most people, but everyone I have coerced into watching it is stunned at how amazing it is, with one of the great closing scenes...
If you wait till the ad timer countdown gets to 1 and press the 30 sec back button the wait 1 sec and hit the 30 sec fwd button you can successfully skip the ads without missing anything.
I've seen enough of the movies you recommend to trust you on the others - though I won't be watching "The Cove." "The Road" is painfully bleak, but "Cold in July" is a must. Thank you.
Love the choices on Tubi...absolutely hate the commercials. Any commercial for any length of time is annoying. There is no other option with Tubi except watch mindless ads at inopportune times.
@@zulemazahir666 Oh yeah - The Wailing is amazing as well - one of the few films where I felt as anxious and confused as the characters. I fell asleep the first 2x I tried to watch it, but that was cause I was too tired to read subtitles. But, wow, it's an absolute ride once it gets going. Hope you enjoy them both! Happy watching!
Man, you are spot on about The Road as well. I've seen it 3 times. Hard to watch, but excellent. I turned it off trying to watch it in LA during the lockdown. Too depressing but caught it a third time after moving to Vegas to a less destroyed major city that is far cheaper and had far less things closed down. And, I was able to watch The Road. Tremendous film. Great srkection, again
I have to appreciate your enthusiasm when giving your short but impactful descriptions of these movies, shows your authentic review. Keep up the good work, love seeing it, and hope to see continued movie reviews and on various platforms, especially those that aren't locked behind a subscription.
Out of the three, Bone Tomahawk, Dragged Across Concrete, and Brawl on Cell Block 99, personally I find Cell Block 99 to be the absolute head and shoulders above the rest best of the 3. It's now my favorite Vince Vaughn movie and probably in my top 50 or even top 20 movies and I've seen hundreds if not thousands of movies over the years.
Well , I think this list reads like a cautionary tale all round , ie; if we keep ,( or am I just taking it all a bit to seriously) treating one another like (Wind River) (The Road) is going to become our reality so while some of this stuff is hard to stomach , it could read as awake up call Now 'scuse me while I go an' watch some of them , ps; The Aggression Scale , not the most fucked up one but !.
1) Big up for mentioning Radius! 2) Remember the word "most"? It's like "more" but, yknow, "more". I know erasing "most" and "best" from existence is currently USA fashionable, but in reality, people can handle "more" and "most" coexisting as concepts......p.s : That's not how understated humour works.
