Commercial fished in Hawaii where I'm born and raised for 40+ years. Off a remote area of the Big island where I live, the best ahi school I ever saw was like this, but 5 square miles of bait and gorilla ahi in the 200-300 lb size!!!! It was the biggest ahi school I've ever come across. The school had been working it's way down the coast of the island for about 3 weeks and it was off of such a remote area very few boats could get to it!!! It was a once in a lifetime thing to find that large of an area packed with bait and big ahi/yellowfin tuna! I fish on my custom built Force 30 fishing boat and typically go on 4-5 day and night long trips before I return back to my home port of Honokohau harbor in kona! I was fishing alone that trip as I often do, and I set my record for the amount of 100+ lb ahi I caught in one day all trolling! We had about 4-5 boats spread out in the school over 5 miles square! Plugged my boat which has a fish hold capacity of 6000 lbs. Went the 100 plus nm's back home through the night, and my friend I called on the radio and directed him out to the area said by the following morning they were all gone, as the huge biomass disappeared following the oceanic current that heads towards the south, where the next land mass is Christmas island then south Pacific, and Tahiti etc!!! We have some of the best big ahi fishing here, and usually it's all within 5 miles from shore usually much less, as the 100 and 1000 fathom ledge drop offs are so close to the island because of the huge volcanoe slopes going straight down near shore!!! The 100 fathom ledge in most places off the big island is literally within 100 yards from the lava coastline!!!! I know you guys get some great big ahi fishing in the gulf, and around all the oil rigs offshore!!!! Yeah, we call it "floating" when the ahi are up busting on the surface feeding!!!! Usually we fish at night "ika shibi" fishing, drifting on a parachute sea anchor, where we "palu" or chum all night with an underwater light and use rope handlines!! It's wild, when you get a whole school around your boat!!!! Glad you guys got to experience that!! BTW, in the 5 square mile school I talked about earlier there must have been over 10- 15+ whale sharks feeding on all the plankton, spread out throughout the massive ahi school. There was so much small bait near the surface my furuno video sounder was dark red/brown from the surface down to 80 fathoms !!!!!! A once in a lifetime thing except when I used to fish around 200 nm's offshore around deep sea weather buoy's, but all the fish are around the weather buoy, within usually about 100 yards. You spend enough time at sea and you will see the most amazing things few people ever experience!!!! It's a rush fishing for the big ahi, and since the ancient Hawaiians fishing in canoes , the Hawaiian islands have been an incredible place where the ahi scolls migrate through every spring through summer to spawn here!! Aloha from beautiful Hawaii D.L.
