6hp National hot bulb oil engine of 1912 vintage seen here running at the 2023 Grand Henham Steam Rally.
Made by the National Gas Engine Co. Ltd of Ashtone Under Lyne, Manchester.
The company was founded by Henry Bickerton in 1890 with the production of the gas engines. In 1932 the company name was changed too National Gas And Oil Engine Company.
In 1949 The Brush Group took part control of the company which continued until 1961 when they took over completely.
From then they traded as Mirrlees-National Ltd.
In 1977 they were taken over by the Hawker Siddley and became Mirrlees-Blackstone (Stockport) Ltd. In 1992 they were still trading under that name producing large diesel engines for ships, trains and powerstations.
Purchased by the present owner in 2011.
