1930 Vintage - Jack Payne and his BBC Dance Orchestra 

My grandmother had stacks of old 78 records many of which were of Jack Payne and the BBC dance orchestra. I used to go up into her loft where there was an old wind up gramophone with a horn. I spent hours playing her records.

one of my all time favourites..jack payne..in the days when I collected 78 I had some lovely stuff of this fantastic dance band..it was a time I would of loved two been in the days of the dance bands ..19 30's

It's really good that you can play these records and put them on RU-vid. These recordings have a history from a different era, while they used different recording equipment. Yes these recordings are well recorded and you can really hear the words of the songs. (GREAT JOB).

Yes, it's a favourite of mine too, right from that lovely introduction. I think this is one of Val's best vocals too.

Jack's version of "Just Imagine" has long been a favorite. It's too bad that Val Rosing didn't record more with Payne; his vocals are wonderful. Very nice selection.

Glad you liked the selection. I tried to choose some representative recordings of Payne's output, which was considerable at the time.

This is wonderful. It's why my preference is for the sounds of the Thirties and Forties. But especially the Twenties! Oh, my!

Not to take away from these performances at all - but has anyone noticed how often Jack mis-sang a lyric? On "Five Barred Gate" he sings, "Love young dream's a nightmare." (It should be "love's young dream".) On "Bubbling Over With Love," "I've got someone I can rave about" becomes "wave about" - what the diner at Crewe did with the mouse in his stew! He blows another word in that chorus - "Why do I st-write song words", as if he wants to say "sing" but catches himself. Was it all "good try" over on your side - especially if you were the leader? If Jack had been recording in the US, he'd have been asked to stop singing. He didn't really have a voice, or a personality to make up for the lack of one, and over here, a band's appeal depended much more on its singers - especially as pop music became background noise to the depression.

The opening of With My Guitar sounds like Chaplin's theme to The Kid.

They did. They add a bit of period style to the video.

A great orchestra beautiful music , but he was a hard taskmaster once members of his orchestra walked out on him and opened with a new orchestra down the road called Pleasure Without Payne , he took out a court injunction against them and they returned to his band somewhat unhappy 1

I am reading Olyslager's `British Cars of the Early Thirties' and page 76 has a photo of Jack Payne with a 1934 Singer Airstream car, a not very attractive attempt at streamlining. Apparently, Jack bought 14 of them for members of his band, all in yellow.

does anybody knows the band members?
