1930s Thor Gun Drill [Restoration]

Hand Tool Rescue

The restoration of this 1930s pneumatic Thor gun-style drill made by the Independent Pneumatic Tool Co. was not supposed to happen.
When my basement flooded this tool was exposed to enough water to make it rust. Luckily, the tool is mostly aluminum, so not too many parts were affected.
I decided to use rust remover and sand-blasting to make sure all parts were de-rusted. I gave everything a decent polish, even the brass name plate. I am fairly sure the drill used grease instead of oil, but I decided that oil would be enough for the use it's going to get.
The drill runs very well now and makes noises like a jet-engine and R2-D2 had some fun. I chose to let you all hear the drill without any sound editing.
I'd like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video. The drill needed a good soak as I couldn't reach all the steel parts!
This seems close to the original patent: pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?PageNum=...

@namAehT

No way it's actually a solid piece. I give 10:1 odds that the fins are heat shrunk onto the shaft. If it's similar metals and done well, the joint basically vanishes to the eye. EDIT: Watched again. At 2:19 you can see a slight seam between the turbine and shaft.

Best video ever! A man working his tool with his hands and never says a word. Lots of cleaning and lube involved with twisting, turning, and pulling to get it off. I learned a lot. It's incredible how many different tools you used to manipulate your tool in just the first five minutes of this video. Like I said I learned a lot. Thank you. I love TOOLS!

Well, other than the facts that you didn’t lube properly, used the wrong blast media, didn’t polish properly, didn’t use proper PPE, didn’t protect the polished aluminum, and chose the wrong tools to sacrifice, it was an AWESOME rescue with an AWESOME result!! Great work! I was going to suggest after sandblasting, maybe you can switch the media out of the cabinet and use like a #10 glass bead media. That'll peen the metal, clean it up and bring back a shine; which would in turn negate using a die grinder with sanding and buffing discs. You can go straight to the buffing wheel.

I cannot believe that I haven't seen other restoration channels use that kind of paint remover. They all use the goop that you have to paint on with a brush and leave for a long time and smells terrible. I don't know if this stuff also smells, but it'd be well worth it for how easy it is to use and how fast it works.

Nice! I don't live far from where Thor made their products under Aurora Automatic Machine Company/Speedway/Thor. I regularly run across Thor products at auctions, etc. In fact, I'm certain I have a few massive sized drills in nice shape. Once I bought a box of Thor Wire Wrapping Tools from the early 60's, there were the tools and various parts for them in the box, they were all in like new/unused condition. I put one up on ebay just to see if there was any interest and a fella bought it. He used to use the tool in the 60's and had been looking for one for many years. He ended up buying the lot from me, didn't even try to talk me down from the price of the first one. When I see heavy Thor tools in nice condition, I buy them, so I'm certain there's 3-4 of them floating around the shed!

Well, I've rebuilt a lot of power tools and most of them I've messed with have grease. Usually some really thick paste that takes FOREVER to scrape out with a screwdriver. It's nice, though, because you don't have to worry about it leaking out, even if you crack the housing. Edit: I'm speaking specifically of my modern power tools. I bet it's cheaper to manufacture a part to hold grease than to hold oil, less concern for sealing it.

I was singing the Beatles song of that name when I saw it. Glad to see you gave an acknowledgement of a young viewer who is having some life challenges of her own, and I'm sure you put a smile on her face.

That's just wonderful. The intro, the sacrifices, the face! Whenever you love something, and you wonder how that something can keep upping the pace, and it does. You don't want it to stop. Please don't stop. By the way, that's a damn sexy tool!

Viewers with ear beats "BEWARE!" The last bit of the video gets very high pitch! It sounds like a dentist drill. Almost busted my ear drums.😵😬😖...good video tho😊

Have you ever thought of putting some lenolyum floor on the bench for easier clean up. Maybe try a flooring place and buy a big roll and replace the sheet on the bench as needed. 👍 or 👎 (edit: didn't consider the fact of paint stripper and other corrosive things.......shhhhhit)

This is a beauty. Someone loved it for most of its life before it came to you, it seems. Excellent choice to sand buff and polish the bare metal. Hope your basement stays dry.

Then they noticed how much more they could sell if everything broke after the year of guarantee... And they never looked back at the 'bad old days' when things lasted from father to son.

What a beautiful drill, it looks like quite a handful though. I agree that the polished metal is just right, I don't know why so many air tools have polished metal cases but it's a great look.
