"Those magnificent men in their flying machines!"
@Holliethedog
@Holliethedog 11 лет назад
My grandfather flew on Bournemouth Beach in 1904 in his experimental monoplane.As well as him, he took a pig and a duck as passenger. He was able to complete figure of eight at a height of about 50 feet, but was unable to gain sufficient altitude to clear the cliffs and land in the Lower Gardens as intended. His exploits are chronicled in the S W Echo, with photos. His home-built engine was later used to power threshing machines at Kingston Lacy House, where he passed out his days.

@Holliethedog

@@stephencrowther524 My great grandfather I should have said. There is a plaque in KL House commemorating him. He used an air-cooled kerosene engine which developed 12 hp which allowed him to achieve flight without the weight and pulley system which the Wrights used but didn't allow him to gain altitude above 50 feet due to the livestock. He had to take the animals as his sponsors insisted the flights be commercial.

I can't imagine all the extra weight they somehow managed to get added onto it somehow helping it fly, it looks as if it were a bit lighter and more powerful it could have actually flown

⚠️ God has said in the Quran: 🔵 { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 ) 🔴 [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 ) 🔵 And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 ) 🔴 But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 ) 🔵 And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 ) ⚠️ Quran

There is anecdotal evidence that Richard Pearse, near Timaru, made a powered flight several months before the Wright brothers, but neither he nor his witnesses kept a record and Pearce was not interested in pressing his claim. It is certain, however, that Pearce made the first powered flight in the Southern Hemisphere, several years before Pither is said to have flown.

That looks like a whole lot more powerful engine than available (for the weight) back in 1910. The propeller on this replica also looks more modern and efficient than would have been hand carved back then. Unfortunately not having detailed engineering drawings available this is an academic exercise at best.

The wiki article seems to disagree that the aircraft performed beyond expectations... well, maybe if your expectation was it was going to kill you... and it didn't... then you would be damn pleased :-) "In 2003, the Croydon Aircraft Company at Mandeville, near Gore, produced a replica of Pither's Bleriot-style monoplane, which microlight veteran Jerry Chisum flew. He declared the design controllable-just." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Pither

First of all, that's really, really cool. But I'd like to know if he ever flew it more than a few feet from the ground. At the very low altitude he flew those few hundred feet, he was still under wing in ground effect. How does this plane perform at altitude?
@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 8 лет назад
+A5mod3us That is a valid criticism. I would add that the area of the stabilisers is completely inadequate. But we should remember, we are looking at this from 2016 (or close) and this is a reproduction of an aeroplane that's 105 years old. For us today, with our knowledge, to get this in the air is some achievement, but if Mr Pither really did have it flying in 1910, that is a very significant achievement.
