1931 Duesenberg Model J Town Car. When Jay found the last original-owner, unrestored Duesenberg in the world languishing in a Manhattan parking garage, he knew he had to call in an expert. Thanks to Randy Ema, this Woods-bodied car owned by the Strauss family is finally back on the road.

Something nobody seems to have commented on is Jay's driving skill. If that's an original gearbox, I assume it did not have syncromesh and Jay did a pretty good job of shifting. You can even hear once in a while he'd push the gear and wait for it to mesh (grinding gears) till he got the speeds matched and got'er in. That is not an easy skill to master. He's not just a rich guy with cool cars, he's a true "car guy".

I truly enjoy Leno´s reviews of older cars instead of the new ones. There is a certain charm on watching all these beautiful things with mechanic works. I get kind of bored watching the modern computerized cars, but in these, it is wonderful to see for instance the valves going back and forth in older engines. Glad Leno loves these cars and has the hard cash to keep them top notch. Maybe he should open a museum and make a return on the investment...

Tell what you want about Jay, but this guy has passion. He's not a collector of shiny and pretty cars, he has enough passion and knowledge to acquire a 1920s car in very bad shape and restore it (even through Randy) to its past glory. He is like one of these people working in museums, doing this hard work of taking something old and making it presentable, while keeping it as close as possible as what it would have been like when it was made, matching materials and replacements to match the period and the car as much as possible. You can also tell he is not just collecting shiny toys, because he actually takes the cars on the road. He is also well helped by his team and friends, trusting them enough to literally put his life between their hands, which is why you'll often hear that the brakes have been improved.

For those who aren't familiar with Duesenbergs and other vintage automobile makes, a Duesenberg left the factory as a rolling chassis - they did not have bodies nor interiors. It was up to the owner to choose a coachbuilder to create the body and interior components and as a result every Duesenberg on earth is a unique, one-off creation. There is no such thing as a "stock" Duesenberg.
@outspokengenius
@outspokengenius 4 года назад
Well they are considered stock if not mechanically modified. The body maker walker was owned by duesenberg. The LeBaron dual cowl phaetons are all the same except for color. Also if you buy an original and rebody it with a modern body it is still considered 100% original because of the fact that they didn't come with bodies.

The first car I learned to drive at 13 on the farm was a 2-Ton 1932 flat bed truck. It had a little 4 banger engine that we started by pouring gas down the carb. The gears were super low so it could haul a big stack of hay around the farm. Great fun, memories.

I believe their is an estate down in Florida that was locked when the market crashed. The place is maintained, but has never been lived in again. They have taken picture of inside the build, and looks the same as the day they closed the doors. It isn't all dusty and stuff, the go through and clean the place once a year, and make repairs. The place is frozen in time. They have a garage with cars in it. Know one knows what the cars are, the have mechanics periodiclly go in. For the last forty years, the mechanics have been classic car guys. These classic car guys don't say what they work on, except the cars used by the servants.

I believe he speaks in relative terms. He owns a number of far more attractive Duesenbergs. In today's terms anyone would think this a stunning automobile. Even the engine is absolutely gorgeous.

To have a beautiful car like that restored in a year and a half is totally A miracle.

I nominate this car's hood ornament "most lethal-looking". Pedestrians beware!

Amazing what we had to do, oh my God, what was the final restoration bill, when many of the parts had to be custom made.

I grew up 20 mins from where the Duesenberg, Auburn, and Cord was designed and made. I've seen the prototypes, race cars, and rarest cars. Awesome cars, designs before their time. Love them

If someone ask me if I had a choice to become either Jay Leno of Hugh Hefner my choice would be Jay Leno. All those beautiful cars warms my heart and as Hef all those playboy bunnies would break my heart. Hats 🎩 off to you Jay for bringing these treasures back to life.

Duesenburg Model J. My most favorite automobile. Forget every other car in the world, nothing would be better than owning an SJ roadster, or a full Model J. One day I will build my very own car, based on the 1935 LaGrande Dual-Cowl Phaeton. I will build it from the ground up using every resource I have and I will love it like so. Nothing on Earth has ever graced the automotive world like the Duesenberg Model J.

I wish you the best of luck and i also hope you have a large wallet. Those scratch builds can land you in the high six figures or even the low seven figures

I completely disagree with Jay on this one. This car is a work of art. It is beautiful. My only disagreement regarding how it was restored is the external color. I happen to like black and for this one, with the interior I think I might have gone with a dark maroon. But then I don't like green for cars much anyways, personal preference. The restoration was exquisitely done. I am so glad Jay is rescuing such vehicles and having them restored and preserved for future generations to appreciate.

Fantastic show! It's so addictive. Amazing vechicles. But I love those original 50's, 60's, 70's big cruisers and muscle cars! All American classic machines. Ace! Kool jaleno. 😀😉

The 1929 Great Depression soon killed off almost all of the many "luxury" marques all over the world as even the rich folk now had to watch their wallets. And cars from the 1930 up to 1950 war era all became pretty drab and basic, as chrome was channelled off for wartime usage. The Golden Age of cars spanned the Roaring Twenties and it returned in the booming postwar Fifties.
@richardmichael5656
@richardmichael5656 5 лет назад
The 1930's cars weren't drab, some of the finest styles were from that era, of the art deco look, the Packard, the Cord and many other high end cars. The wealthy always could afford the luxury cars, and even more so now.

I dunno... The Straus family survived the loss of its head (the co-founder of Macy's department store) when Isidor and Ida Straus went down with the Titanic in 1912. If the family could survive that, I'm sure they didn't have to give up THAT much during the Great Depression. No, I agree with Jay. The car was stored because it was hopelessly used up and they didn't have people back then who could restore the car economically. Well, they really didn't restore it economically in the last 10 years! The Straus heir (Isidor's grandson?) kept it because he liked the style of the car, not that he ever expected to drive it again! Heh -- "only 7,000" miles on it.

The Duesenbergs weren't built till 1929. 1929-1937. So saying the cars of the 30's were all drab isn't true. The depression hit the luxury makers of the U.S. hard but didn't put them out of business and it sure didn't affect the rest of the world.

Please Jay, would you release a 90 minute story on the Model X from the barn/garage, I remember seeing it on TV in an hour long format and can't find it anywhere. If you could release the original story, or re-do it for a DVD or streaming release it would probably sell well :)
