Another good day offshore fishing at Oregon Inlet. We were around a good bit of wahoos and although they were biting funny on the surface baits, the planer rod did some heavy lifting!
Regarding your cutoff, and this is coming from a former charter boat mate out of Hatteras & Oregon Inlet Fishing center, I would pull a dedicated wahoo spread of all wire or at least put wahoo cheaters in your mono or fluro stuff. It won't prevent you from getting sailfish bites and will prevent getting bitten off by wahoo. In Hatteras we pulled a lot more wire because there were a lot more wahoo down there, but I've caught sails, whites & blues on piano wire leaders. On planers I always fished wire, not just because of wahoo's teeth but also because the ballyhoo will swim better on wire when pulled deep. Rig it split-billed and then always "test" it before dropping into position. By test it I mean let it out a little ways where you can still see the bait, and while holding the leader in your hand hold the leader at a shallow angle and watch the bait for a few seconds, avoiding the prop-wash as best you can. Make sure the bait digs properly & swims upright. Using a wire leader will allow you to use a needle eye hook with an open gap as opposed to a tuna recurve hook. Using a needle eye hook and split bill rigging the bait will cause it to swim better behind a planer which is more important on deep baits. Tuna recurve hooks cause the bait to wobble slightly which is fine on surface baits but not so much on deep baits. Last thing I'll say is for wahoo fishing, I much prefer dark colors on planer baits over pink. I know this is a personal preference thing but having done both, I can tell you that without a doubt dark colors get more planer bites than pink. Black & purple is my favorite but black/blue and black/red work well too. You gotta remember what wahoo are feeding on. They eat a lot of small skipjack tuna, bullet tuna, frigate mackerel, etc. All of those are black blue and purple in coloration with silver bellies. A black/purple witch represents the back coloration and the natural color of a ballyhoo represents the belly. Good luck in the future. Maybe I'll see you out there, I keep my current boat in Manteo.
My buddies are always like "man did you see how hard that Salmon hit that bait"??? I just laugh and try to explain what our Wahoo bites look like, people can't fathom how violent it is until you see/hear it really can't stand the planers although they damn sure work. We use two downriggers in the Keys what boat is that??? Nice big cockpit as far as skipping them if they come in like that it's great but the one thing I strongly recommend is keeping them on the gaff and shoving their beak in the supper can't hurt a customer that way. It would drive me crazy not having my rods in a rocket launcher in the middle of the pit though
No clean and cook's huh everyone likes the fishing part but the ones who show how to clean them which u did in fast forward ( that doesn't count) and cook them up with those amazing recipes are the ones who are popular
I have many years experience in offshore fishing with planers but your wahoo video has stumped me...When the mate removes the planer and then clips the line back together,are you using special clips or special rod guides to allow winding the long leader on?
It's a bridle, so there are just loops on the mainline for the longline clips to attach to, which holds the planer in place. We remove the planer (and clips) to be able to reel the fish in instead of leadering for a long distance.
Throw a wet towel over their head as soon as he's in the floor calm them down vs a bat that can damage your cockpit floor even better once gafft streight to the fish box . Wahoo really like a ballyhoo on a black and blue feathers made by zooker run it on the flatline short in the white water .
Dude going through the wedding was "epic" hahaha! Good stuff and nice observation on the wire surface baits vs. the fluro planer bait. What size fluro are you using on the planer bait?
That wedding was something else but I didn't have a choice if I wanted to use the good cleaning station! They were further along in the ceremony on our way back so we went around them then. 130# fluoro
@@nolanminor6761 does it have a tower on it? Looking ones up for sale that’s not what I pictured the boat looking like lol. Seems like a a sweet boat to fish off though. Pretty wide and stable
