The authorities in Frankfurt have refused to allow a pre-war restoration of the Paulskirche for some reason.

But if this revolution would have succeeded, the Kaiser wouldn’t be the head of state.

@@anneurysm1 DAS Vaterland. Because its "Das Land". In german you always use the Artikel matching the last word of a word-concatenation.

@@Schlohmotion I am not fluent in German, so "Der, Die, u. Das" I have to guess! My question is: how long has Germany been referred to as Das Vaterland? Or, when did it, regardless of how big the country was, get to be also called by that phrase?

@@j.lietka9406 I don't know. I looked up "Vaterland" on the dwds website. There you can scan thousands of german books, scriptures and publications for how often a word is mentioned in a year. (from 1600 to today). The term Vaterland has been around for really long. And used in 1600 (older than germany itself). I just looked into an old text (of 1603) and people used it to name the country of their origin "Vaterland". My guess would be: With the birth of germany itself, people began calling germany "Vaterland".
