I agree Andy if you hold off and get to picky with potential buyers she may never sell one problem with selling boats a lot of tire kickers if it was me I would hold off going cruising till she is sold I would completely finish both boats and have the other boat sold and then go cruising the other thing is be careful on how many adds you put on I have seen on other channels they have lost followers trying to generate more revenue look at Delos they kept working for years so they could keep travelling and do the upkeep on the boat. Love the videos by the way keep them coming mate.

Gday Crew, As for mounting the solar panels, a T piece bolted,welded or riveted to roof centreline ( no bolts to bang head on ) , then use sufficient hinges on panels to each side of flat upright T section . T beam can be varied in height or thicknesses to achieve needed dimension or strength . Good luck with her ,great boat . Respect....!

The boat will sell eventually but I think you will have expand your group of potential buyers to beyond just the viewers of this channel. I know you explained the reasons for selling to a viewer but the money is needed in the timeframe which suits your plans for departure on Sailing Melody. The job on the cockpit cover/solar panels looks all very strong and neat.

I agree with you Jimmy. Andy, you should know how much you will accept, what she owes you etc. Therefore it would be sensible to table an opening price at a slightly higher level to allow for negotiating. Currently you are suggesting you are open to any offers. A nice principle, but unrealistic given the time and money you have all put into her.

We’re very keen to see the canopy mounted on board and how the final look will be. In the meantime we’re seen wonderful photos of the Bennington-Turner family in your social media. It might be too late, but why don’t you fiberglass the standoff with the brackets installed, instead of drilling holes into your top. You could make a bracket arm for the outsides that swings up and in as you raise your panels and then drops down along the side of the panel when they are all the way down.

Dear Sailing Melody family. 👍👌👏 You're doing a really, really great job on this unique cabin enclosure roof. A lot of planning/thinking and work went already into it. In this episode it's even more. 2) I always get emotional when I see Steel Melody because I kind of formed a bond with her over the years. I hate to see her go and I like her much more than the fibre glass boat (as I already commented several times). Please don't get me wrong, I know that she has to go and that you like Ocean Melody more because she's bigger and suits you better. Nevertheless, my personal kind of taste respectively opinion is different (obviously!). 😁 ;-) I really hoped that you would sail Steel M. at least once with the complete family, sigh. Anyway, I nevertheless of course wish you luck to find the right owner who is willing to honour your work/effort with the right price. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all of you. Post Scriptum: Please be so kind and tell me with what kind of drill bits you are able to drill through the stainless steel relatively easy. I always had problems drilling stainless steel. Post Post Scriptum: I didn't have any advertising in your/this video. Maybe it's different in/for Germany?!

Not sure about the solar panel mounting. It is true I have not done much in the way of long tacks where the Sun might remain pretty much in the same orientation but for sure I have anchored out enough to realize that a boat remains in the same orientation to the Sun for mere seconds at a time.... at least it seems that way. In the end keeping them pointed at the Sun might mean a lot of panel tilting all day. The second point being that I would not trust only four fastenings right in the corners to hold that panel from flying away. I am also not sure I would want to climb up on the rail to tilt/untilt while under way. I personally would not make them tiltable but rather just fasten them down solid. In fact I used my panels as the roof. It may be that I am being overly protective (of my boat anyway ;) ) and your plan will work just fine.... this is _just_ a comment after all. I will note, however, that with flat mounted panels at 50degrees north we get over 300 watts out of 400 watts rated panels (without taking the trouble to even make sure we have enough load to take more) , better than the 50% I designed for, for sure. In the summer, 50 north means maybe 70degree rather than 90degrees. If you plan to head south, things will only be better. Truth about solar panels is you design them for more power than you need. Double is pretty good as a start for any system. Actually, I prefer to go from the other end... put as much solar on as you can, divide by two and make your life style fit within that. Works for us. I am planning a hard top similar to yours but smaller for our smaller boat ;) I will be making our panels as part of the roof, that is inset into it but not so far the rim adds shadow. Yes this looks odd from the bottom and the wires do show so they need to be done neatly. We will not be adding electric cook tops, just lights, toy charging, nav and refrigeration.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
Hey thanks for the comment. We will only told them up at anchor, not when under way. There will be several retaining pins to hold them down not just the 4 corners.

We got on the forecast's over here in Toronto, Ontario what you are experiencing in your parts of the UK. I have the majority of my relations that live in Leeds down to Portsmouth. So, I get weather update regularly wanting to or not lol. Both Boats Melody and Steel Melody once complete are going to look great. And whoever takes over Steel Melody? And hopefully sooner than later will then if wanting to can assist and or watch you do the work that is left to get her sea ready. Seems as though you were working on both boats over this video in a long day unless it was videoed over 2 or 3 days. Just keep plugging away and you'll be completed Steel Melody for sure to have her taken off your hands to someone who'll make her theirs. Melody herself will even though you get fer sea ready will always be a piece of work needing to be done. She'll be your home and homes always need loving tender care. I would have suggested making the brackets for each end as single brackets with 2 holes- stronger and will maintain the centre spacing.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
I disagree. That way if the bracket fails you loose both panels instantly not just one
@grendel1960a
@grendel1960a 4 месяца назад
@@SailingMelody you would have 2 bolts holding a combined bracket, so stronger, but I see you have put some thought into this so cannot disagree with your reasoning, as if the force was strong enough to pull 2 bolts through your roof it would leave more damage to repair, while a single bolt might pull the epoxy plug out which is an easier fix.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
@@grendel1960a yeah it’s 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Honestly I don’t think there will be much strain on the panels though. They will always be in the down position when sailing and certainly in anything resembling strong winds. And they’ll be held down by more than just the 4 corners. So I really can’t see those hinges being under much strain at all as the panels will ok be tilted up in nice benign weather whilst at anchor

@johnnybuss5637 4 месяца назад
Your idea is good, possibly for a motorhome, a sailboat moves all the time and then it has a boom... with sails. But it is good to be able to keep the roof clean if you are going to collect rainwater from the roof. You get very little effect from tilting the panels, the sun rises higher in warmer countries than you are used to 😉
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
We won’t use the panels in the upright position when sailing. Only at anchor
@johnnybuss5637
@johnnybuss5637 4 месяца назад
@@SailingMelody I understand that part, but when you are at anchor, the boom with the sail will both shade and can break the panel. So don't raise the panel, the sun is high in the sky, especially around the equator 🏝️☀️😎
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
@@johnnybuss5637 for sure that will be something we need to learn to work around. But there’s literally nowhere else to put solar on this boat so it’s this or nothing. We have 350 watts x 2 panels we can put out on the foredeck when at anchor. 300 watts x 2 on this enclosure roof. 150 watts x 2 which I will install on mounts on the aft deck guard rail. So all in all we have as much solar as can practically fit and I totally accept that it’s all a trade off. The best solution would be to ditch the mast and cover the entire deck how to stern in solar and have absolutely nothing higher than the solar panels to shade them, which is what a lot of new design electric cruising multihulls are actually doing. But that’s not my style of thing and I’d rather accept having to move the boom dynamically depending on where the sun is and accepting less than optimal efficiency. There’s no perfect solution is there :) I’m installing a boom gallows so the boom can never drop onto the panels by the way. And I can even pull the boom way way way out over the side using a preventer if needs be. I guess we will find solutions as we go eh

@@johnnybuss5637 yeah we have approx 1500 watts altogether because we have a family and run a fair few electrical items. However we work on a very conservative estimate of likely efficiency given the points people have made about shade from the mast and boom etc. on a camper van there’s nothing to shade rhe panels and you don’t have as much electrical stuff to run as we do. That said, I’ve designed the boat so that we have layers of redundancy in case we lose parts of the system and also full manual mode where we can run the boat even if all the tech stuff craps out.

I can foresee serious finger damage at the corners of the panels in particular during rough weather! Just thinking of leaks and hitting heads on bolts, which is more likely on the outside. But I prefer things on the boat to be as free of electric motors or stuff like that as possible becsue the more motors and technology you rely on the more there is to go wrong. I tend to go KISS, keep it super simple, where stuff like this is concerned. Big heavy duty mountings and a simple gas strut to hold it up

Great to see the progress you are making I look forward to seeing you setting sail on your adventures. I have one question about the solar panels, when the panel is raised will the boom clear the panel?
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
No. We only tilt them up when at anchor

A bit late now, but im concerned with your thickened epoxy filling of oversize holes. Concept is great but id have made holes only slightly larger than bolt holes so they can be covered by washer. I have concerns that tension on the bolts from wind may cause the entire plug to pull outvof the structure as its only retention strength is the vertical joint between the thickened epoxy and the foam
@SailingMelody

I’ve glassed over them as well remember but I’ll keep a close eye on it. Do remember with the combined load they’re unlikely to be under much strain ever at all. With the screen in place and rhe canvas sides on there won’t be much wind getting in underneath the roof to force it upwards and the majority of any load will be forcing it downwards not up but I take on board your observation and will of course monitor these as part of my regular walk-around inspections

Would it be better to make your brackets out of aluminium since the panel is already aluminium ? PS I think bifacial panels would be better if you are going to have them on a tilt
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
I agree the frame is aluminium so making the hinges out of aluminium sounds like it would be a good idea. But you’d still be using stainless bolts so there’s still stainless/aluminium next to each other from a galvanic corrosion point of view. I already had the stainless angle so I can’t see a point spending money on aluminium angle to fix a problem tha won’t be a problem and wouldn’t be fixed unless I also got aluminium bolts which I wouldn’t do :)

Why not use the bandsaw instead of hacksaw? Its presumably already set to the same angle?
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
The throat isn’t large enohhh for the piece of foam lengthways, only width ways. It’s only a small bandsaw and if you look with the table set at that angle there wouldn’t be space to run the work piece through in the “portrait”’orientation

Hi Andy, re solar panels, your solution has no real mechanical fixing, are you sure those epoxy plugs won’t just let go in a storm ? Think a better solution would have been SS tube in the through hole with large SS washers each side.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 месяца назад
They’re bolted all the way through and will have large spreader plated on each side yes. The epoxy is only there to prevent rhe foam from being crushed when tightning the bolts
