Baker Electric Car Charger from 1908. The huge device consisting of a glass rectifier and transformer act as a power supply to charge the original Edison Batteries. Steve Normandin discovers how the charger worked and puts together the pieces while telling us how it worked. The glass bulb of the mercury arc rectifier glows pink, blue and white as the mercury vaporizes. and it converts AC power from the grid to DC power for the car batteries. The long chord is made with braded cloth, and plug with asbestos insulation. The Baker Electric Car was one of the earliest commercially sold electric cars. The charger and car DC motor was made by General Electric in Schenectady.

I want one next to my desk so when people ask me what is that, I can say that's my phone charger.

There are artisans that can still make them for you. The mercury is not cheap though. It wouldn’t be very small because you need high voltage to make these work. It would be the size of a car battery charger of today.

Modern solid-state electronics are great, since they're more efficient in both energy usage and space; But I'd love to still see Mercury Arc Rectifiers in use just because they look awesome. I'd love to see these old rectifiers on top of modern EV DC fast chargers.

They only produce half wave dc
@brys555
@brys555 Год назад
@@WELLINGTON20 No. They can be connected to make full wave rectification, but it's different circuit to today's most popular Graetz bridge.

Very interesting. Amazing technology that bridges the gap between the old and modern era.

The 1930's battery charger probably has a copper oxide rectifier .. the first selenium rectifier I remember seeing was in a 1940's receiver .

The wirewound resistor is ballast resistance for current limiting. Mercury vapor rectifiers have a negative voltage to current coefficient. Without the ballast, the current through the rectifier would increase exponentially, destroying the tube and probably the battery being charged.

Plug is asbestos lined. As well as the resistors and wiring.

Awesome piece of electrical history. I think Jay Leno has that same car in his collection. Later came the selenium rectifier, and the modern diode. Almost forgot the vacuum tube rectifiers...Great explanation. Thank You for posting this.

There were also smaller battery chargers in the teens and 20s that were smaller argon gas rectifiers.

I haven't seen many arc rectifiers with only two terminals but I suppose you don't need 'fancy' three-phase AC just to charge batteries.

If the electrical insulation is good why not use it? Modern electrical equipment simply doesn't have the same wow factor.

Those arms are the DC outputs..not the AC inputs !
@tihzho
@tihzho 5 лет назад
No those two arms are AC. The AC input is through a centre tapped transformer giving with each arm connected getting 1.2 wave AC. The DC output is the Hg cathode and the centre tap of the transformer.
