These are incredible recordings from the 20s I know they had condenser microphones in the twenties - and I think these must be utilised here. Just listen to the half closed high hat!
The Dusenberg's got a full tank and there's 8 quarts of gin hiding out in the rumble seat! Sylvester and Chauncey said to roll on by after the Dartmouth game!
Been listening to the California Ramblers Phil Napoleon and Bix, Venuti and Lang, 7 Hot Airmen and All the great jazz bands of the '20 & '30's.for over 50 years . Lost count of how many 78's I have! Next acquisition will be a 1930-32 Packard roadster to take out for an occasional spin !
It is lovely to hear them played on original machines. It is just that, especially with electrical recordings the phonographs don`t extend down at all to the lower frequencies. And, of course, you have to think about record wear. Thorn needles, I believe, were the answer, making a sweet, smooth sound. Not being negative - but I just love hearing what the early recording machines were capable of. Having said all that, some acoustic machines have an amazing sound quality - I freely admit!
