The cancellation on the 6 Pies British India stamp is for the Portuguese colony of Lourenço Marques (Maputo) that later became Mozambique. I'm guessing the original cover had a British India cancel and this one was added as the letter was passed along. Nice Mongolia stamps! The last Junior album is what makes up the 1840-1940 volume of the Scott International series despite the Big Brown Scott albums having more coverage. Interesting albums - thanks for sharing!

8:10 means that this cancellation is from Laurenco Marques, a Portuguese colony. Greets from GER, U.

Indeed, Portuguese postmark as well. Extremely unusual, never seen that before. Would be interested to find out the history of it.

I have just been working with an old album myself (1902) and I have encountered a common problem with these older albums: that of stamps stuck to the page, some of them valuable. Since collectors, years ago, did not have the standards of condition that we have today, these albums were often improperly stored; sometimes, the gum of unused stamps was convenient for attaching unused stamps to the page. There is a solution to this problem without soaking and destroying the gum on such stamps. If stamps are stuck on a page that is worth preserving then stamp lift fluid can be applied to the opposite side of the page. If stamps are on paper that is not worth saving, then a stamp lift box, which works off of humidity, can be used. Both are available from stamp dealer. These products can preserve as much gum as possible on stamps that are stuck. It is good to practice with common stamps first , in order to get a feel how much time is needed in order to free a stamp that is stuck, as leaving a stamp for too long can cause damage to it.

At 6:42 the King Edward VII 2c is placed there rather than in its spot because it is used in Shanghai. Nice find

Nice selection of early stamps. One thing that I can point out is that the penny red stamp that is shown at 1:30 is not the penny red that has plate numbers in the scroll work. The penny red with plate numbers in the scroll work was issued in 1864 and has letters in all four corners, which show where the stamp was located in the sheet. The penny red shown has letters in only two corners. That stamp was issued 1854-1856 and has varieties of paper; perforation and engraving.

@@mallardstamps I also meant to say that two different watermarks were used with that stamp. It has the same exact design as the world’s first stamp-the Penny Black. The color was changed in 1841 to red brown, I understand, to make it easier to see the cancellations. Perforations were added in 1854, and letters in the top corners were added in 1864.

@@willardtaylor6249 Excellent summary! This happens to be my specialty collecting area, which is both a blessing and a curse... 😃 The colour (Rose Red) means that it is from Die II (two, not eleven), and will have a Large Crown watermark. The perforation is 14, which makes it Stanley Gibbons Specialty Catalog # C10, or Scott # 20. These were printed from August 1857 onwards. The 'L' check letter (southeast corner) is unusually far to the right, which means (to my surprise) we can fairly easily determine the plate number right from the video image as being plate #47. These Die II "Penny Star" stamps were printed in plates numbered up to 67, at which point the design was changed, as you said, by adding the upper check letters, changing to a newer sans serif alphabet, and engraving the plate numbers in the engine-work on both sides of each of the 240 units on the plate. Printing of these stamps proceeded from plate #71 up to the difficult (ie expensive) plate #225.

@@psarj Thank you for the additional information which you brought out concerning these early issues. You added some points I did not know and you increased my knowledge about them.

@@willardtaylor6249 Collecting the 400+ plates of GB 1d red issues is a marvelously challenging and rewarding area of the hobby. Possibly the most intensively studied area of philately over the years. The stamps have been around for over 140 years, and yet new ideas and new discoveries are still being made. And the cost of entry is not outrageous. The C10 in Mallard's album has a catalogue value of less than $10. In less than perfect condition they can easily be found for $1 or less...

Nice album. I also have a lot of Roman States some of which are pricey so I assume that they are forgeries. I have always been exciteed about out of the way places so Mongolia is on my top five list along with other places like Nepal and North Borneo.

Are you going to keep the stamps in the album or transfer them to something else. I have an old album and I’m not sure what I want to do with the stamps in it. I do really like it the way it is.
