Tissue conditioners all have limited lifespans that vary from material to material, but generally 4-6 weeks is typical. Sometimes they will last longer depending on patient hygiene, liner integrity and polish of the surface.

These liners are not designed or intended for long term use. They are useful to improve fit while tissues heal (as in after an extraction, or if the soft tissues are inflamed), to temporarily improve fit and comfort of a denture while a new one is made, etc. They can last longer if they are polished and properly maintained (cleaned without bleach, etc), but they can also deteriorate quickly if not kept clean. There are other processed resilient liners that can be used for longer lifespan if that is desired.

A temporary liner can be used to improve fit, comfort and the health of gum tissues. Normally they are used prior to making a new denture when the tissues are not healthy or after extractions when there is to be immediately subsequent placement of dentures. In the latter case, the liner helps compensate for shrinkage and improve comfort as the bone and gums reshape.

Normally a resilient liner is used to improve the fit of a poorly adapting denture base. The thickness of the liner is minimal and supported by the rigid base, so that there is minimal polymerization shrinkage, As such a posterior palatal seal is not needed (see my video on 'The Maxillary Posterior Denture Border and the Posterior Palatal Seal' ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hUeBfxaoLQE.html for more details). In addition these materials are viscoelastic and tend to continue to mold as they are worn, so even if there had been significant shrinkage, they continue to adapt.
