Jay takes us to steam school with his 1909 Stanley Steamer. See how a steam powered car with 700 lbs of torque can keep up with modern traffic and turn some heads in the process. Record date 2-12-2000.

It's a common misconception that steam automotives used to blow up. Steam engines and trains were almost Bulletproof and the same is true for cars. What became a problem was steam boilers in homes because they couldn't find a way to equalize the pressure. Until The Hartford insurance company invented what is called the Hartford Loop which is on every single steam boiler you will ever see

In a steam locomotive they can rarely have what's called a crown sheet failure, which can cause an explosion. An old stream tractor blew up in Iowa a few years ago from such a failure. At least a couple of people died. Also sometimes locomotives would blow up during collisions.

I spent 30+ years working for Burbank Public Works out on the streets. I saw Jay roll into town in so many different vehicles on his way to NBC studios, usually when we were cleaning the underpass by the studio, including the Stanleys. Rolling down Hollywood Way, chin sticking out of a huge cloud of steam with a big grin on his face. Got a close up of his roadster with the 6 speed prototype transmission and 50 studio crew members with drool on their chins when we were working on the NBC lot one morning. He's a cool dude.

Fun fact. Stanley Steam cars were built in Tarrytown, NY, up the Hudson River from Manhattan. The factory was sold to Louis Chevrolet in 1916 shortly before his company merged with GM in 1918. That plant built Chevrolets up until the mid 90’s. Sadly nothing remains of the old factory site.

I'm a 70 year old mexican man from Guadalajara, when I was very young, maybe 5 years old, steam locomotives were on they way out but since my dad as a railroad man we traveled a lot on those wonderful Pullman cars, I have a fading memory about the time when I was 4 or five years old being at the station and walking by the engine which threw steam at different places, then going into our bedroom and very, very gently the train would start rolling for the overnight trip to Mexico City, in the morning we would wake up and dress to go to the "dining car" to have breakfast while rolling into Mexico City, once off the train I remember seeing the locomotive at the end of the train again throwing steam around it. Soon after that the locomotives were diesels. I've read some history about mexican railroads and I belive those steam locomotives were Niagaras.

5 or 6 years ago an old buddy of mine came in where I was bartending and said I need to swing by his place and wouldn't say why or take No for an answer. I'm a big car nut and have been deeply involved in motorsports for over 40 years as has my buddy in different motorsports. Upon arriving, sitting in his shop was Leno's Steamer... Pretty Sweet machine and pretty cool Jay shipped it to my buddy for a little paint work.

I'm more of a fan of the Dobles Steam cars (and planes), but I love just the idea of zero gearing, massive torque cars. I still love the steam tractor description where it had enough power 'take the building down' - or if the boiler were to go critical, it would also take the building down. Curious how many people got the reference at 07:20 about 'going backwards' regarding hills. The gravity fed fuel system of the Model T prevented approaching severe inclines head-on. To climb a steep grade, you'd need to go ... backwards (at least until fuel pumps were invented / implemented).

In the mid. 70s I run a small auto parts and machine shop. Lovely middle aged couple came in, needed a part ...don't remember what, but it was for a steamer. Which was now sitting in the lot. Well the nearby warehouse had the part, our driver was there and picked it up. During the short wait, we went out to learn more about this auto yep phones ringing , let's look at ...wow, they had driven from New York, to Cincinnati and planned on going to California... well they got their part and a spare. Nowafter watching this , I wonder did they make it ? Thanks for sharing your knowledge ... I learned a bit.

The 1906 Stanley Steamer land speed record was finally broken in 2009! 127 mph in 1906 and 148 mph in 2009 so not hugely different. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspiration_(car)

Faster, easier, and more efficient, like any other technology, probably. I'm guessing that, like modern electrics, not that different from a modern car. Start it with a key, 15-30 seconds for steam pressure from dead cold, condensed steam, and computer control of everything from fuel pressure to blowdown descaling. Close to zero pollutants, about 30 MPG of gas and 500 miles per tank of water. Low maintenance, insanely complicated, and very torquey. I really wish there was a company that would use and develop steam power for cars today.
