Two of the most popular Opera singers at the Met of their day: Alma Gluck and Louise Homer made some wonderful popular records together. Here is a favorite they recorded in 1912 (this is the 1914 repressing).
Henry (dog) settled right in for this one and the cats were milling about too. I never know what they’re going to like!
I like the lyrics:
Oh! That We Two Were Maying
Oh! That we two were maying,
Down the stream of the soft spring breeze;
Like children with violets playing
In the shade of the whisp’ring trees.
Oh! That we two sat dreaming
On the sward of the sheep-trimm’d down,
Watching the white mist streaming
O’er river, and mead, and town .
Oh! That we two lay sleeping,
In our nest in the churchyard sod,
With our limbs at rest on the quiet earth’s breast,
And our souls at home with God.
Music by Ethelbert Nevin (1862-1901).
Text by Charles Kingsley (1819-1875).
Played on a 1914 Victrola IX with a fine Burmese Colour Needle (thorn).
