In this emotionally devastating scene from the war film 1917, directed by Sam Mendes, Lance Corporal Schofield (played by George MacKay, known for his role in Captain Fantastic) finds himself at the side of his dying friend and fellow soldier, Blake (portrayed by Dean-Charles Chapman, recognizable from his role in Game of Thrones). As Blake's life slowly slips away, he makes his final pleas to Schofield, urging him to continue their mission and deliver the crucial message that could save countless lives. In a heartbreaking moment, Blake asks Schofield to reassure him that he knows the way forward, seeking comfort in his final moments.

George MacKay's character, Schofield, with tears in his eyes and a heavy heart, describes the path he will take to complete their mission, providing solace to his dying comrade. As Schofield's words paint a picture of the journey ahead, Dean-Charles Chapman's character, Blake, finds peace in knowing that their mission will continue, even as he takes his last breaths. This powerful scene showcases the incredible emotional range of both George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, as they portray the unbreakable bond between soldiers and the sacrifices they make in the face of war. 1917, featuring these talented actors, will be available for streaming on Netflix starting June 1, 2024, allowing viewers to witness this moving testament to the human spirit and the enduring power of friendship.

What’s the 1917 movie about?
On April 6, 1917, the Germans pretended to abandon their trenches, but in reality, they wanted to surprise the British by waiting for them on the Hindenburg Line. The British are completely oblivious to this, except for General Erinmore (Colin Firth from The King’s Speech and Mamma Mia!). He wants to warn Colonel McKenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange). The offensive must not be launched, or 1,600 men will die. The two soldiers Will Schofield (George MacKay from Captain Fantastic) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman from Game of Thrones) are appointed to go and deliver the news. Their journey was not a pleasant one, as they had to cross a no-man's land full of corpses and rats. On the way, Blake is mortally wounded by a German pilot. Schofield had to continue his mission and go to Ecoust to warn the Devon Division. He was escorted by Captain Smith (Mark Strong) but had to finish his journey alone. Passing through the bombs, he alerts McKenzie before it is too late. The Colonel recalls his troops. In the infirmary, Schofield finds Joseph Blake (Richard Madden) to inform him of the death of his brother.

@@youtubeisfullofnerds5767 Shock is the state of insufficient blood flow to the tissues of the body as a result of problems with the circulatory system. Initial symptoms of shock may include weakness, fast heart rate, fast breathing, sweating, anxiety, and increased thirst. This may be followed by confusion, unconsciousness, or cardiac arrest, as complications worsen. TL;DR yes, it's called shock.

Imma add a little science to provide a clearer picture on physiology of the amazing human body. The body has many system and particularly to the blood system, it is a enclosed system with valves facing downward to prevent potential flush back. It is a safety mechanism to ensure blood traveling in one direction. When a foreign body disrupts the closed system, the pressure in the system would be greater than the pressure that exist outside of the body. One way view this is, imagine you have a tire that has a hole. The air escapes when you attempt to put more air into the tyre as the system is no longer enclosed and the pressure of the system is no equal to the environmental pressure. Therefore, the level of oxygen acquired from the lungs is insufficient to oxygenate the brain at its normal capacity. Furthermore, the person experiencing low level of oxygen, the pituitary gland would provide signals delivered via blood to the adrenal gland and ask it to secrete noradrenaline. It is ultimately futile and the brain is starved of oxygen, whilst the person has lots of noradrenaline in their system, everything they feel may be a numbing sensation. The body tries everything in its arsenal to ensure survival. With the level of blood loss and reduction of red blood cells (oxygen carrying cells), the body throws the entire kitchen sink. It tries to release noradrenaline via pituitary gland through the blood stream, the body sends signal to the spleen to produce more red blood cells to replace the lost cells, the remaining red blood cell (platelets), rushes to the wound site and attempts to clog the wound site. Just want to point out, this version has been simplify greatly. But boy do I love science/physiology of the human body. Actually hated it when I started learning it. It was one of my weakest areas. Now I miss it!

I like how the director made Blake the protagonist, and then killed him mid-way through the film only for Schofield to take over. We expected him to survive _because_ he was the protagonist, which is why this hits harder as it illustrates the fragility of their lives in the moment. It’s just fantastic cinematography and a great way to hit the viewers in their feels…
@westminsterabbey.6916
@westminsterabbey.6916 2 года назад
It was an absolute genius move. For the first quarter of the film Blake is portrayed as the driving force of the mission, he’s the one with the personal connection to the end goal, he’s the one called upon by name to do it, he knows the way there, he’s the one who shows no hesitation, cinematically, he’s _visually framed_ as the main character. As an audience, we’ve been trained to recognise all these as indicators for the lead character and it lulls us into that familiar assumption. Scho is the one who suffers a potentially fatal injury twenty minutes in and is seemingly marked for death early on, he’s the one being dragged into the situation by Blake, he very nearly dies in the bunker and is saved by Blake, further cementing the latter as the lead hero, he’s addressed secondarily by the officers assigning them the mission, and is often in the back of the shot. Again, plenty of recognisable signs there. And yet, watching it again, I noticed that Scho shows a lot of signs of being a quiet survivor from word go. Of the two of them he’s always the one questioning the situation and their approach to it. He’s more experienced, he has more respect for the danger they’re facing, he’s less emotionally compromised than Blake, and comes to his rescue multiple times, stopping him from getting carried away, breaking up the fight he almost gets himself into at the start, insisting he himself goes first over the top, he even has food stashed in anticipation of lean rations. Perhaps most tragically he tries to argue they should put the German out of his misery but is swayed by Blake’s insistence that he go get him some water. Where Blake is driven by his heart, Scho thinks ahead more, has more situational awareness. Yes he’s following Blake into this, but he’s quietly training him to be more aware of his surroundings as he does. Equally, Scho would have even got as far as he did if it wasn’t for Blake. They make a perfect duo, both pushing and pulling each other forwards in the journey, their characters complimenting each other in an amazing dynamic. Both are equal in their immense bravery and courage, and after he loses Blake, Scho does take on more of his friend’s emotional drive. Scho is forced to carry on alone but Blake’s spirit is very much with him. This twist is one of my favourites in all of cinema, and it does come seemingly out of nowhere and packs an incredible punch, but I would argue that it’s set up very subtly before anything even happens. Quite possibly my favourite visual message in the entire film is in the opening shot of them both sleeping. Blake enters the frame first, Scho second. It’s Blake who’s name we learn first, and he literally pulls Scho into it, already setting up what we think is going to be the dynamic. Yet looking again, Scho is upright and fully in the foreground, filling most of the frame, his face clear to see, Blake is flat on the ground behind him with his face covered, reminiscent of the dead. Though Blake appears first, it’s Scho who we _see_ first. He’s already, literally, framed as the main character before anything even starts. And when you get the to final shot and realise this whole thing was bookended by these two mirroring shots of Scho leaning against a tree with his eyes closed….it all falls into place. This started out as a paragraph and ended up as a novel haha! I just can’t help it, I watched it again last night and it’s impossible not to wax lyrical about it for days afterwards. This film is a masterpiece of visual, verbal and emotional storytelling.

@westminsterabbey.6916
@westminsterabbey.6916 2 года назад
@@aishwaryac8720 I will add that their dynamic is more subtle and complex than I made it sound in my first description though. As I watched it last time I saw how the balance shifted between the two from minute to minute, Blake taking the lead as the initiator, then Scho stepping into the foreground and deciding their next move or approach. They share the lead with amazing harmony for those first 50 minutes, each bringing their own input and working fluidly together. Although all those signs of Blake being the “main” one are there underneath it all, our boys are set up as a team from the start, and that team dynamic settles in, and we settle into it, as we watch how well they work together. By the time they reach the farmhouse we’ve grown attached to the idea of this team making it through together, because they need each other to move forward. And that’s why Blake’s brutally sudden death is such a kick in the gut. That’s why we feel as though we’ve been left cold and alone with Scho as the ambient music, that’s been running quietly beneath the scene for the last ten minutes, goes silent when Blake stops breathing. As a side note, I love that the scenery literally starts crashing down around them at the very moment Blake starts to show signs of confusion from blood loss. It’s the first real sign that he’s leaving Scho on his own, and Scho’s world as he’s known it for too short a time begins to disintegrate in the flames brought by the German who took his friend and sole support from him. God damn I could write a novel about this film….

He literally died for being a good person with a kind heart. And that’s the terrible metaphor of a war. It’s unsual, creative and heartbreaking to portrait this topic in war movies; so no matter what, to me 1917 deserved the Oscar as the best movie of the year.

“I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother And I fell by his side, and that’s how we died, Clinging like kids to each other. And I lay in the mud, and the guts and the blood And I wept as his body grew colder And I called for my mother, yet she never came Though it wasn’t my fault, and I wasn’t to blame. The day not half over, and ten thousand slain. And now there’s nobody remembers our names… And that’s how it is for a soldier.”

Imo what made this scene better was after this. Barely a moment passes and another group of allies pops up. They're all talking amongst themselves like everything is normal, because to them, it is. Further cements how easy and quick major events can pass. You even wonder if the other group would have been able to help Blake. But does it matter now? The event is long gone. And life will not wait. Schofield has to try his best to carry on.

If this was any other movie out today, Blake would've proceeded to survive for hours while bleeding, found some improbable way to fix the wound as if it's some minor inconvenience and then would carry on with Schofield and laugh it off as if nothing had happened. That isn't what happens when you're stabbed in the gut. What we see here in this film is what happens: You die, very fast.
