This is how stones are set, not how jewellery is made. The jewellery is already made and he's setting the stones
@gnarbeljo8980

This only covers pavé stone setting, and indeed in great detail. However like the description says the jewelry piece itself isn’t hand made with old school techniques but printed and cast first, extremely common these days. Goldsmiths who make this kind of ring from start to finish including the setting are rare. People would rather pay less so those artisans and methods are becoming scarce as the printing and casting with stone setters finishing off with stones has exploded on an industrial level with a wide span of cheap and ugly to great quality work. Unfortunately alot of people these days can’t tell the difference and don’t even bring a loup when shopping for jewelry, so many spend on cheap craftmanship. This video is great and shows the work involved setting stones in this style. And Mendelsohn to boot! 😃

hey all.. thanks for the clarification, and I do love detail.. I understand this is just the stone setting process. I was just speaking loose by saying "how jewelry is made". Stone setting is what I really meant. But thanks yall

@@gnarbeljo8980 tbh if you do casting right you can make a just as good piece in half the time and it saves a lot of effort the ones who can make it without a cast usually don’t bother since it’s so much more effort for the same amount of money

Absolutely beautiful work, Im currently working my way up to doing things like this, starting by making simple anniversary bands. Videos like this really help me visualize new technique, so thank you so much. Im only 22, and have been in the industry since high school. I have found it very difficult to learn fabrication techniques... Because I dont see many jewelers that do it anymore, and the ones that do wont sit down and show me. So I have to teach myself... Seems like people prefer CAD to hand made stuff nowadays. Kind of a pity. Anyway, thanks for the great videos. Hope I can be this good some day.

Morgan Olfursson thanks for your comment and questions. It indeed takes a lot of patience and also practice. Th diamonds go as small as 0.55mm in diameter (not in this ring though) and are all precise machine cut with 57 facets.

You are a tremendous artist and craftsman and though people like you are behind the most brilliant (no pun intended) creations in terms of jewelry out there today and throughout history , nobody really knows your names . It is like painting or sculpting a masterpiece and not signing it , i find it very humble and humbling at the same time . And on a totally different note , I am a veterinarian and i don't think my hands are as steady as yours so congrats for that too, your hands and finger fine muscle control is very impressive .

Never knew so much work went into setting decent sized diamonds. I always knew it was many hours of labor for the tiny little dust sized ones that are usually found on watches. But wow, thats really a multi step process for rings too. Looks like something id enjoy for work, im a perfectionist and ive got the hands of a surgeon, but cutting gold looks more fun.

Hi, the stones seem to sit nice and tight even before beading. If setting a 2mm stone, do you use a 2mm ball bur in the end to cut seat or use a smaller bur than the stone size so stone sits tight?
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 4 года назад
You see that very correctly. I normally drill with a round bur of 1.30 mm but after drilling 100 + holes the bur is not 1.30 but more like 1.26 - 1.28 due to the wearing of the metal. As the gold is relatively soft and the diamonds very hard I can gently push the stones in ;-)

You cut the prongs, but did you need to cut a seat for the stones as well or did you just set them in the prongs?
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 6 лет назад
The Original Wilson I had to cut and drill it all. Started out with a solid surface.
@TheOriginalWilson
@TheOriginalWilson 6 лет назад
So you did cut a seat in the prongs for the stones
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 6 лет назад
The Original Wilson no seat. The prongs are so tiny one can bend them over easily without cutting any seat

is the bur the same width as the diamond? also, when you measure distances between diamonds, how much space do you give them? or are they just flushed together?
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 3 года назад
Hi Mostefa, Yes the burr is the same width. I try to flush these diamonds together as tightly as possible. So perhaps 1.32 mm for 1.30 mm diamonds

I always wondered how people have bust down watches, chains or rings and their diamonds dont fall out. Som you put them in and then clasp them down . So freaking logical lol

What engraving machine do you use in your videos, is it Graver Mach?
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 6 лет назад
Guldsmeden Carlberg hi, I already replied on your question on my other video. But it is not graver Mach. It is art graver from Jura.

Are the seats cut to exact size of stone or slightly smaller so stone sits tight? Eg: 2mm ball bur for 2mm round stone?
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 4 года назад
Seats are cut to the exact size. But over time a 1.3mm round burr 'rounds' off so it's more like 1.28 .

Interesting. Is the Form 2 not precise enough to reduce the work needed to measure and drill? Seems like it could at least make pilot holes to make it quicker.
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 4 года назад
Hi Chip, I guess it might be an option. However this level and quality of diamond setting work goes up to 0.01 mm precision. So I always prefer to actually take the gold product and start measuring/making calculations from there on. As there is always shrinkage in 3D printing, in casting and in polishing etc. ;-)

What is the tool you use to actually pick up the stones, and push them down into the seats?
@heinikendude
@heinikendude 5 лет назад
Hi Cory, Sorry for the delayed response. It's a nail with a hollow tip. Or you can also use an old beading tool

Most of the tools used are from Jura Tools, if you mention which you mean by indicating the minute marker I can be more specific.
