Micheal Smitty, the new owner of the Madison Dry Goods, has plans of carrying on the stores History and Legacy. The building has been a Hardware Store, Motel and also a Funeral Home. The Store was restored back to its 1900’s look by the Miller’s almost 30 year ago and has been in operation ever since. The Miller’s decided to retire, but turned down offers because developers wanted to turn the building into apartments. When they met Smitty, they knew history would be carried on and the sale was made. Come along with me as Smitty takes us on a tour.

Because of my age, I was fortunate to experience many of the old stores before they disappeared. Each had their own distinct aroma depending on the type of store.

This video warmed my heart. I truly wish I could experience a visit here. Absolutely fascinating. Handwritten receipts, historical pieces, local produce...and a feeling of normality, no rushed transactions, intelligent conversations🤗 oh how I wish the world was as gentle as this wonderful place. Thank you from England.

It's always a pleasure to watch John's videos. The open back door to see our history. I wish I could get back thru time and stay back then when a dollar was silver and a Ford or Chevrolet would last 10 years or more like they should....everything was different back then because people made things in a diffetent way...."the American way"...A nation full of hard working people that gave it all not only for the well-being of their loved ones but also for the greatness of this country. The kind of people that never gave up hopes...the kind of people that have never surrendered their freedom. America, the land touched by the hand of God in many ways for sure.. Thanks again, John. God bless.

This is less than 30 minutes from me over in Rockingham County. Madison is a great town and once had it's own tobacco market with several warehouses. Both Daddy and I sold tobacco in Madison. Mama was born and raised just east of Madison. Thanks to all those who keep these kind of places going.

Such a great store! Might I suggest an area for sewing/quilting notions and fabric? It’s hard for a lot of ladies to find things they need now. A display of singer sewing machines and quilts would lend itself to the atmosphere but period fabrics and notions would probably sell. Also, some are adding seed libraries to their book libraries also. Not sure if seeds are carried in the store. I’d love to take a weekend trip to see the store. May wait til the vendors are open upstairs also. Best wishes for a successful future. Enjoying the field trips to these towns and businesses.

I live in Northeastern Connecticut, and in the Town of Putnam, they did just that! In the Downtown area, which is now an Antique Store area, a Sewing/Yarn/Material Shop recently opened...They have Antique and new Sewing Machines, and the local women sit around and Sew, Crochet, and Knit all day, they even have Looms to hand make Rugs and things. It's a very busy and popular place now, they also sell everything you need, from Material, to Thread, Needles, etc.

One thing that would really bring the authentic feel to your store would be the lost art of counting the customers change back to them. The total is $15.65, a dime makes $15.75, a quarter makes $16, 4 singles makes your $20. Have a nice day!

That ironing board in the kitchen would originally have several layers of newspaper tacked onto it. Then you would put some cotton cloth over the top of it to make it padded. If you take a look you should see the tack holes still on it

It's reassuring to see that there some of the younger folk today interested and wanting to preserve things of days gone by for a lot of us older folk and the younger folk as well. I've seen so many places in my neck of the woods be demolished for the sake of modernism. Those places are now gone forever. The days of walking down to Browns old country store and getting a RC cola and a moon pie are long gone. A Dollar General now stands in it's place. I'll definitely make this a road trip. Can't wait to see the museum upstairs and I know I'll find something to purchase and bring back home. God bless you for holding out till y'all found a fine young man to carry on the business and add to the history of this living piece of history. Best of luck to you Smitty. We'll be seeing you soon! And Thank You to The Appalachian Channel for another jewel of a video!

Nice!!! I reside in upstate NY, Canadian border, and I know in Constable NY there was a country store that was ran up to 10 yrs ago. The man who owned it lived and worked there to the day he died at well over 90 years old. Mr. Talon was an amazing man, ALWAYS without fail a truly kind person. The store was like walking back in time, he wrote everything down in a ledger and the pricing was SO SO VERY low. I think he did it because he loved what he did and not for the money because let's face it he could have closed the doors many years and retired but he didn't. He was loved by many and missed dearly.
