Nice! You guys are the reason why I switched my show tank to a south American cichlid from African. I had 30+ peas and haps and the last week I had them I lost 10 fish from aggression. They were 50$ a piece so it got expensive fast lol so glad I switched. Glad I found your channel✊
Nice tank. I came over here from your Dad's twitter. Super great you guys are pursuing this hobby together. For some reason I thought one of you were coaching and teaching down south... No matter, I have a tankful of Africans that have been with me for the last 10 years, that is to day the tank has been up for over 10 years. The cichlids are babies of babies of my original tank stock!
You should use super fine steel wool to clean the outside of the tank. It’s a glass polisher and nothing works better than it. It’s also very cheap at any hardware store
Rainbows I agree are super underrated and breeding time they get black bellies brilliant gold above the horizontal line beautiful fish incredible parents and I can’t find one in Michigan
Woooooooo sports! Lol Jk what sand is that? Amazing build I love it. I love the wood on little flats. How can I get wood on some flats like that? Thanks for sharing ❤️
Love the progress report! What kind of sand did you guys use? I've tried a few different ones and haven't found one that I like. My bigger fish just fling it everywhere and the tank turns into a cloudy mess.
Really love the rainbow cichlid Don’t see them often in Michigan 20 years ago I used to bring them in by the bucket load and give them to the fish stores now I can’t find one go figure
So I’m new to cichlid keeping and I’m absolutely falling in love with them.. every store around me says not to house an Oscar with Texas or chocolates, sevrums, Dempsey, terrors or anything really. Obviously I know there’s risk and every fish is different but it seems like you guys are pretty successful when mixing these fish. Is this just going to be a trial and error thing for me?
I would have just stuck with the geophagus and severens plus big tetras. Over time it will be prettier and less agression. One of these current fish is going to be the tank boss. Any oscar you add now, unless substantially larger will get hammered in my experience.
Yeah we suggested it but it was Billy's choice. We guided him away from some (like Doviis, Jaguars, and Salvini), but it was ultimately his tank and preferences
My african cichlids won’t eat, i’ve tried tropical fish flakes and cichlid pellets and they don’t seem to want to eat, i got them around 4 days ago and really have only seen one eat. I know a heater is needed for these guys but my tank already sits at 75 degrees F, any tips on how to get them to eat? i only have 3 in a 20 gallon is there a certain amount of pellets i should put in there? any help would be great thank you!
What kind of African cichlids ? I’d make sure they didn’t have a parasite. It’s rare that I have a cichlid go more than 3 days without food after being introduced to my tanks, so my initial thought is internal parasite
They sometimes will not eat for long periods in new environments they also will sneak and eat. It’s almost like they don’t trust new owner, lol, they will come around go very light on feedings until you see them eating. They’re most likely eating when there’s no distractions. They’re building a relationship with you.
Throw some Brine shrimp in there they will 100 percent eat and sometimes when I introduce a new cichlid to a tank they dont eat for a week or 2 if there shy
everything in this video was looking great until...... the API test kit came out. big dips for that boys, anyone in the industry knows the API test kits are some of the lowest quality, and are often incorrect with their results. SERA is a good solid brand, used throughout the marine/aquarium industry here in australia. i would highly suggest get a few different test kits from other well known brands and retesting the same water with each one, you'll soon see why API is cheap.
It deeply saddens me that some one with the money like Billy gets a fresh water tank and not a salt water I would sell my organs to be able to afford a huge salt water tank:(
Yep. Shows that your beneficial bacteria are working to convert ammonia into nitrate. Algae can also consume small amounts of nitrates, just like live plants.
