Jay, you outdid yourself with this one! That Stanley is a beautiful car! Just as the owner was showing off the dashboard, I was thinking 'well, at least nobody could steal that!'. A few seconds later, you said the same thing! Great minds and all that. I learned a lot! The only thing I knew about was Fred Marriott's 127mph record. One of your best episodes yet! WYR= I'm a glutton for punishment; I'd take the Stanley! Hey, at least here in Phoenix, the water would probably boil by itself! No flames shooting out at me!

Stanley Steamers have always had a place in my heart. Wonderful vehicles. Too bad they never got upgraded and continued onward.

Great video! I love Stanley's. They were made close to where I grew up and there were always a few in my town's Fourth of July parade in the 1960's. Thank you to Mr. Smith for explaining the operation and sharing his car. I'd choose the Stanley in both scenarios.

I wonder how many mechanics were qualified to work on repairing the Stanley Steamer. Interestingly, J.I. Case quit building steam engines in 1924.

Hi Jay! Thanks for showing the amazing Stanley Steamer! I am kind of surprised, that with the modern computer controlled EVERYTHING, that someone has not made a modern version of these. With the condenser tech that Doble used and a computer to take care of all the valves and startup procedures, these could possibly be viable! 20 minute startup, well you push your fancy remote and the thing starts up while you are getting ready to leave! Shutdown, same thing. Having alternative fuels would also be a plus. WYR #1 Stanley for sure. 2 Locomobile! Those were very well made cars!

WYR: both scenarios, the Stanley Steamer. It’s probably the most iconic of all the choices. A very interesting car, I’m glad the owner explained how it works. Still, it would take some time to get used to operating it. But too bad they stopped making them.

My man that steam car is so cool , i operated a few building boilers , easer than that car lol . Steam trains maybe easier to I’m not sure. But I have to admit I’m 62 years old. This is the first time I see an operated steam car thanks you made my day❤

WYR: All of them. If you can fix a steam locomotive, you can fix a Stanley Steamer or any other steam-powered car. The only major difference is the size of the parts.

I’m gonna have to go with the 1910 white, since the Stanley doesn’t have a condenser your constantly refilling with water whereas with the white you get more miles Per gallon of water.

WYR is tough! But the Pearson Cox is a phaeton so I gotta have it. And the Milbourne looks neat. But really the Stanley is in a class all it's own as the most recognized name in steam and they were top quality cars in design and build which put them there.

The Doble steam car model E and model F are the best steam cars ever made. They could go 1,500 miles on 24 gallons of water. They were much faster to get going as well, less than a minute from dead cold. Jay Leno owns a Model E Doble that was once owned by billionaire Howard Hughes. These cars were also fast, up to 75 mph in 10 seconds with a top speed of 120 MPH. Look them up!!

Watching this, now I know why steam went out, as it is too complicated for the average person.

I thought about building a steam engine and boiler that can be used in a vehicle. Using electric blowers , blowing through a carburetor basically making a blow torch to heat a stainless coil boiler. In cool or cold weather heat the fuel in the carburetor to 100°f to 150°f using blower speed to throttle steam production. Build a engine with 4"-4.5" bore, with 6"-8" stroke double acting two cylinder. And a larger engine with 4cyl, 6" bore and 8" stroke. Double acting. With the exhaust entering a steam jacket around the cylinder . Like a water jacket, used to keep the cylinders heated preventing steam condensing. Even 150 psi spread over 6" of piston is a lot of pressure. Then imagine a big bore version, with 8" bore, 8" stroke. Possibly as much as a 10" stroke. The HP may definitely not be impressive. However the TQ would possibly shame a diesel engine with adequate pressure. Use 800 psi safety valves with a steam stack like a freight truck for the exhaust maybe a high speed v4 engine. With a short stroke 3.875"-4" a 8" bore basically looking similar to a big block chevy, only having 4cyl, possibly 6 cylinders. Using the blower for starting fast , then go to a more traditional burner to maintain steam. With a high pressure pump pushing water into the boiler after going thru a pre-heater. To heat the water to 200°-215° minimum, water doesn't boil at 212°f under 400 psi. So pre heat to just under boiling temperature at injection pressure. In the right vehicle near 200 mph should be possible. 😳 use a 2.5" steam supply the boiler is the HP limit.

Just thinking: a major the disadvantage of the steam engine was waiting for the boiler to heat up before being able to drive away. Today we have tankless water heaters that heat water instantly. What if they could do the same with a steam engine by heating only a heat exchanger with the water tank only being used as a reservoir?

I would like to know something about the Pearson-Cox.

That's one complicated operating system. I would go with a horse for a couple more years.
