The historical record shows that Joseph Smith did not implement or endorse any practices or policies which specifically prevented church members with black African ancestry from fully participating in priesthood offices or temple worship. But in 1847, only three years after Joseph’s death, attitudes and teachings of some church leaders began to shift away from full inclusion of blacks to partial exclusion until, only five years later, in 1852, President Brigham Young first publicly articulated a priesthood restriction on blacks in the church. In today’s episode of Church History Matters, we probe what exists in the historical record to learn what happened between 1847 and 1852 to precipitate this divergence in attitudes and teachings about blacks away from Joseph Smith’s more inclusive teachings and practices. We’ll then look at the context and content of Brigham Young’s first public articulation of the priesthood restriction and attempt to answer one very important question. Was Brigham Young inspired by God to institute the priesthood ban, or is this an example of an uninspired error?

Here is Joseph Smith's statement from April 7, 1836 that you fools keep ignoring: "Trace the history of the world from this notable event down to this day and you will find the fulfillment of this singular PROPHECY. What could have been the design of the Almighty in this wonderful occurrence is not for me to say, but I can say that the CURSE is not yet taken off the sons of Canaan, neither will it be until it is affected by as great a power as caused it to come.... Thanks for sharing - it is helpful to get more context on the environment of the time. As Elder Uchtdorf stated in General Conference: "even leaders make mistakes" - and, as you noted, they can have significant impact to peoples lives. Part of the challenge is that it was not much later that Wilford Woodruf made his statement in the declaration 1 "address excerpts" that the Lord would never allow a prophet to lead the people astray - and that is canonized in the scriptures.... So, I think led many of the members to adopt the perspective that a prophet may "make mistakes" - maybe run a stop sign, mis-state someone's name - but would NEVER make a major doctrinal/policy mistake that would lead the people astray.

At about 21 minutes where BY disagrees with OH on premortal causes: BY hated OH. He said he was “stench in my nostrils” and “is no more fit to lead the 12 than a dog”. Ouch. OH could have said the sky was blue and BY would have disagreed. That said, OH was speculating and wrong on the origins.

and the people who are determined to interfere the least with the decrees and purposes of God in this matter will come under the least condemnation before Him, and those that are determined to persue a course which shows an oppisition and a feverish restlessness against the designs of the Lord, will learn, when perhaps it is too late for their own good, that God can do His work without the aid of those who are not dictate by His counsel." Even Christ had to work through bigoted feelings in his society and even his disciples. Matt 10: 5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. 12 And when ye come into an house, salute it. 13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. The environment of the day, especially where the saints lived, was simply a powder keg. Joseph was progressive and that unquestionably had an impact. Not a primary driver, but cumulative effect of that and other drivers can’t be denied. So, Joseph and Hyrum are murdered. Brigham is tasked with the migration west and protecting the saints with a long history of violence and death against the saints. It’s possible BY felt being so progressive on this issue might have stoked more persecution and destroyed the shaky church. Johnstons army came all the way out to destroy the Mormons once and for all…of course, BY did things to protect the fledging church and its people including a middle of the road policy on blacks. Now, some doctrinal statements as to why are just speculation and wrong. One might also find fault with the brethren for waiting so long. I wouldn’t recommend that (ever), but the question is there nonetheless. I don’t have good reasoning for that, but I do see where the church changes slow. The lord allows that. Big changes are even slower. This was a massive change to policy that had been around for decades. Look at how many struggles with recent changes to two hour church and the hone teaching program. Those were not that big of a deal and people struggled with it. Ward boundary changes causes people to leave! Blacks and the priesthood was comparatively much bigger. All speculation with such an imperfect history and topic. We’ll just have to ask BY, his successors, and the lord one day.

Would someone be able to refer me to where any one of the Prophets said Brigham Young was wrong to implement the band? I'm not meaning the quote of saying interracial marriage is deserving of death penalty or the mark of Cain ect. I'm specifically referring to the Priesthood ban? Prophet infallibility Joseph Smith taught that only when a Prophet speaks as a Prophet is he he infallible. When he speaks as a man he is a fallible as any other man. I don't love the Priesthood ban or polygamy. I'm absolutely happy today neither are part of the Church. That said I am very slow to say a Prophet is wrong in the direction he leads the Church. President Woodruff taught that God would not let any one in that office lead the people astray. Reason why I feel I have to discuss this is because if we teach this members will soon teach and are already teaching things different than the Family A Proclamation To The World or masterbation or pornography not being a big deal or a whole host of things that are contrary to will of God. God makes His will known through His prophets. One thing I did appreciate this podcast said "we don't know why" yes let's stick with that admit it's difficult and uncomfortable and not throw Brother Brigham under the bus.

13:35 (for 1 minute). You are describing a church that is not led by God, but left to fend for themselves. So what IS the value proposition of being God's 1 true church, if it can be sooooo led astray and unprotected from philosophies of men mingled with scripture?

The Lord could have inspired Brigham with angles & flaming swords on the Slavery issue, but The Lord was silent. Such a pivotal moment. “Fumble”?

That's exact same situation as today. If the church stood against LBGTQ plus rights and stood a strong ground, people would cry and complain. If Brigham Young would have kept the priesthood in the church with the blacks at that time, people would have cried and complain. The church needs to do what God's will is and not what the cultural will is... People can choose whether the church is doing right or wrong at the time. It's a personal preference.

God doesn't need to tell us how to behave in every aspect of life. He intervenes when He desires, sometimes because we are not capable of working things out the way we should. We need to accept facts and work to not repeat the mistakes of the past.

I do not think the direction the church went was a fumble pre Civil War. The fumble was church members eventually believing the false doctrine Brigham used to justify his idea of no black leadership in Utah, and his servitude policy. Utah was a slave territory because of Brigham’s 1852 speech, many statements made thereafter, and considering the plight of stolen and misplaced naive Americans. There were dangers to the children of the Mexcan slve trade as natives sold or killed rivaling tribal children south, and servitude in Utah was a morally better policy than what existed before the saints arrived in the valley. Read “The Other Slavery” Working on homesteads with families of saints was better than the stolen children working to death in Mexican mines. The brutality required in the southern states to enforce slavery and segregation was completely legal and if Latter-Day Saints in Utah would have declared themselves a free territory and all rights given to former slaves, Latter-Day Saints would have been in danger all over the southern states. We had congregations there and Brigham needed to protect the saints from the general population of the USA. Also, do not forget that the Saints were evicted from the USA with shells and mortars. In 1850 Utah became a territory with no representation in the senate. Choosing to be a slave territory may have made Utah more likely to gain statehood considering the imbalance created in the senate of slave states vs free states when California became a free state and skipped being a territory. Also, consider that the southern states did not declare war on Utah( a slave territory) during the Civil War. Did being a slave territory help with not getting Utah sucked in to the Union army lines? Most likely. The church needed a policy or position that kept its members safest in multiple ways in multiple states, and multiple situations while it was legal to lynch dark and light people who intermarried. The LDS ban was the correct policy until the federal government was willing to put troops on the ground to enforce true freedom of all people and that did not happen until Eisenhower, JFK, and Johnson invoked the insurrection act in 1957, 1962, 1963, and 1968. There was really no recourse for those who breached the equality issue nationally until then since freedom was not really protected. We are one church. Not really able to have different policies crossing 50 state’s cultural lines spouting equality for all before it was protected by troops. The soonest the policy could have safely changed was possibly when the civil rights act was passed.

Prophetic infallibility. So glad I never adopted that philosophy of man mingled with scripture and simultaneously practiced a type of adoration, adulation and obeisance toward leders. Unfortunately I still see that today. I don't want any part of it and I'm raising my family that way. Great podcast.

There were so many errors. I dont know how I would have stayed in the church back then. Between 1844 and 1852 the big upcoming of polygamy too. It was such a mess. I can't wait to here what Jesus says about it all in his own voice one day.

It’s important to keep in mind, in that era all the leaders of the church were recent converts as well. While the restrictions on black priesthood holders clearly did not come from the Lord. I would not equate that issue with polygamy. While Polygamy would have been very difficult for many of us to live. It’s important to point out that it was commanded by the Lord for his restored church to grow and very possibly for it to survive. How many members and leaders of the church today can trace their roots back to righteous polygamous marriages. A lot.

Jesus would say, Why did you not believe those scriptures from the books of Abraham and Moses that Joseph Smith translated? Why did you not believe the words that he spoke about it? Why did you not believe what so many prophets and apostles taught about it, even though some of their statements were incorrect. Did you not read in the scriptures where my mission only was to the Jews? Was I a racist for that, or was in Gods will? You should not have listened to those puffed up in pride in their own wisdom and learning! Why were you not afraid to speak that way about my servants?!? See Numbers 12!
@MommaCrissa
@MommaCrissa 4 месяца назад
@@joechristiansen6016 I don't believe that. I believe polygamy was something in all ages that was brought forth from Satan. That Brigham thought this was something to be restored because he (and many) thought this was something God instituted as shown by people living it in the Old Testament. If you read through the OT carefully keeping in mind the covenants made and when they are made, Abraham became the Father of the Covenant because he repentanted of that abomination (although it was Sarah who finally gave in to the culture and doubt that she would not be blessed with a child). When, the covenant was made they became a righteous branch. Same with Jacob, following a culture gave into another wife and concubines until he realizes after given Rachel and is given name of Israel as a sign of his covenant. Brigham brought on blood atonement /murder, he took away the relief society, he took away blacks holding the priesthood (although I don't think we even understand the priesthood because between God and a man can make this happen directly as it discusses in the scriptures in the Bible and Book of Mormon). Brigham did not repent but caused many, as compared to King Noah, to sin. The reason why we didn't have Zion is because a secret society was built up, killed Joseph and didn't live in the covenants God had established. We are slowly and individually coming back to God. Some are and some are not, it depends on our relationship with Him and our adherence to hear and hearken.

Joseph Smith himself made this statement confirming the true church doctrine from the books of Abraham and Moses: ",The curse is not yet taken off the sons of Canaan, neither will it be until it is affected by as great a power as caused it to come."
