1890s Bicycle Bloomers: FREE PATTERN MAKE & REVIEW

I take the free pattern from bikesandbloomers.com and -lacking any assembly instructions whatsoever- make my way through the process of making a pair of relatively authentic bicycle bloomers from the mid 1890s.
For those of you who are interested in history bounding, or who are looking for how to get started history bounding, I highly recommend this pattern as a start because they aren't too conspicuous compared to a modern day pair of pants, except that they have HUGE POCKETS! Cue all the women out there are cumulatively screeching in joy.
This pattern was based on a patent (or combination of patents, it's not clear on their website) lodged in the late 1800s, and it does strongly resemble other patterns and garments I've seen from the era, so I'd say it's fairly accurate. That being said, I did NOT make this pair with entirely historically accurate techniques... not this pair anyways. I definitely foresee another pair in my future!
For those of you looking for the link to the pattern, it is available here: bikesandbloomers.com/staff-ite...
They also have some other free, late Victorian period, cycling-related outfits, if you want to give them a try.

I am so disappointed in the RU-vid algorithm for only recommending your channel to me about 1.5 weeks ago especially as I have been searching for content like this. On this plus side this means I get to binge watch. Keep up the good work!

Your attention to detail really shines in this project, Shannon. From knotting the ends of stitching, the bias tape edging applied to the facing pieces and then trimming the silk lining and hiding the raw edge under the wool seams, everything screams precision. I’m especially fond of the silhouette, the “poof” you described while trying on your mock up. Your bloomers are perfect for a boisterous ride through the village.

When I was in elementary school. I found a matching waistcoat and bloomers at the thrift store. My mom called them nickers. I loved them, but the kids in school made fun of me. I still loved them. My favorite fined still to this day.

Love that!! I, too, was the odd-kid-out... I had one Faire-Isle-esque sweater vest that I *absolutely loved* and I remember wearing it all the time, even though it wasn't even vaguely in fashion. Fortunately I don't remember being made fun of, at least!

I am definitely a Victorian tomboy and it's so hard finding content for this! Your pants came out so beautiful, I want to make a pair so bad. Did you make your vest?
@ShannonMakes

it's become a running joke that I have yet to do any sort of skirt on my channel (...*glances at planned content for upcoming months, finds more pairs of pants/secret pants and zero skirts*...) It's just SO HARD to convince myself to wear a skirt when I never know when I might want to climb a tree!! (and no, this vest was a lucky thrift store find, although I do have a few patterns that I want to try!)

Your cycling bloomers turned out *amazingly* I can't get over how fantastic the fit is on you. Even with your note that the pants are a bit too short, you honestly can't tell, the proportions still looks correct on you. Pretty jealous how few alterations you needed to make to this pattern bc I desperately want to make myself a pair of cycling bloomers and a free!! pattern is a phenomenal discovery but I *know* I'm going to have to make a gazillion alterations on top of needing to size up the pattern, which means... mock-ups, mock-ups, and more mock-ups. The wool you used is really beautiful and I love the large covered buttons. And for a welt pocket you made a bunch of mistakes on, it still looks pretty good. I've seen (and made) many a disastrous welt pocket, and I think you did an admirable job trying to rescue it from that fate. Thank you so much for making this video, I'll definitely be using it and the follow-up video as a guide if/when I end up making my own pair from this pattern.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Thank you! I know they don't look too short, that's only noticeable when cycling, because it pulls a bit as I pedal (a shame, since they're literally meant for cycling). Fortunately the sizing-up process isn't too hard, I have a friend that did it on this pattern (she had to size up quite a bit), and she just slashed and spread the panels and it worked beautifully. Otherwise there's a pattern on Etsy you could try, you can find it by searching "Plus-Size Breeches E-Pattern" by HouseofBrick Designs (and also I think Black Snail has a similar pattern).

About your reference: Sancho Panza is the sidekick of Don Quijote a fictional hero of Spain; Pancho Villa (Doroteo Arango) was a real person, it was one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution. I cannot believe how well they came out - I wore them on a group bike ride yesterday and got lots of compliments!! I did have to fudge the pocket bags, and the lining was helpful there too. I am very confident that you can tackle this project, even at your current skill level (regardless of what it is)! I encourage you to find an old bedsheet or some super cheap fabric, and make a wearable mock-up if you doubt your abilities and are nervous about "ruining" or "wasting" expensive fabric... then follow along with my videos (this one and the welt pocket one). While I don't cover every single step, there is a pretty good amount of the process included in the video. Worst case, you have an ugly pair of bloomers that you learned a lot of lessons on, and the next pair will be better and prettier... hence starting with cheaper fabric!

I wish I’d had this video before making mine. The pockets confused me no end. Tips: Check the length with your mockup On Your Bike - I had to add a LOT and I’m not tall. If you want to button your cuffs, finish the bottom few cm of the outside leg seam as a slit, so you can overlap the cuff. I also lined mine completely, but sewed the lining to the facings (I have another pocket bag piece). Also, if I remember correctly, the facing piece did not quite fit to the corresponding outer pieces, so check this carefully, or just trace it off the legs. Otherwise, I love mine and have used them a lot in late summer & autumn, they are very comfy indeed. I have a bit left of the wool and plan to make a matching waistcoat.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 3 года назад
Yes, as you see during the video, I did a wide range of motion test in my mock-up, which did lead me to add some length to the leg, and it ended up being sufficient - I biked 7 km to the location for the filming of the reveal shots at the end (plus normal everyday biking since), and the length is *just* enough for the biking. And no, I am not planning to button the cuffs - as I discussed briefly in the video, I plan to tuck them into my tall boots, and so I chose to leave the buttons off, as I knew the extra bulk would probably irritate me when it was tucked into the boot leg. And yes, I did check the facing piece - there's a whole section on how I shortened it to match the darts that I took in on the main pants piece based off of my mock-up. I didn't think to check the original pieces though, so it's a good thing I ended up adding in the darts! And yes, I agree that they are super comfy and have gotten a lot of use!

I was going to get some shots on my bike (we biked roughly 7 km to get to the spot where we filmed and I was wearing the pants the whole time), but about halfway there, we got caught in the most spontaneous, intense rainstorm for about 10 minutes, and we were soaked, and had lost a bit of the enthusiasm for the shoot in favor of wrapping it all up and getting somewhere warm and dry again! But hopefully in the future I can get some shots (on my admittedly not-even-close-to-historical bike)!

I'm going to be making these for my daughter. Quick question, when you printed the pattern off, did you use a specific setting? Did you print it at home or have a print shop do it. I've printed patterns from downloaded patterns before and they always suggest a print setting. I scoured the website but couldn't find any info.

I wanna make these but im confused as how id add just the tiniest bit more of a poof near the bottom cuff without it drooping over. Im using 100% cotton fabric (im new to sewing, its the only kind i could get my hands on lol) im doing a katara cosplay from the last airbender!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 2 года назад
Well if I'm understanding what you want, I think you want to add more width without adding more length. If you add more length, you're right that it will sort of sag over the cuff, although you could always try cutting them a bit longer, and then experiment with how long you can make them, slowly cutting them shorter until they don't droop. Fabric choice will admittedly play a role in this too - not just the fiber content, but the weave (I'm guessing you have quilting cotton, so that's good because it's a little bit stiffer, and less prone to sagging). The good news is that you can play around with both - start a bit wider and/or a bit longer, see if you like it, and you can always make it more narrow/shorter if you don't like the effect!

@bunhelsingslegacy3549
@bunhelsingslegacy3549 8 месяцев назад
@@ShannonMakes ...I don't know if you're familiar with the Japanese hakama that some folks here wear for martial arts, but it's got this complicated pleat thing in the front and back that does a great job hiding where the legs sepaate from the torso which is why I wanted to base my Secret Pants on... In order to do these pleats, you have to baste your two pieces of fabric together for the centre front and centre back seams so you start wtih two lines of basting one person-depth apart (then draw the crotch cutout on it) and then you open the front like a book and do the pleats, pin/baste, then flip it over and do the back pleats, and where to go from there made no sense after 8 years in the UFO heap. The new release of the pattern instructions include two pieces of paper stapled together at the front and back centre seams, and it was packed pleated (with a scale copy of the pleat template printed right on it) and if you're confused already, SO WAS I but seeing that piece of paper with the folds and I was like "OH THAT'S HOW TO MAKE THE LEGS!"

All depends what you want to potentially do, if the roll is 1.5m wide 3-4 meters covers quite a lot of kinds projects.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 3 года назад
Sorry, I thought I had answered this, but I see now I haven't?! So I generally don't actually buy fabric unless I have a very specific plan in mind for it, and that makes it easier because knowing what I want to make with it make it much easier to know how much to buy! But also the other comment about 3-4 meters covering most garments (short of giant 19th century ensembles) is also true :-D
