1812 was an incredible year: Americas second war with the British had broken out, Jane Austen saw Pride and Prejudice go to print, Grimms Fairy Tales was read for the first time, and the residents of Auburn celebrated their first Christmas in their beautiful mansion in the Mississippi Territory.
Today, Auburn is owned by the city of Natchez, Mississippi and is currently a house museum. In a town filled with Greek Revival mansions, Auburn stands alone as the finest and purest example of Federal Neo-Classical architecture. If you are a fan of historic architecture and of historic home tours
At Christmas time, Auburn is decorated in a style appropriate for its age. You won't find Christmas trees in the parlor, stockings at the fire, or chestnuts roastings. What you will find are boughs of holly, balls of mistletoe, piles of oranges, and the most spectacular staircase in the region!
For those of you who haven't been able to stop by and visit us this season, we wanted to share a peek of our holiday cheer with you! This is just a little taste of the beauty hidden behind these 211 year old doors; we hope to welcome you in person sometime soon! MERRY CHRISTMAS from all of us at Historic Auburn

We are mourning the lost of an Episcopal church built in the 1600s. It was used by members of the Washington Family, played a roll in both the Revolutionary War and Civil War plus other history. It is rumored that the fire was arson. From the pictures, it looks like a total lost.

Oh that’s just heartbreaking- an irretrievable loss and an act of hate and stupidity 💔💔💔💔

That's a real crying shame! Even if the church hadn't played such a significant role in history, just the age alone makes it a treasure that's irreplaceable, and it's loss is a loss to the whole country. So sad.

Bonjour, je suis heureuse que vous vous soyez investie dans l'apprentissage du français.To add a little note regarding the history of Christmas decorations , the first Christmas tree in North America was set up on December 24th 1781 in Sorel, Quebec by Baron Van Frederick von Reidesel and his wife Charlotte following the custom of their native Germany. It was decorated with fruits and candles. Their house is now called "la Maison des Gouverneurs" and is open to the public.

Old English, Norse and Germanic traditions - Celebrated The Winter Soltice and The Yuletide (Yule Season) before Christmas came into being. Trees were left in place and "decorated" with seeds, suet, and dried berries by Celtic Pagans to provide for the birds as it became Winter. The "Pagans" Roman for People of the fields, or specifically, Heathens or People of the Heather, who gathered and brought inside pretty winter greenery, and mistletoe. Ireland too celebrated The coming of The Winter Solstice (the promise of the return of the Light) with bon fires, greenery and rich mythology and fairy lore.🕯

the choice of color is sad.
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 9 месяцев назад
The colors were chosen around 1991. As this is a National Trust property we must wade through 10,000 miles of red tape to make any changes at all: we can’t even take down the drapes without permission. We did nearly kill ourselves gathering greenery to decorate the home and make it as lovely as possible for the holiday. We are sorry you are disappointed at your chance to see inside a one of a kind national treasure. When we finally get permission to change the colors back to the original we hope you will find them more acceptable.

Very artistically done! Great filming, Kevin! While most people are familiar with the heavily loaded glitter and opulence of the Late Victorian era, I appreciate the simplicity of the festive decorations here, which are in keeping with the house. I love seeing the magnolia leaves, with their clean lines and bold statement, so different from pine boughs and holly. I know you've featured an Auburn tour previously, but it was a joy to see the name scratched into the window glass, and the fantabulous half-tester bed. Having access to the beauty of Auburn will help you keep the dream alive for the future of a restored Hope Farm. Happy Holidays to you and your families. Thank you for another great year of witty banter, great restoration information, and glimpses into the charming architectural bits and pieces of so many homes. Every one tells a story; the older the home, the more there is to tell. Cheers!

Very very beautiful! Lovely to see and wonderful to pretend to be in this historic home. Just wondering why the video was not done when the festive greenery was still fresh??? I would have loved to see these artful and tastefully done garlands and sprays when first in place! Please don’t think of this as criticism!! Just a desire to see what it looked like. I can imagine the wonderful smells as well. Thank you for this tour! Merry and Blessed Christmas!
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 9 месяцев назад
Because it took us so long to do that the greenery wasn’t fresh on the first bits by the time we finished the last bits, just like they wouldn’t have been 200 years ago. I, along with our decent Matthew, cut every stem of greenery, wired and placed every piece. It took about 3 weeks to complete all the areas

How did slaves celebrate Christmas in 1812? You left out their contribution or disregard to their contribution or servitude
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 9 месяцев назад
Lord have mercy, did you wake up in 2024 with a chip on your shoulder or did you just decide you’d piss in our Post Tosties this fine New Year’s Day? Well Peaches, since you’re new around here, let us award you your honorary Social Justice Warrior badge for your lanyard. NOW, if you’ll go watch some of our architectural education videos you’ll see we ALWAys address how the enslaved lived and worked in these homes. We even go so far as to find a former enslaved person and tell their story by name. But you wouldn’t acknowledge that… because that doesn’t give you any morality points. Peaches, this video is about CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS. It doesn’t talk about ANY of the people who lived on this home or what they did. You don’t have any idea at all about the stories we tell on this tour (a majority of them heavily feature the enslaved or former enslaved who lived here until 1910. The only person that we talk about that doesn’t deal the enslaved is the guy who murdered his girlfriend, but that’s another story). In short, just stop. Your glib posting on this video does absolutely nothing to advance the cause of telling the story of the enslaved people in the US. We are doing that literally every single day in this home. So, go enjoy your day and let the adults handle the real work.

The magnolia, especially on the tops of the furniture was completely dried out and shriveled. Normally it is shiny and forms branches. This stuff was put out months before. Oh, the holly was dried up, too. Sheesh. Way too many shots going up and down the stairs, This didn't do the house justice.

Well CC you just scootch your no doubt sizable derrière down to Natchez next year and gather, labor and film to your hearts content so it can be done to your standards. We can’t all be as perfect as you…. Le sigh

What a professional reply! I'd say your thin skin is what is sizeable. My derriere is just fine and in Virginia where I live, the inhabitants know to cut greens near the holiday so that they don't dry out. I invite my fellow commenters to look at the mantels, the holly around the display of apples and table top to see what I'm describing. Get a life.@@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 9 месяцев назад
You are correct in that the dermis IS the body’s largest organ, but thin it is not. How could it be when I have to deal with stupid comments like this on the daily? The one thing you can be 100% assured of on this channel is that you will receive a reply that is in the same exact energy as your comment. We just fed you the dish you brought to the potluck. If you want a professional reply then write a professional comment. I know this is REALLY gonna make your blood boil, make you feel utterly indignant, but I think if you’ll pause and use your thinking parts you’ll realize I’m right. You came into my “home” (channel) and made free with rude opinions that were neither asked for, nor helpful, nor necessary. You just had a rude thought and HAD to type it out. Do better next time. The docent of this home put this decor up one week before we shot this video. It’s not that tacky fake stuff that you are probably accustomed to, so it does tend to age naturally. That’s the same look you’ll find in all the grand homes here, because it’s REAL. You discredited his hours of hard work for literally zero reason. At the end of the day neither we nor any of your fellow commenters care about your opinion. You have the right to have said opinion, but you don’t have the right to word vomit over anyone’s hard work, be it the docents decorating or our video….which you enjoyed for free. So feel free to move on away from our channel. I can assure you we and our dried up greenery will not miss you.
