Thanks for taking us along again on this hunt Dana! I've hunted that country a couple times and every time I watch your hunting footage it takes me back to those days I was able to hunt the big bush country of your beautiful province! Congrats on an outstanding deer, you both did well and the little guy got to experience it as well!

Absolutely gorgeous bucks! Congratulations! Nothing wrong with a frontal shot. I’ve made multiple frontals and it’s a good way to put them down fast. 30 yards is the furthest I’ve had to track something after a frontal and that was a bull elk. Sure sometimes it can get a little messy, but in the end if your quick to knock the guts out your meat will be just fine!

In the bush where we hunt, we don't get to be picky on shot selection. Oftentimes you just take what you can get. Having the right gear and equipment to do the job makes a big difference. It was a shot I was comfortable with, and I'm glad I took it.

If anything, i can seriously appreciate the dedication you have to chase a single buck for multiple years and not take any other buck but that one. I jave target bucks like everyone else, but usuya few and even if a new buck comes in during the rut that is mature and nice, ill take him if i have the chance

It’s a real challenge for sure. But I think that’s what I enjoy most about whitetail hunting. Trying to learn as much as I can about 1 particular buck and then dedicating myself to outsmarting him. More often than not I lose.

We're very fortunate to live in an area that produces giant whitetail every year. I suppose it's the remoteness, and lack of access that allow for them to reach maturity. And the fact that they're very difficult to hunt.

Thanks! Nothing special about what we do. Step 1: find a big deer (sometimes the hardest part) Step 2: spend as much time as you possibly can in his house. That’s essentially it. Don’t forget, I get the entire month to focus on killing a big deer. Not many people are afforded that luxury. Plays a big role in my success. I’m stubborn and dumb enough to sit every single day in a month if I need to. And if you’re in his house, eventually he’ll walk past. Just an odds game. It’s a lot more basic than most people make it out to be. We don’t have any secret tips or tricks. We just have time.

I can definitely get you in touch with some of the local outfitters nearby that offer very similar styles of hunts in similar areas. They have solid success rates and kill some fantastic deer as well. But don't mistake it for an easy hunt. One of the more difficult whitetail hunts you'll do. But the potential reward is worth it if you can handle it. It takes a special kind of hunter to do it. It's a diehard type of hunt. But I love it.

I’ve been shooting the Weatherby Mark V in 270 Weatherby magnum for the past few seasons and I’ll admit, it’s really surpassed my initial expectations. It’s an often overlooked cartridge with incredible performance and ballistics. It wasn’t until I started really liking it that I realized how many different rifles it can replace for me in my cabinet, as it performs in so many different applications.

Why do you hate hunting cut lines?
@FatalImpactOutdoors
@FatalImpactOutdoors 10 месяцев назад
Because you see a lot of deer that you could never get a shot at. During the rut, these bucks are cruising non stop, and you’ll see a lot of deer that simply slip across the line without ever seeing what they were. The odds of your target buck stepping out, stopping, and then being able to execute a good shot just seem low. But it HAS proven effective for us. Just never my favourite.

How is it possible to kill deer that big on public land? Like honestly, how does that work..... does he hunt over a scrape, or what?
@FatalImpactOutdoors
@FatalImpactOutdoors 10 месяцев назад
It all comes down to time. And I’m fortunate to have the entire season to work with. I’m able to spend more time than anyone else. I recognize that advantage. I’m not a better hunter, I’m just dumb and stubborn enough to sit long enough in a deers house. Just old-school, basic whitetail hunting strategies. But the key factor is time. Without a doubt.
@Manbunmen65
@Manbunmen65 11 месяцев назад
Using trail cameras will give you lots of info. The downside is it makes you a mentally weaker hunter.
@FatalImpactOutdoors
@FatalImpactOutdoors 11 месяцев назад
There's some Merit to this comment for sure. In some ways it can make you weaker. The key is finding the balance between using your instincts and understanding of whitetail deer, and the intel that the cameras provide you. In the end, you're hunting a whitetail buck. They're creatures of habit. Once you understand how to hunt them, then the camera intel just helps nudge you in the right direction. But in the end, nothing replaces time in the stand. You can be sitting in a really shitty spot, but if you sit there long enough, eventually a big deer will walk past by accident. The key is time.

@FatalImpactOutdoors
@FatalImpactOutdoors 11 месяцев назад
What you can't see is that he was walking down the line towards us, but the line had several dips and hills in it. He only had another 30-50 yards to come before he went into another dip and he wouldn't have reappeared until he was about 125 yards from us. Which is unlikely as he would have most likely dipped off into the trees at some point. In the bush where we hunt, you have very limited time to make a shot. The deer are always moving, and they're not coming to a bait pile or any other form of attractant. You can't control their movements or dictate what they do. That line isn't as wide as you think it is, and at any moment he was going to turn and step into the trees. And the odds of yelling at him and stopping him mid-turn are very low. I took the shot that was presented to me with equipment that I was comfortable with and have a beautiful whitetail buck on the ground because of it. Oftentimes, we can't be picky with shot selection where we hunt. We just focus on killing deer. And we've become quite efficient at it.

@garycross5160
@garycross5160 11 месяцев назад
Exactly. You only get one chance on those crafty old bucks. I hunt the same narrow cutlines, and I take the shot the 1st opportunity I get. Otherwise, it's a shoulda coulda woulda. Also, having a very accurate rifle off a good rest like you had gives you the confidence to make that shot. Well done.
