Exactly! The first touch! The control and those faint moves that only the experienced football players could recognize. Some ignorant people would say the defenders were bad and so easy for Messi to dribble past because they don't know how Messi "cheated" on moves and led things to happen.

I still remember my amazement when seeing Messi in his first season with Barca, first season he was playing regularly, 2005/06... He was far from a complete attacker, goal and assist monster he became later on... But seeing him running at full speed with the ball staying so tight to him, glued to his feet, always able to change direction... I couldn't believe that was possible. I've never seen a player running with the ball the way he did, neither before or after that. Forget about the old free kick master, long pass master Messi... The young Messi, with that cartoonish acceleration, ball control, balance etc was a sight to watch. Breathtaking.
@javiersong

I can't agree with you more. He might have lacked some of the experience that he has now, but his speed and dribbling overpowered any other weakness. Watching Messi back then, I couldn't believe how different he was from any other player.

Football has seen many great young players. But what we were privileged to see was the career of a star who shone bright right from the start and kept going nonstop; without getting seriously injured, wasn't overtaken by unprecedented fame, didn't lose focus and rebel. He just kept going and going and even won the Worldcup at 35. That level of consistency is just as miraculous as his skill, if not more.

I still remember the first time in my life I have ever seen Messi playing. It was in a youth world cup under 19 or 20, in The Netherlands I believe Messi was 17 at the time. I have never seen him before, I have never heard about him before. It was a game between USA vs Argentina and Messi only started playing in the 2nd half. Even within the first 2 minutes he already made a crazy impression to me. And to be honest, even after all these years, I can't name any football player in the world who stunned me as much as he did. In that match, Messi didn't score, didn't assist, didn't win, in fact he lost against the USA under 20 team, which was an absolutely nothing special team. But mate, this guy was crazy, he just walked through a whole bunch of opponents like it was a very normal thing to do and not just once, but like every couple of minutes. There was absolutely no doubt for me that this kid, and he really looked like a shy little unsure kid at the time, was by far the best player I have ever seen. I told my classmates about him on school, nah they said, Ronaldinho, he's the best! Have you seen Messi playing? No, but Ronaldinho is the best player in the world! Oke buddy. That tournament Messi received a reward for beïng the best player, the top scorer, and Argentina won the tournament, he became a youth world champion, soon after he became the olympic champion as well. I remember "Piet de Visser" telling Maradona to call Messi, which Maradona really did, and you really saw little kid Messi beïng amazed and shocked and happy at the same time. I think Messi doesn't even know that it was Piet de Visser who initiated this. Either way, even by looking at this vid back, you see all the things all over again, the way he passed these players isn't normal, the reaction speed he got in the most crazy situations is stunning. This kid is special, he is by far the best player ever in my opinion.

its as pep once said: young messi had no reverse gear, because all he thought about was to move towards goal ( ofc the team was first, but you get what i mean). and there is that famous clip of pep in the dressing room of man city giving half time "analysis" ( well he only screams, because they got hammered by barca i think) and saying something along the lines that messi is an animal and a killer at the same time, he smells the goals. i think he was just that good that he could add something to his footballing repertoire that very few people can our could: the asset of going for a goal. and i dont mean score a goal because we play football, but score a goal just because you can. exploring this thought further i feel that this is were greatness stems from. assets that no one else can have, because they dont have the skills.

19 year old Messi was like Maradona on steroids. The thing was. Messi never really got better than this, just more efficient. These runs were unbelievable.

At dribbling yes, his dribbling peak was 19-23 but he got much better in all other realms, especially shooting, passing and free kicks

Messi been Messi since he first touched a ball. He just dominated the soccer world by 19. Truly one of the greats, if not the greatest. God bless the game

Amazing player. Even when he can't reach the ball, his instinct is to score. The "hand of god" goal at 1m.42s. says that beautifully. Memories of the great Maradona R.I.P.

I was a big fan of Maradona and was understandably depressed after his retirement..but along came Messi and football was joyful again... he's the most complete footballer ever... playmaker, finisher... even great in defence...Leo is unsurpassable

Nice video. For me, Messi is the best player of the millienum. But Ronaldinho was the most fun player to watch of the millennium. Whether the ball was on the ground or in the air. He performed magic movements of the ball.

Agree with you! I have seen a lot of your comments on footballing clips and HH videos, you’re definitely one of the biggest footballing expert and fan I have seen on the net. Where do you rate Messi now in your all time list? As he cemented yourself as the second best player of all time behind Pele? Do you rate him higher than Maradona? Wish you well, cheers from Switzerland my friend

@@baptistelleshi1090 Thanks for the compliments mate. Regarding Messi. He's in my T4 plsyers I've ever seen. ( Pelé, Cruyff, Maradona, making up the four football horsemen of the apocalypse ). I don't believe any of the four are " necessarily " better than the other's. As they've all got their strong traits in different area's, they're more stronger than the others. Here's a link to my channel 👉 www.youtube.com/@johnpacino007 You can view some of my comps on the great players of the game.

Soz for the late reply. Only just saw your comments & thanks for the nice compliments. As for Messi. I regard him Pelé - Maradona, as the 3 greatest to do it. I have no personal preference who's the best out of them, as a solid case can be made for anyone of them to be held as the greatest. All 3 have their diehard fans who claim *_goatmanship_* 🐐for their personal favorite. They're all World Cup champions. The biggest prize in football.
