Nine years after one of the greatest earthquakes to hit a city, they built a city that looks far more advanced and glorious than their own.. then they tore it down. Makes sense... where did they find all those artisans? Why not rebuild the city of San Francisco itself, not an expo of "temporary" pieces of architectural majesty?

Exactly. Nothing about it makes sense like something from The Twilight Zone living in a world where the absurd is logical and the ones who are pointing this out are the crazy ones.

Look into this channel (Jon Levi). And be shock in what you find. History isn't what you've been told. Think about this. Observe all the buildings in photos from the mid/late 1800's. They range from castle like, roman-greco style, megaliths, intricate designs etc. Now ask yourself this. How did a horse/buggy people with very little if any tech/engineering/skill laborers build them ? They didn't, and you'll see how your post is part of what I'm implying.

you know all those buildings were built to be temporary right? it was meant to be torn down after like every other worlds fair. san francisco is a beautiful city with surprising historical preservation. if you’ve been, you would know the vast amount of well preserved beautifully painted victorian and edwardian homes, masonry beaux arts hotels, gold gilded city hall, opera houses, etc still there. they rebuilt the palace of fine arts because it wasn’t structurally sound, as all the materials to make it were meant to be temporary, like plaster, and wood and metal framing rather than masonry.

***** Don't you wish, Gabriella, that we could take a time machine to visit this so beautiful exhibition in San Francisco in 1915! You make a fine point about the city rebuilding in so short a time, after the huge earthquake of 1906. It is something I truly admire about the Seattle Center, that it has been preserved so far as I know, very much like it was when it opened in 1962. The real question is how could a bunch of miners and explorers build such a city from 1848 to 1878:) Also keep in mind that the gold dried up 8 years after it was found, so where did the funds came from after 1856? Also keep in mind that the "settlers" didn't start right away building churches and huge buildings. Some of the huge buildings including the two churches were build in about what...15 years?? I live in the Netherlands in the old city of Hoorn where there are lots of old buildings and churches and they took generations to build;) My two cents is that the Spanish were there long before they "discovered" gold;) This is just sooo obvious it's almost funny.

I think you do have a valid point. I visited the Liverpool Cathedral in Liverpool, UK a few years ago. I saw the construction photos. It took two hundred years to complete that single building (and it's magnificent). Either these temporary structures were made of burlap and plaster; or they were made of cut granite. Arguing about it will get us nowhere. I don't accept that these 200 buildings were made of brick or cut granite, either; because demolishing them in the late 1800s, in a single year, would be almost as great a feat as building them! However, I'm not going to waste my life thinking about it. I may as well waste my time trying to find out who constructed the actual Apollo 16 Capsule that "flew to the Lunar surface."

freddie mars The Arts Building arch and dome was torn down in the mid sixties and completely rebuilt. Many photos of the demolition can be found. Nobody said the 435´ tower was made of plaster! It is a steel structure covered with plaster decorations. Steel was used in skyscrapers since 1895. The Singer building built in 1908 was 612' tall, so technically no problem for 1915! Look for photos of the demolition of the buildings: the steel and thin covering is clearly visible!!! Why do you need to believe these constructions were already there, and no one noticed, right next to a large city?
@alaingadbois2276
@alaingadbois2276 2 года назад
freddie mars It is in the city, not on the fair ground. Look for San Francisco Civic Center history. In a second you will find a few good photos of its construction. Nothing special about it really. You understand people were able to build stone buildings in 1915, no? Note it is steel with stone facing, like many others of the time. San Fransco Chronicle: Jan 9, 1915:"Auditorium to open tonight" Jan 16, 1915:"New San Francisco Auditorium will be a 1915 monument." "Great structure will be permanent reminder of splendor of exposition." In a word, a permanent city building from the start. Have a nice day.

This was one of the last great expositions where architects and figurative sculptors worked together. Most of the buildings were temporary structures as were the sculptures. In essence the temporary buildings were like a movie set. Steel frame and panels of the buildings and sculptures made of a plaster gypsum and chopped hemp material, that was easier to work with called Staff or artificial travertine. Models of sculptures were pointed to monumental scale using a 3d pantograph which manually found hundreds to thousands of points that made the process much faster. Many of you are skeptical and it is no wonder because you were never taught or educated about these expositions or the American Renaissance. I have been researching this for over 50 years and if there is any blame or cover up it is from a greedy modernist art society. Remove great art so we can put our crap on the pedestal. The Expositions were taken out of the art history books, in order to promote modernism as the greatest thing in art. Add to that the insistence that drawing.painting and sculpting from the human form was dead,. The media and universities also fell for this bull shit and many still refuse to teach the traditional methods to draw, paint and sculpt and basically could not if they tried today. Architects also have no clue how to collaborate with sculptors and sculptors in general have no clue how to create monumental sculpture anymore.. What other occupation requires absolutely no education nor training? Would you hire an untrained architect, doctor, contractor , plumber or electrician? Do your research before you spout what little you know. Even the expositions in Paris were temporary. Walt Disney was inspired by the NY worlds Fair. And Disneyland was born. There was a grand pride in the nation after the Civil War and before the first world war. A country that isn't busy with endless war begins to create great things.

A theory of beauty, i think beauty is of utmost importance for the human psyche. It is very important for our well being and happiness to be surrouned by beautiful things. Humans are creatures who crave for beauty,. beauty in the food we eat in the form of taste, beauty in the sounds we hear in the form of music or the chants of the birds, beauty in the form of nice aromas or the beauty of being touched by people we love. We are sexually attracted to beauty. I think being surrouned by uglyness in all of it's forms, be it ugly architecture, ugly smells, ugly noise, is detrimental for our psychological health. Modern architects shuld be more mindful of this and should really take into account beauty when designing buildings or urban spaces. The effects of beauty or lack thereof on our human psyche may be more profound than we think of, it may even affect social cohesion, safety, our desire to take care of the place we live, how connected we feel to the community, etc.
