Today, the legacy of the Pony Express lives on. First of all, while I visited the Pony Express Museum in St. Joe’s, there are actually lots of museums and historical sites you can visit along where the trail used to be. That’s also where you find much of the approximately 250 known examples of Pony Express mail that still exist today. There’s even still original segments of the actual trail that have been preserved. So check ‘em out and stuff.
The Pony Express was the first fast mail line across the North American continent. Though it was short-lived, it was extremely influential. Ever since it ended, it has been romanticized as a big part of American culture, and again a big reason why is Buffalo Bill Cody. The Pony Express has been featured in many movies and TV shows, and if you ask most Americans today about it, they know all about its legendary status.
The Pony Express symbolizes the ideals that many appreciate when they think about the “Wild West” or American culture in general: freedom, innovation, individualism, grit and determination. Above all, embracing adventure.

There are so many overlooked and undertaught stories about the Wild West. I recently heard about two remarkable ladies who became Deputy Marshals in Oklahoma, S.M. Burche and Mamie Fossett. The press at the time thought they were nearly insane for doing it, as Oklahoma at the time was considered the most violent, criminally infested territory of the United States.

Great video! I find it unbelievable that the Pony Express went bankrupt so quickly. Obviously the Transcontinental Telegraph played a pivotal role in changing communication methods and delivery, but considering the massive success and scope of the Pony Express, it just surprises me that such a successful service could be rendered obsolete within only a few days.

I think it just is further proof that often government needs to step in for major infrastructure projects since they would take so freaking long to become profitable. Thanks for the kind words. Always glad to see you in the comments.
@Ugly_German_Truths
@Ugly_German_Truths 2 года назад
They needed insane amounts of "hardware" (that is soft, well groomed horsesm station buildings with crew and the means to feed the horses necessary for the quick changes even though the other horses could feed on any grassland nearby... ) so their up front costs for the "Service" were absurdly high for the time, when even a 4 horse stage coach travelling hundreds of miles would only switch 2, maybe 3 times and simply take the time the horses could make for the legs between. The system itself worked. both with horses in greek and roman imperial post services, and with foot messengers in the Andes where the runners would hand over the "mail" and not continue on with a new ride. But you need deep pockets to make it work and for a private company that means lots of customers willing to pay a bit extra for quick service. Again something similar happened later with dedicated mail pilots and simply putting Mail on line flights as extra cargo. The slightly faster service with special planes and pilots was too expensive to justify especially once the freight capacity for really popular routes got higher and thus a few bags of mail and packages did not really need a whole plane to deliver. The mail fliers were relegated to remote locations like the Australian outback or Alaska where you'd not find so many "line flights".

As someone from St. Joe, It's great to see you making a video over its historical highlight. I recently did quite a bit of research into the Pony Express and there are a few tidbits that I wanted to add for the curious: The Pony Express actually debated between having its headquarters located in a few other places including Atchinson, KS- only about 15 or so minutes from St. Joseph (Which would avoid having to cross the Missouri River). St. Joe was chosen particularly because it was the Largest City in Western Missouri (Kansas City was still a relatively small town) and the company was given discounts on transportation costs over the at-the-time proposed railroad to Denver from St. Joseph. (The rail was never built due to the civil war and Kansas City exploding in population) There is actually a bit of controversy over who the first rider is. The museum's best guess from the evidence is Johnny Fry, however, there was some testimony of a few other people from locals at the time in later interviews. I had read an archive of the earliest remaining local newspaper covering the first ride- The April 7th, 1860 edition of the St. Joseph Weekly West- which described a "Mr. Richardson" as the actual first rider. One of the major contributing factors to the Pony Express's failure was in fact the Paiute War. It's believed that the war entirely disrupted much of their business and put the company into $70000 in debt and many stations in the area that had been left in disrepair. Finally, when the Pony Express went bankrupt it was bought by the man from whom they had originally bought the stable in St. Joseph from: Ben Holladay. Ben Holladay would continue overland transportation over much of the same routes (although from what I understand never the full route and never at the speed of the Pony Express) using many of the same stations for many years until it became a founding component of Wells Fargo's operations.

They were developing their own museum and McCullough wanted them to rip off ideas for their museum. (I attended McCullough lecture and he autographed 2 of my books, Truman and 1776.)

It always seemed strange to me how much outside the US (where I am) the Pony Express is remembered, given how short a time it ran for etc. It's like (and this is the first example I could think of, I'm tired) if those services where you sent a text message with a question and got a response soon after - which I remember being a thing in the early 2000s - was memorialised as some big player in pre-Internet (or pre-smartphone) information.

1900 Miles in 10 Days, huh? 190 miles a day. I bought a video camera a few weeks ago. FedEx delivered it from California, in a mere 14 days. 2,430 miles in 14 days is 173 miles a day. The Pony Express was faster.

My family lore says that Alexander Majors was related to me and that it is possible that my great grandfather, Robert R. Majors (whom I am named after) was the brother of Alexander Majors. I have been to the Alexander Majors house in Kansas City which is now a museum. I have not been able to confirm that we are related. Bummer

I think snoop dogg actually mentions the pony espress “See it's a West Coast thing, where I'm from And if you want some, get some, bad enough, take some But watch the gun by my side Because it represents me and the motherfuckin' East Side” just my interpretation
