Lekkere swing, goede zang! Uiteraard alles in een stijl lang, lang geleden. Precies het charmante eraan.

Show Boat opened on December 27, 1927. I suspect this was the first recording of this song (probably recorded before opening night).

Calvin and Grace Coolidge reportedly attended the Broadway opening incognito. Mr. Coolidge even smiled. The presidential couple went disguised as two mild mannered NewEnglanders, two out of towners in the Big Apple.

Does anyone know who wrote this arrangement? And does anyone know if the score and parts for this arrangement are still extant?

Probably Shilkret himself, if not someone in house at Victor, since Shilkret was their top studio bandleaders.

Lyrics: Oh, listen, sister. I love my mister man. And I can’t tell you why. There ain’t no reason why I should love dat man. It must be somethin’ dat the angels done planned. The chimney’s smokin’. The roof is leakin’ in. But he don’t seem to care. He can be happy with just a sip of gin. I even loves him when his kisses got gin. Fish got to swim and birds got to fly I got to love one man till I die Can’t help lovin’ dat man of mine Tell me he’s lazy, tell me he’s slow Tell me I’m crazy, maybe I know Can’t help lovin’ dat man of mine When he goes away, dat’s a rainy day And when he comes back that day is fine, the sun will shine He can come home as late as can be Home widout him, ain’t no home to me Can’t help lovin’ dat man of mine

It's funny how these days people are so quick to label things as gay or homosexual. Loving someone is not necessarily the same thing as being sexually attracted to him. That used to be easy to understand. But anyway, the singer on this record was probably chosen because he has a very nice voice. It probably never dawned on the executives of the record company that somebody would find something strange about it. Musically speaking, this song sounds very good sung by a male voice.

Having a man sing this? Pretty progressive for its day! 🤣

It can be applied to fathers?

Not at all. It was typical. The idea was to reserve any interpretation of the work which may otherwise be a result of attempting to modify the lyrics, and it didn't matter if it was sung by a male or female. To this day, I often am asked to record songs that were written for a female part, and folks serious about music simply want a good rendition. It has absolutely nothing to do with sexuality.
