This couldn’t have come at a better time for our family. I’ve been so convicted about Halloween this year and have been considering whether or not to celebrate as we have in the past. The darkness of this holiday has felt overwhelmingly clear to me this year. Thank you for not being afraid to speak truth.

That’s what I was thinking, is you can “celebrate” death because now your family is with Christ. And would you maybe look at spirits differently if you had a child who died. So death isn’t something bad to talk about, death isn’t a scary thing, like Halloween is. But what if you could allow your child’s spirit to visit you still in Thai life? Not scary or bad spirits. But someone who has died and you would like to hear from or get a message from in this life?

Several years ago my husband and I felt convicted to be a presence for Jesus on Halloween. When our neighbors come to our door we hand out candy and say happy fall! We have little stickers that we put on each candy bar that says, Jesus is the Light. My daughter has a t-shirt with a pumpkin that says shine your light for Jesus. This year we're going to add a little Bible story booklet. It is a wonderful opportunity to witness! 😊

Such a bomb of truth!! We have never celebrated this evil holiday and it has always puzzled me how some Christians celebrate such an evil day! It is a day of the devil and we as Christians have no part in celebrating it.

I live in New Zealand, and it has always kind of blown my mind that Christians in the USA celebrate Halloween. Honestly, it's gotten far more popular over here over the past decade but it's still a relatively small holiday in comparison to others. I can say that I don't feel as though I missed out on anything by not celebrating Halloween as a child. :) As you said, regardless of its origins, modern-day Halloween simply isn't Christ-honouring.

Thank you so much for this episode. I grew up in a non-Christian household and did everything the world did because that was just “normal”. I gave my life to Christ right before I got married and now I’m a mom to a toddler and one on the way. We’ve celebrated Halloween every year except last year we just stayed home cause I began to feel convicted as I read more of the Bible and really didn’t know what to do. This year I feel more empowered to do the opposite of Halloween and celebrate Christ in our household.

I grew up doing Halloween every year. We were passionate about it. Last year my husband and I felt a strong conviction not to participate, so we stayed home and had a family movie night instead. It wasn’t too difficult for me because the Halloween I grew up with seemed more mild than what Halloween is today. It seems so evil and dark today compared to what I grew up with.

Not to be legalistic, but I was never wishy-washy or unsure about Halloween. I think it’s obvious to ANYONE what it celebrates - death, evil, and darkness, all of which Christ came (and died!) to defeat! Really good point about getting kids used to the idea of being different from the world. My 8 year old brought it up recently, that kids are lucky for getting candy - and I was like, don’t you get enough candy as it is?! Also, we recently started writing a sign by our house that we don’t celebrate Halloween because Jesus came to bring life & light, and that’s what we celebrate (not what I wrote word for word but that’s the gist of it).

I’m Catholic, never thought *too hard* about Halloween until 4 years ago when we had our daughter baptized (in an espicopal church for some reasons) and the date of the baptism was the Sunday before Halloween. All the kids in church were in costume!! I thought it was so inappropriate. The bishop called all the kids up to the baptismal bowl to bless the baby and they were all in costume! I felt soooo offended by it but it wasn’t something I could complain about in the middle of the ceremony (especially since I didn’t realize it was happening until they all walked up to the front.) I just couldn’t believe the kids wore costumes to church and participated in what is supposed to be a holy sacrament in costumes like that. Definitely had me feeling differently about the holiday as a whole and our attitude about it after that.

There are Christian origins of Halloween and it can be a time to remember those who have passed. I grew up in an Episcopal church where they had a very wholesome children's celebration/carnival with games and treats on Halloween. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints%27_Day

@@elizabethlizbaker that's fine, I don't mind the sentiment in general, but I did not appreciate or expect it to happen at my son and daughters baptism. when we go to church there's a level of formality, you wear your "Sunday best" not halloween costumes- ESPECIALLY to a holy event. wouldn't dress like that for a wedding or funeral either.

Hi Katie and Elisha 👋🏼 I agree- I don’t celebrate Halloween as a Christian and I really don’t understand why some Christians celebrate it. My husband and I grew up in the world and celebrated Halloween for most of our lives, but now we will not participate or allow our children to participate in anything related to Halloween knowing what we know at this time. I heard you say that you’re considering handing out candy as an evangelism tactic. I would encourage you to pray about that and reconsider, especially since former witches and warlocks have come out, saying that they would pray over the candy. Check out what John Ramirez (former satanist/ warlock) has to say about Halloween. I pray all is well with you and your family and really enjoy your content 🤍

I did not glorify God as a teen & Halloween was always a time to go to parties. My son was born on Halloween & I wanna cry even thinking about it. It’s one thing to try and teach them truth that they sustain from this holiday but his birthday is on it. All the more reason for him to go out as an adult and party. All I can do is be faithful to endure the faith and teach him 😭

To answer your question, a big reason most Christians feel a need to participate in Halloween really has everything to do with their kids attending public school. In the same way that you all are in the minority on this issue, you are also in the minority as far as being homeschooled. It’s on the rise, thankfully, and I plan with the Lord’s help to homeschool my kids even though I went to public school, but it really is rare still. And insomuch as the kids attend public school, they are exposed to a classroom full of Halloween decorations for the whole month of October, worksheets with jack-o-lanterns and ghosts, and Halloween themed lessons. We are primed in school to desire to participate in Halloween. I can remember that my parents didn’t let me celebrate Halloween or go trick-or-treating, and I would feel so left out the next day when all the kids brought candy to class and I didn’t have any. So parents feel a need to compromise and give their kids the opportunity not to be left out and/or bullied about it. That’s why they will do the autumn-themed candy and costume events and churches and whatnot. The urge is just not as strong if you aren’t in the environment, and I’m glad you all were shielded from that; I plan to do same for my kids. I watched way too many horror movies as a kid. We were kind of latch-key, low supervision kids, and I think many are. People just aren’t intentional. So yea, that’s my two cents on it. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I find what makes people confused about what is “Christian” is that Catholics, Mormons, JWs and evangelicals all call themselves Christian. That’s a lot of history to mix and mash together and Christianize anything. Being a Bible believer and following a God’s word (specifically the New Testament) is what makes or breaks whether something is ok for born again believers as you’ve said. I was raised where we dress normally, and pass out little baggies with a chick tract and some candy to anyone and everyone. Our very small church would even sign up for a local community Halloween giveaway and dressed normally with no Halloween decorations at our booth pass out hundreds of those pre-prepared baggies. Definitely a good opportunity for evangelism.

I grew up with Halloween and loved it in a small town. The decorations were more or so harvest decorations and nothing scary/dark. We knew our neighbors well and it gave us a chance to go see familiar faces and visit for a little bit. Most of the treats were homemade taffy/candy apples, and it was done around 5pm, before sundown. I have very found memories of it. With my kids we brought them over to a senior retirement house and they had no decorations but handed out treats to the kids and again visited. I always saw it as a fellowship experience, and we were lucky. We recently moved to a city, and missed Halloween last year due to COVID. But now I'm conflicted. I have a very strong feeling that it will be nowhere near what we're used to, but my kids are looking forward to it. They dress up in their cute dresses on top of their jackets (good old Canada) and get glow bracelets. They truly look forward to it, and I'm torn. Our neighbors don't practice due to belief either, therefore we'd be heading to strangers houses, which isn't as appealing

I totally agree with you on Halloween. We have never done it..excluding carving pumpkins. My parents never did as they were from England and it was not celebrated like here in America- it was all evil. Sadly they are doing it more now over there. But my parents looked up all the origins in the enchiladas with us and showed us where it all started then showed us in the Bible why we should not participate. Thanks for this post. Our 5 year old knows why we don’t. The other day he said Mommy I can’t wait for it to be over as I don’t want to open my eyes while we drive to school and see all this evil. For my son he loves that we go out to a fast food restaurant and then come home and eat as a family in candle light then play a game or read a book and go to bed

If you are a true born again believer in Jesus Christ. This isn't even a question that should be discussed because the Holy Spirit has already given you the answer and you have already made a decision. I strongly encourage all who have made the decision to give their life to Christ in baptism to read the word of God for yourself and you will have your answer. Amen. God is crystal clear - satan is the ruler of confusion. We do not celebrate or sugar coat Anything that celebrates honors or recognizes pagan or demonic rituals that were done through history. Again God's Holy Spirit will lead you into All Truth found Only in the Word of God. He loves you so much -ask Him and He will show you. Sending love and prayers to all! God bless!

I agree but GOD made pumpkins. Remember God says-do not say something is UNCLEAN that I have said IS CLEAN. It is all from God. Pumpkins are literal food. They don't grow in cans just for pie. they are good for eating. Don't be superstitious - God knows the heart. Plenty of us buy or grow pumpkins/squashes and store them in our kitchen because they can last for months and are a perfect storage food. I am in No way inviting the devil into my home. Now, if I am PAINTING them and decorating them, that is a different thing.

I don’t celebrate Halloween but I see nothing wrong with a pumpkin. They are harvested in the fall. Just because some satanic person says they invite the devil is hog wash. Maybe to them but not to me. God gave us pumpkins. That would be like some satanic person saying the computer invites evil so don’t have one. Well truth be told, it’s how you use the computer whether it invites the devil or not.

Halloween at its origin is a Catholic Christian holiday. Hallowed meaning Holy and since Nov 1st is the day we celebrate the saints in heaven the eve of that day is All Hallows Eve. I agree that it has become something totally different in 2023. It has been completely secularized. I think it’s important though to teach our children that it was Christian at its roots and that the world can’t take it from us. We celebrate Hallowtide (oct 31, Nov 1st and Nov 2nd) by going to Church, celebrating those that have died in Christ and have gone to Heaven and praying for the holy souls in purgatory. Even skeletons we use to discuss in our family the idea of memento mori (Latin for remember you must die). Let’s raise strong saints for Heaven by teaching them the truth about what has become a secular and many times demonic celebration. Reclaim Halloween!

Completely contrary to what many would have one believe, Halloween is _not_ a holiday that has close ties to the ancient past, nor does it have some ‘pagan’ antecedent, nor is it a continuation of several ancient customs. Halloween just does not have the “pagan precedent” so many people seem to desperately want it to. Halloween is to some people a very spiritual and magickal time of the year; for some it’s a time of fun and candy, perhaps a way to celebrate Fall in general. Still for others, perhaps a time to contemplate their own mortality, since the modern holiday mocks death. With the beginning of the dark half of the year, it is also a time to play on a few of the basic/core fears of humankind - fear of what lurks in the dark, and fear of death. Some perhaps are not quite sure what to make of it and prefer to steer clear of it; but however you wish to celebrate it….or not - Halloween is only ‘evil’ in the minds of those who choose to make it so. For me, the more pertinent question is why are certain Christian denominations so afraid of Halloween?
@Heyhappy-wj2gp

It’s not about being afraid of it. But as the Bible says to abstain from all appearances of evil. Halloween has nothing to do with God therefore Christians should stay away from it

I’m not sure you’ll have an idea of how to answer this since you yourselves don’t have to deal with a split family home.. but my husband had a daughter before we were married. We currently do not celebrate Halloween at our home, but have not had the chance to be with my step daughter on a Halloween night yet (she is 6. I married her dad when she was 3. We get 2-3 days a week with her).. My step daughter has expressed fear in the awful decorations we see when out and about. We have talked clearly about what is evil and how God hates that, vs. what God loves.. the problem here is that she DOES celebrate Halloween with her mom. She gets excited about it, but I also see that spiritual tug on her soul between right and wrong. She is cautious when telling us about things like this- what she’s dressing up as, etc. that is hard for us of course. But we also try to be sympathetic towards her knowing she didn’t ask for these two different worlds.. asking God to help us trust him and His plans

You aren't alone. We don't celebrate it either. Some of my kids are teens now and they have no desire to participate as they have gotten older. The confusion for children happens when people try to half heartedly not celebrate, but still participate in some things so as not to offend. We have decided not to participate and our kids don't want to participate either, as they can clearly see the contradiction it is for a Christian to celebrate Halloween. It's ok NOT to celebrate Halloween.

Don't really get why "christian" families do it (with spooky costumes and decorations) and think nothing of it. The devil, demons (aka "ghosts"), fear, death, horror...are all very real. People say having sex before marriage, doing drugs and getting drunk is fun too. Doesn’t mean it should be done because it’s fun in the worlds eyes

Even the handing out candy has so much evil behind that practice.

No it doesn’t. During Hallowtide in England the poor used to go door to door and they would offer prayers for the souls of the deceased in exchange for “soul cakes” that the “givers” would bake.

I believe it can be a fun celebration as a Christian. It is whatever you make of it. We don't get into any of the gory/scary/dead stuff. My kids are only allowed to dress up in appropriate happy costumes. We read fun library books about pumpkins, black cats, apple bobbing, trick or treating and candy. Stay away from the darker things and we only do 5 houses that I pre pick before Halloween night that I have seen the decorations for to make sure its appropriate. And as we walk past fellow trick or treaters, my kids and I all say "HAPPY REFORMATION DAY!"

Turning Celebrating Christmas when you know it is not a Christian holiday into a "grey area are from black and white" is also wrong.

I refuse to give the day to satan and say sure halloween is for you. Nope. By not celebrating in an innocent way you give him the day to have.

Christianity is Not God. God and his law and attributes are different than christianity. Christianity takes everything of rome and babylonians and say its ok to particpate in it. Get out of denomination and actually read the old testament.

That’s the denominations of people who think they are Christian. Because stait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leaders unto life and few there be that find it. Matthew 7.14 JKV Agree though get out of the denominations and actually read the whole Bible

Christianity means follower of Christ it not a religious specific domination, it means you follow Jesus ONLY has God and your Saviour

There are Christian origins of Halloween and can be a time to remember those who have passed. I grew up in a church where they had a very wholesome children's celebration/carnival with games and treats. Sure, there are other origins, and sure, dark aspects to the secular holiday today, but you can always celebrate it by honoring loved ones who have departed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints%27_Day And yes, you do sound ignorant. There is already something called The Day of The Dead- it is a joyful Mexican holiday. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead
