Our garden is in Denmark. We'll pronounce the flowers in Danish with scientific names provided in the video.
In this video, we'll showcase 18 of our favorite perennials that not only beautify your garden but also multiply on their own, saving you money and effort. We'll show how we incorporate these self-seeding flowering perennials into our Danish cottage garden for continuous blooming year after year without spending a fortune.
We'll take you on a tour of our garden, featuring the following self-seeding perennials:
0:00 Our garden in DENMARK
0:26 Aquilegia (Columbine)
0:41 Digitalis (Foxglove)
1:07 Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Woodland Sage)
1:21 Brunnera macrophylla (Siberian Bugloss)
1:37 Silene dioica (Red Campion)
2:41 Phlomis (Jerusalem Sage)
3:13 Centaurea montana (Mountain Cornflower)
3:30 Centranthus (Red Valerian)
4:20 Astrantia (Masterwort)
5:13 Echinacea (Coneflower)
5:30 Alchemilla mollis (Lady's Mantle)
5:52 Linaria (Toadflax)
6:13 Lavandula angustifolia 'Thumbelina' (English Lavender)
7:06 Viscaria vulgaris (Sticky Catchfly)
7:32 Thalictrum aquilegifolium 'Black Stockings' (Meadow Rue)
8:18 Phuopsis stylosa (Caucasian Crosswort)
8:41 Achillea millefolium 'Milly Rock Rose' (Yarrow)
9:37 Eryngium (Sea Holly)
From our garden in Denmark (Zone 8a), we'll share tips on how to encourage these plants to self-seed, ensuring a lush cottage garden without breaking the bank. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or looking for plants that will multiply on their own, we hope this video hits the spot.

I bought some Aquilegia about twenty years ago and it's thrown its seeds all around my garden every year which I love. The plants look better where they've decided to grow rather than where I put them. Had a range of colours from them over the years. Your garden is looking way ahead of mine. Not garden related, but I still have an ornament of the little mermaid sitting on a rock which my dad bought me when he was in Copenhagen. He said Denmark was very nice and he enjoyed his time there when he went with The Royal Navy way back in 1968. He is 91 now and still manages his own garden, cutting the grass and weeding the borders.

We agree about Aquilegia - they always look better (and happier!) growing where they want. And how great that you still have that little mermaid souvenir! It’s an icon of Denmark - one of the great stories by HC Andersen. I’m sure Copenhagen changed a lot since then, but hopefully it’s just as nice as he remembers 🥰

Lovely garden. Keep the mandstro! The blue color is amazing. I am a little overwhelmed at how my rosenskovmærke has grown so large and spread nicely. It's huge. @perennial-garden your garden is truly lovely. Ot is such a busy time of the year, I have 12 dahlias that are desperate to be planted, so proud of myself to have grown them from tubers. I looked at the price of the potted ones today: $25 for one plant the size of mine! 😱 the tubers cost me $36 plus the potting soil. A big digitalis is $24! The same sold for $9 four years ago. Crazy crazy. I did buy a "few" plants at greatly reduced prices 😁

@@perennial-garden I am a volunteer gardening as some memorial gardens near me. They are old and breathtaking to walk around they are called Stoke Poges Memorial Gardens if you are interested. I wish our council would take better care of the verges. Some people do look after the verge (which doesn’t belong to them) while others don’t and the grass grows really tall. I do plant sunflowers at the bottom of my road as my neighbour. There is a piece of land in the village that no one (county, parish council and property developer) claimed so some like minded gardening friends and I now tend the spot. @perennial-garden
@perennial-garden 16 дней назад
We started off with one one flower bed and grow the whole garden from there. We wanted to grow our garden from cuttings, division and seed collecting... so it takes time. What you see now (all the flower beds, deck, etc) we started 'planning' for when we moved in in 2018. I think it's safe to say that 90% of our garden is from cuttings, divided plants and seeds that we've collected. For your question :) -- we plant very closely together -- about a hand's width apart. Way closer than the guide books suggest you plant. But we do this because we don't want a bunch of weeds and want a more natural looking garden. So for you, I would suggest the same. Start with a few plants that you love, plant them closely together and let them self-seed, you can also collect the seeds to better 'guarantee' that you get new plants every year. And then, if something gets too crowded, dig it up and move it out. That's the beauty of perennials... they are very happily divided (most of them anyway) and moved. I hope that helps a little bit 🥰 If not... let us know 😊
